Watching the 3 Premierships... Cant help but think that Taylor in 09, and Hawkins in 11 have a real claim to feel slightly ripped off. Do we think the judges got it right on those 3 Norms? Personaly think Taylor was BOG as was Hawkins. Not for the fact they had it 35 times, more because when the big moments came, they stood up and won us the game.

Rooke in '09? Hawkins was very important in '11. But Jim played a great game. Thought Selwood was a chance in '11. He did come 2nd

I reckon Chapman in 2009 was probably the most clear-cut for me and ironically that was the one where a countback had to be done to pick an outright winner. I thought Bartel deserved it in 2011, but what if Hawkins had kicked that goal, instead of handing off to Johnson? Would there have been a major issue with Selwood or Ling winning it? Probably not. As for 2007, Johnson again was a fair enough choice, but Chapman, Scarlett and possibly even Bartel would have been ok with me as well.

Johnson's first quarter was huge in 2007. Wondering if after the toe poke, if Ablett ran to 45 and put it through, would he have a Norm Smith that day?

Wouldn't have mattered for Ablett - one concern that has been raised before with the Norm Smith is that it's voted on during the last qtr before the game has finished to make sure that post-game proceedings flow as smoothly as possible.
Chappy's name would have already been confirmed in 09 before the toe poke to Ablett and any potential goal he may have scored.

The biggest problem with the medal is that it is selected by members of the entertainment industry, which means that a last second incident could sway their decision - something that would be extremely unlikely if it was a genuine BOG award.

But... Craig is our Failsafe Device.

Bartel was very very quiet in 07. Along with Ablett. There would of been a good 10 players ahead of him.

I'd like to hear their names. I agree that he would have been a roughy, but if you just go by the numbers, 28 touches, two goals and five tackles looks like NS material to me. In a blowout like that though, unless someone gets 40 touches or kicks 8, it's going to be up in the air.

Really? If thats the case then I look like an idiot. Have to admit with the exception of his two goals I barely noticed him all game but if he had 28 touches then he obviously was in the best 10. Players who were ahead of him though would include Chapman, Johnson, Scarlett, Ling and Mooney.

I thought Chappy was stiff in 2007. Although Johnno was everywhere in the first term, I thought Chappy had more of an impact on the game for longer than SJ did. Whether it be setting up goals, kicking them himself, taking screamers or even spoiling marks in the backline, Chappy did it all in '07.

Definitely Chappy for me in 07 - Johnno was extremely lucky that he apparently did not even have an opponent for the game (well in the first quarter, anyway). Clearly people decided upon their vote there & then - i.e. the game was all over! Fortunately Chappy received one in 09, but (don't shoot me down) for me Gram was the best, most consistent player for the day (remember that whilst Chappy received 3 votes from 3 judges, Gram received votes from all 5) & whilst I agree that Bartel was the correct pick last year, if Tomahawk had managed to convert 1-2 of his key grabs in the final 1/4, things may well have been very different (but, of coruse, this isn't a hypothetical)...

They didn't get wrong SJ,Chappy and Bartel who could argue.
But personally , me at the ground had Scarlett in 07 , Taylor in 09 and SJ in 2011.

In 2007 , there were plenty that could have laid a legit claim.

In 09 , Mrs Turbo though Rooke , my thoughts were simply that without Taylor , Riewoldt would have kicked 3+
If Hawkins was kicking like he is now , no doubt he would have got the norm. But for SJ to do what he did , off the back of his knee was simply his best performance ever imo.

IMO -

2007 - Chapman BOG, Johnson and Scarlett equal second
2009 - Chapman BOG, Taylor second, Rooke third
2011 - Bartel and Selwood equal BOG, Hawkins next in line. If Hawk had kicked just one in the first half it may have been a different story.

I reckon they got it 100% correct every time.
2007 for me was the easiest to call, SJ did it when the game was still to be won, 3 goals up to the 2 min mark of the second quarter tells you that.
He did it early and took the game away from port more than any other player.

I thought Hawkins deserved it on the day but when I watched the replay it was clear that they had made the right choice.

Agreed. Hawkins shattered Collingwood's confidence and Bartel took full advantage of it. But more than that he kept us in the game when it got pretty hairy before half time.

Scarlett a maybe in 2007. But rightfully the award was based on the first Q and a bit. Johnson was very good when it was up for grabs. Surprised no mention of Kelly at all - if you think I'm gaggin' sit down and watch that first quarter. Again! He was really good in close doing some hard stuff.

its a sad indictment that scarlett didn't win the norm in 07 the whole game plan was brought about by the ability to play out of the back... honestly I would like to see the stats on rushed behinds from 07-11...
its a legitimate argument that you have to win the ball when its up for grabs, but 08 ablett was bog but the hodge got the nod.. if you need norm smith type moments its ottens chase down in 07, rookes 2nd efforts in 09 and varcoe's goal in 11.

I thought if Hawkins had kicked straight and ended with 5 or 6 he would have easily won it.

For 2007 I'd say the following played as well or better than Bartel:

Scarlett, Johnson, Chapman, Corey, Ling, Harley (obliterated Danielle Motlop), Mooney.

Bartel was good in 2007, Ablett ironically was quiet.

The Norm Smith now is as much about the media story as actual performance. Johnson wasn't any better than Chapman or Scarlett (I personally would have picked Scarlett), but it was a better media story. Same with Hodge in 2008, to me he wasn't even Hawthorn's best player. But the story rules now.

Not to mention the guy he annihilated still hasn't gotten over it. You'll go a long way to see a more comprehensive thrashing of an opponent on the big stage.
