Inadvertently, Robert Warnock might have created the beast. Seeking a return to Victoria after three seasons in the enormous shadow of ruckman Aaron Sandilands at Fremantle, Warnock’s eventual move to Carlton was, remarkably, the most expensive trade of the 2008 player movement period. The Blues relinquished pick 24 as well as a swap of later selections to obtain the ruckman, who hung around for seven modest years at Princes Park.

It seems the higher ranked clubs are favoured in free agency but the lower ranked clubs get bigger draft advantages.
Eg The bottom teams get picks 1, 19, 37 and the premiers get picks 18, 38, 56 ect.
Plus players are forced out of top placed clubs due to salary cap pressure.
