North v. Melbourne (1895)

The action of the Melbourne in crowding on the ball effectually preveatej any scoring, though they were repeatedly free-kicked for delaying play, and the final bell rang out North's defeat by 4 goals to 2. It is to be regretted that those unfair and unmanly tactics of holding the ball ,ut side of the arena by local barrackers should have hºppened, but Melbourne were to blame for a lot of wasting jime

Sure this wasn't from this year?

Here's one for you - try finding a reference to the "shinboners" in any press prior to 1935. Then try searching the name "the gluepotters".

Thanks Royals - I need all the help I can get - the stuff in the North Melbourne Advertiser which was around from about 1890 to 1910 is fantastic. Given these resources have just come on line I doubt whether Gerard Dowling had access to them

True to your word here is a reference from the Argus in 1935 - try not to read the computerised text but zoom on the text of the actual newspaper - apparently they were called the glue potters because the Arden Street ground was so shithouse: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/art...rs&searchLimits=l-state=Victoria|||l-title=13

Whatever help you need PM. Alternatively travel to the Footy History Board, you might find it interesting.
