Nah fairs fair. I never ever use homophobic slurs unless I am in an escalating war of words.

The whole racism and homophobic language or all of the word based punishments needs a quick review and known outlines ASAP. Whole MRP needs reviewing.

I’d do something along the lines of:

1) First instance 3 weeks. The club receive a course on mental health (this I’d imagine is mandatory anyway)

2) If a player from the same club has a second instance, the penalty is 5 weeks. Another community or course based education applied.

3) After that if a person from the club creates a 3rd incident. The player also receives 5 weeks, but the club is docked 4 premiership points.

Then just keep escalating from there and punishing the club.

No discounts. No extenuating circumstances.

Have known outcomes and educate. Hard to feel sorry for players when the known outcome is clear.

I mean most fair minded people would want to see Rankine play in the finals. He's an electric player.
He did the wrong thing, he was an idiot. I don't think Q from the Pies would be too affected. It warrants a suspension, but not the chance to stop playing in a GF. Not in my world anyway.
It's hard to even make a GF, as most on this site would know. What it's been 1 in 31 f'ing years. I reckon they should take account of the time of year, and ban him for three games. That gives him a chance to play in GF if they make it

Homophobic slurs doesn’t exist today.
It doesn’t fly at local level, nor should it professional. It’s not acceptable.

He deserves 5 weeks. You can say so many other things, and still be sledge or trying to get into your opponent’s head.

Players know exactly what’s going to happen if they use homophobic language to denigrate and insult someone on the field. If you don’t want to take a long holiday - don’t use it, don’t say it. It’s not difficult.

I mean you can argue whatever you want, but at the end of the day everyone knows using that word will get you a big suspension, whether you agree with it or not. If you know what the consequences of something are and you still do it then that's all on you.

Race, Sexuality and Family are pretty much the 3 no-goes when it comes to sledging from what I've gathered over my years in sports. You cross that line you wear the consequences. Yeah, it'd be cool to see Rankine play finals but that shouldn't move the goalposts. Gotta maintain integrity.
