Not Giving In and Never Tear Us Apart (songs)

What we should be doing with NTUA is making it clear it's NOT for opposition fans to join in with. That shits me. It's not a sing-a-long, it's an on-going and continued declaration of war on all those against us. Even if at times the last 3 or 4 years, it's been us fans singing it against some of those AT the club.

So you hijack the song and the stop others from singing it? You don't have any claim on the song's ownership FFS.

And how are you going to legislate that exactly? Let's say an opposition supporter starts singing along at Adelaide Oval. What are you going to do about it? Hurl abuse? Spit at them? Call the Police?

Hilarious.

He’s obviously suggesting that we’ll pin you down and force you to wear a PB for the rest of the game.

LOL. The same way you'd look at an opposition fan if they started singing the Hawks team song when they ran out. You'd give them a 'WTF? look' and 'Why are you singing our song?' afterwards.

Surely you can't be serious.

FWIW, I visited the Adelaide Oval for Port vs Hawthorn a couple of years back. Great stadium, great atmosphere and I thought the Port supporters were terrific despite Hawthorn winning the game.

But you can't just demand people not sing along to a song that you don't actually have any legal claim on.

Yes, I can do all of those things...but I cannot actually stop them from singing it, as you are suggesting.

"Making it very clear that it's NOT for opposition fans to join in with" is what you said.

How will you make it clear exactly? I'll get the popcorn.

My take away from that post by Andre was the bit where we started singing this with the club and will now sing it at them until they sort their s**t out. Feel free to join in as far as I’m concerned.

Let's say that all opposition supporters visiting Adelaide Oval for a Port game decided to sing along to NTUA...that would pretty much take that song away from you, wouldn't it?

Andre how would you cope mate? Finger wagging? Dirty looks? I'll give you the tip, dirty looks and finger wagging happen to opposition supporters at the footy, faux-ownership of a song or not.

My take was the bit where Port fans should make it clear that us inferior folk are NOT to join in.

When they ruined NGI by putting a little intro to it was when that died for me.

The absolute best part of NGI is the slow, quiet intro. That slow dum... dum.... dum... that starts to build higher and faster.

It would start to ring out at an unexpected time and people would react, stand up and slowly get into it, and by the time they were all clapping, it was at the up tempo part where the clapping isn't awkward and drawn out.

Now with the stupid intro, it's like a prompt "Get up and start clapping power fans" without actually saying it. Everyone feels forced to get up, we all start clapping way too early in the song which makes it feel like it drags, and the initial slow intro/feel of the surprise of the song starting has been killed.

I mean they even call out the time of it on the run sheet like it is a rehearsed piece of the entertainment for ****s sake. I mean seriously keep that stuff in house, don't advertise it like that. Let it be the organic, natural run out song it started as and the song that got us up and about.

Anyway, whoever is in charge of the game day entertainment that does this sort of 'commercialising'/bastardising of these naturally developed fan driven engagement activities needs a rocket.

I mean if I ever hear "Stand up and hold those scarves up high Power fans" again I'll go ape.
You are 100% right. I love NGI and NTUA, but please drop the prompting, we don't need it and it's cringeworthy.

I'm a bit over NTUA personally if we're being completely honest, but the vast majority of the crowd still gets around it, and as long as that's still the case, we should keep doing it. I'm not selfish enough to think that my personal opinion outweighs 40k other crowd members.
For me I more see it as something we now do as just part of the routine for regular games, but when a big game comes, and something is on the line, that's when it again stands out as an engager of the crowd.

One day our supporters will organically be singing NTUA at a Grand Final, and it's going to be some of the most spine tingling s**t EVER.

That first game was perfect...

What are you crapping on about ... Why don't you do some research .. Port paid the rights for it .. So go and crap somewhere else.

There is a special place reserved in hell for anybody at the PAFC who had anything to do with the cultural destruction of what was formerly an iconic Australian rock song.

Michael Hutchence would be turning in his grave.
Chad? Don't be salty...

I'd assume much of the game day entertainment staff that were with the club leading into the AO move have moved on from the club.

I know of a couple who have, so I'd assume there would be more. They would have taken a lot of intel with them regarding the entertainment and an understanding of the organic nature of it and emotion surrounding the club at the time.

NGI and NTUA has become a bit of a chore for two reasons

- the prompting from ground announcers
- the horrendous style of football we play makes its hard to get enthusiastic on game day

This doesn't mean I'd like to see it go as such. I'd just like the club to find a way to return it back to the people...oh and play decent footy that'll get me excited again.

NTUA needs to stay. Agree that it should just start with no announcement.

It is the anthem for the fans - to say, "I don't give a toss if the players are inspired by this. It is for me/us, not them nor the coaches. It is my way of saying I love this club despite piss poor performances. My badge of honour. My way of rejoicing with like minded souls".

The "never give in" song lost all meaning for me when our results turned to pelican poop, and our foisting of the white flag under pressure became endemic :huh:
