Geography is set to play a key role in deciding which clubs are granted licences in the inaugural NRL Women's Premiership next season, with officials keen to start the competition with teams based in New Zealand, Queensland and regional NSW, as well as Sydney.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg on Wednesday announced a six-team competition featuring 40 centrally-contracted Jillaroos stars and match payments for all other players as the centre point of a 2018 women's program. There will also be a stand-alone State of Origin and Pacific and trans-Tasman Tests.

Four teams are set to compete in the inaugural NRL Holden Women's Premiership in August with the Brisbane Broncos, Sydney Roosters, St George Illawarra Dragons and New Zealand Warriors the first participating clubs.

Geographical location played a major part in the decision-making process according to NRL CEO Todd Greenberg. The decision came after talking with senior members of the Jillaroos squad and coaching staff.

It is believed the NRL's decision to spread the clubs across two states and two countries was done to initially cover as many areas as possible with an eye on expansion in future seasons.

Thought they could easily get 6 maybe even 7. Obviously want to test the waters first.

Yeah strange having just 4.
Should of tried in areas they don't have mens, like Gosford, Sunshine Coast or Wagga

Really do think the shire got screwed here.
they've been the number 1 supporter of the womens game and yet the chooks get in.

Just like the AFLW with Carlton and Collingwood.

I would of liked to have seen teams merge for a womens side, and have a minimum of 6 sides. Sides can only pick players from their area.
1. Say Easts, Canterbury and Souths form Sydney Sparks
2. Parra, Wests and Penrith form Western Pride
3. Cronulla and STG/Ill form Southern Saints
4. NQ, Brisbane and the GC could form Qld Heat
5. Manly, Melbourne, WA, SA and Tas, form Allies play out of each area at least once.
6. NZ side.

They were talking about this on one of the footy shows today and one of them said that Souths helped the Rooters organise their strategic plan a few days before it closed and Souths didn't get in but Rooters did.
WTF, how could that workout?

Still it is the NRL and they can't have a team not named Sydney in it.
