Sure he kicked 71 goals, but only had 8 goal assists, wasn't great in the scoring chains and was a passenger for a lot of both finals because his play style isn't great when he isn't getting silver service i50s.

Richmonds best (ugh) was when they had 2 big forwards who either kicked goals or created for others. Hardwicks system requires forwards with some degree of flexibility.

But if GCS had a second decent KPF, then Kings goal return drops from 71 likely down into the 40s-50s as another KPF scores goals, but he lacks the skills to bump up the goal assists and score involvements which means when he has those games where the ball isn't hitting him lace out what else can he provide?

And I don't think King can evolve his game to be more involved, so unless Dimma has new and better plans in mind the risk if you back in King as your only KPF is what happened last night, because Long and Humphrey are too small and they had to roll Mac Andrew in there to solve the forward line issues at times in both finals (which bailed them out against Freo).
That's pretty interesting. Neale i note has the same number of score involvements with 40 fewer sites at goal.

I'm happy for it to be back so long as no Geelong players play in it
I'm really surprised people here aren't in favour of State of Origin. I for one would love to see it brought back. Even if it was state league rep - which has the longer history in our game. But prefer the true "origin" idea.

Also loved the indigenous all-stars concept.

It has to be done right though. Preseason is not the right time for it imo.

It should be mid-season, incorporating a 3-week break period for the AFL.

Cup holders to face challenger in main game. Other States to play each other for right to challenge the holder the following year.

And NO FREAKING ALLIES!!! That is not a State people.

The numbers just don't stack up if it's not the allies. Or you split Vic into metro country but then you have a tournament.

I'm for it. It would be a zero defence score fest

Seriously Qld v NSW will pack the Gabba with more interest than allies v whoever.

Allies is just not a thing. It's like a video game idea someone made up so that Victoria had someone to beat at a decent difficulty level.

Yeah, but then if you want teams that would be competitive it would be SA versus WA or similar. How would they go at the mcg?

Vic vs Allies still got 50k at Marvel in 2020

Does Swampy have a life outside of Footy Stats? Asking for a friend..

He/She doesn't h/t much. Must be a savant

He does cricket stats also,

does that count as a life outside of footy stats :p

One of the other interesting stats for King from this year - he had a total of just 183 disposals from his 25 games, and only reached double digit disposals on 6 times. He averaged 7.3 disposals per game, which is his lowest in from his last 4 seasons, with 10 games of 6 disposals or less

I remember the commentators discussing this a bit late in the season with how his impact is basically goals or nothing, as he's not really giving much out of his goal kicking and they wanted him to find a way of getting better involved in matches because there's times he doesn't touch the ball unless it's a shot on goal

Vict v SA or WA would definitely be competitive.

I actually think a NSW v Qld game would have the single biggest promotional effect for the game in those states than anything else.

I'll take a limited player that can kick 71 goals in a year any day
Ill take a forward who kicks 50 goals and helps the team more over the whole year.

If you look at goals, goal assists, score involvements and other key stats for a forward King overall is completely average.
In most of his games if he isn't kicking goals he is almost useless and sometimes a liability.

Yes he finished 2nd in the Coleman but i wouldn't have him in the top 10 forwards this year maybe not even top 20.

It's why King didn't get the AA Blazer - this is the stats for the 2 guys selected ahead of him (based on the idea that Jezza was a lock)

Jack Gunston, Hawthorn
20 matches this season, 62 goals, 32 behinds.
Averages 12.5 disposals, 64.0 per cent disposal efficiency, 5.1 marks, 2.0 inside 50s, 7.6 score involvements, 0.5 contested marks, 1.3 tackles and 0.9 goal assists.

Riley Thilthorpe, Adelaide Crows
23 matches this season, 55 goals, 29 behinds.
Averages 13.7 disposals, 67.1 per cent disposal efficiency, 5.7 marks, 2.1 inside 50s, 6.7 score involvements, 1.9 contested marks, 2.0 tackles and 0.9 goal assists.

Would be great to drop our parochial support and enjoy Footy as a sport and as a spectacle. Good to attract neutrals and outside interests (including sponsors) to the game.

To reduce injuries, increase the bench and interchange numbers and reduce game time (maybe)?

I think vic versus any state would be really uncompetitive but nsw vs qld might be worth a shot
Nah it would be competitive for sure.

The reason the rugby league State of Origin works is that it is kind of tribal and one state is more populous, more powerful, better resourced than the other.. There is history of unevenness there that generates tension. Qld had the smaller league. Players would have to go play for NSW clubs just like WA and SA players did in the VFL to earn their keep. And yet when you take to the field in State of Origin, it's even again, you represent your state, where you're from. It's 18 v 18. Don't underestimate a smaller state with a point to prove.

Overall I just think it's weird that we don't have a highest level representative competition.

The other thing I would do is make the main game always played on the challengers home ground. If Vic are the holders, they have to beat the challenger on the challengers home turf. This would mean the build up is bigger, the rivalry a bit more intense.

NSW v Qld (perhaps include ACT and NT players too) would be a cool aspect and generate a lot of interest in the non-AFL states.

Possible teams:

NSW/ACT

FB: Connor O'Sullivan, Dane Rampe, Harry Perryman
HB: Nick Blakey, Harry Himmelberg, Isaac Cumming
C: James Peatling, Jacob Hopper, Errol Gulden
HF: Charlie Spargo, Taylor Walker, Zac Williams
FF: Jeremy Finlayson, Todd Marshall, Isaac Heeney
R: Jarrod Witts, Tom Green, Matt Kennedy
IC: Callum Mills, Esava Ratugolea, Harry Cunningham, Sam Wicks

QLD/NT

FB: Aliir Aliir, Harris Andrews, Dayne Zorko
HB: Jack Bowes, Jack Payne, Kideaen Coleman
C: Jaspar Fletcher, Will Ashcroft, Bruce Reville
HF: Ben Long, Eric Hipwood, Ben Keays
FF: Alex Sexton, Mabior Chol, Charlie Cameron
R: Lachlan Keeffe, Zac Bailey, Levi Ashcroft
IC: Noah Cumberland, Shadeau Brain, Lachie Weller, Will Graham

Decent effort.

I'd set the Vic line to 8 goals based on that.

Yeah those nsw vs qld match ups would be pretty decent to watch. Vic would definitely put them away by quarter time though
