AFL Club
North Melbourne
Question:
Apparently said on commentary (didn't hear it myself) that 0-5 = north's worst start since 1972. I could've sworn there was a season under Scott that we started 0-6....Anyone know??

Any other noteworthy stats about our club that might make interesting discussion and might take the edge off an otherwise heartbreaking season ahead?

It would be fitting for Scott to break his own record.

I'm not heartbroken. It is what it is. You reap what you sow, we haven't planted a bountiful high quality crop. We planted a lot of potatoes.

It's because we're not fit.

Well 1972 was my first year going to watch North - we went 1-21 - i was young but i remember the celebrations going on with that 1 win!

Highest average player ratings (AFL rank) 2017
56th: Jarrad Waite (97)
66th: Ben Cunnington (94.3)
89th: Shaun Higgins (88.5)
107th: Jack Ziebell (86.6)
121st: Todd Goldstein (84.8)
132nd: Trent Dumont (82.4)
144th: Luke McDonald (80.6)

2016 North Melbourne rankings
52nd: Todd Goldstein (96.8)
60th: Jack Ziebell (94.5)
85th: Sam Gibson (89)
92nd: Brent Harvey (87.6)
97th: Daniel Wells (86.8)
98th: Nick Dal Santo (86.5)

118th: Jarrad Waite (83.7)
124th: Andrew Swallow (82.7)
189th: Ben Cunnington (75.4)

This highlights for me:
1. We still don't have an elite player who can crack the top 50, let alone the top 10.
2. We miss Jarrad Waite when he’s not playing.
3. Three players have elevated their games this season to fill the void left by Harvey, Wells and Dal Santo (all top 100 in 2016): Shaun Higgins, Trent Dumont, Luke McDonald.
4. Ben Cunnington has elevated his game this year, but Andrew Swallow has gone backwards (220th (72.4) in 2017). Sam Gibson has also gone backwards, but not by as much. Same for Todd Goldstein.

Aside: Josh Kelly is 37th in the AFL player ratings this year. Was 79th last year.

My old man was telling me about that season. Must have sucked big time

Wow that's comprehensive. How'd you get all that? Impressive (that you got those stats!) The story they tell, not so

It also highlights that we don't have any A graders in our midfield as well. Elite and A grade midfielders rarely let 5 goal leads slip, our midfield has done so 3 times this year, regardless of how good the opposition is perceived.

Google is your friend. Footywire and AFL Final Siren are the websites I went to. I like stats. They do tell a story.

The positive for me was seeing the elevation of Dumont and McDonald. We knew getting Higgins back would help.

What do our metres gained stats look like compared to other midfield groups.

Think that would be an interesting look especially averages broken down individually as well as on a whole

Made a gf in 74, won one in 75 and 77 and a decent 70s as a whole.

So maybe its a sign of things to come for us in the next few years :)

But we wont be doing a 1-21 season. We're a much better side than that.

From the Ben Brown article during last week (www.afl.com.au/news/2017-04-19/how-a-big-roo-can-lose-the-sideshow-bob-status) came this statistic:

"North Melbourne has lost 12 of 14 (86%) matches without Waite, while winning 26 of 38 (68%) with him."

tumblr_mii0h10uXe1s2piulo1_500.gif

Make that losing 13 of 15 now (87%) without him.

67 turnovers on average per game.

We turn it over and get scored against.

Fix our skill level and we'll improve, until this happens we can expect the same results.
How much of that is pure (lack of) skill or decision-making, and how much game plan and/or players not running to the right spots, forcing poor disposal through lack of choice?

Kind of wish that this sort of player wasn't Jarrad Waite, and maybe some like Cunnington who's a touch more likeable, less maverick and more in the team than jaz. Jarrad f Waite eh.

I'd say majority of it is through poor execution and decision making.
I'd also like to know what the turnover rate is per qtr to see if fatigue is a factor.

It is indeed our worst start since 1972. That year (unfortunately I remember it well) we lost our first 16 matches before finally managing our only win in Round 17 (South Melbourne by 8 points). Believe it or not we lost the first 4 in 1975--our premiership year.

I hope this season does not become like 1934. That season we lost all 18, but 7 were lost narrowly--by 11,7,15,2,5,5,and 2 points.

Haven't read the article yet but can imagine as a stand alone statistic it's not indicative,

If you were to combine it with things such as metres gained from a stoppage, turnovers, metres gained by foot,
I'd suggest our pure mids and wings would be pretty low compared to the top mids in the comp.

Our defenders would have medium to high metres gained but inversely probably poor turnover stats
