A second look at MSD fancy Marcus Herbert, this time playing more in his traditional rebounding half back role. Finding heaps of the footy as he always seems to, his attack and ability to disrupt in the air was impressive for a guy his size. Herbert is rumoured to be of interest to Richmond at pick 2, but if not there seems likely to be scooped up by one of a number of teams that have expressed interest.

Caleb May has emerged as a potential mid season draft option for clubs looking for a ruck. May is a big lad, standing 208cm with a powerful frame and long reach. His post tap work is still developing, but he competes super strongly in ruck contests, outreaches most opponents and has soft hands to drop the ball in the lap of his midfielders.

is a super sized tall forward at 203cm who draws the footy well and can out stretch most defenders. He's got a decent goal scoring record at SANFL level and is young and talented enough that AFL teams might back themselves to develop him into that hybrid ruck/forward that's so valuable in the modern game.

like traits clunking marks down the line all game and looked solid when moved forward in the last quarter, slotting a couple of goals.

The Blues used the MSD to elevate one of their VFL contingent onto their AFL list. Flynn Riley is a huge ruck with a powerful frame. He showed how dominant he can be with 40 hit outs in this game, as well as a solid follow up game at ground level and around the ground.

A look at new Hawks recruit Max Beattie who put his name in recruiters' minds immediately to start the season with a dominant five goal performance in round 1 of the SANFL. Beattie played high half forward and midfield, working extremely hard to make contests and find space, finding heaps of the footy and executing with class. Five goals from a guy who spends as much time outside forward 50 as Beattie does is a pretty special effort.

One for Eagles fans to check out with their new recruit Oliver Francou putting together a strong showing in his final game for North Adelaide. Francou has been super consistent this year in the SANFL, a hard working and tough tackling inside midfielder who's capable of finding plenty of the footy.

Walker's fourth VFL appearance for Carlton was a quieter affair. He started strongly with his typical power inside the contest and pace on the outside, impressive in traffic and again showing some variable delivery by foot. As the game progressed, he faded out of things and didn't touch the ball in the last quarter, spending a good amount of it on the bench.

Herbert was comfortably BOG for SA in their Champs warm up trial against NSW. While not having complete dominance in the hit out dual Herbert showed his strength and competitiveness to give his mids first use on a number of occasions, while following up strongly at ground level himself as he typically does. It was his contested marking around the ground that really stood out, using bodywork early to create an advantage on his opponent and clunking them with clean hands.

Tevita Rodan is a 2027 prospect tied to Port via father-son and Essendon via their NGA program. Rodan stepped up this weekend showing some of his significant talent, playing off half back, finding heaps of the footy and providing significant run and drive for the Cannons. While some elements of his game are still quite raw his movement is his real point of difference, light on his feet, able to sidestep tacklers and possessing a burst of speed. He executed a lovely step back balk in this game that you rarely see at this level.

2027 prospect Baxter Sruk is still rounding into form after a long injury layoff and isn't quite there yet as we could see in this game. His kicking was a little wayward and he was caught with the ball on a number of occasions, but in spite of that his incredible talent still shines through. He was involved in everything, attacking the contest with power, toughness and repeat efforts, and as is typical for Baxter he hit the scoreboard with a couple of nice finishes.

Darcy Szerszyn entered this season as a highly regarded and versatile defensive stopper but has missed the first half of the year through injury. He played his first game of the season on the weekend, and while he clearly has a lot of rust to knock off, he showed the athleticism, aerial impact and competitiveness that could see him push up into first round contention if he can get a solid run at it.

Harris was again effective in the second warm up game for SA although significantly less influential than in game 1. For most of the first half Harris’ opponent stuck to the goal square, seemingly a strategy to keep Harris out of the play and reduce his influence and marking dominance inside D50. In the second half Harris started to get more proactive, impacting aerially and disrupting NSW’s attacking forays. Harris will be one to keep an eye when the champs kick off in a couple of weeks, a strong carnival could see him push up inside the top 20.
