If so, I hope so. Colour me naive, but I'd want my coach to be good at, you know, coaching.

I know it's a full package required nowadays, but we've got a fresh example down the road of a coach who is engaging with the media, spouts cliches like he's swallowed a Vince Lombardi biography, seems to be good at motivation but has no Plan B. Hell, even Plan A is suss.

And look how that's going.

Those cliches and hard words work with an older generation where everyone knew you got yelled at. The players coming through now need to be motivated in different ways for each of them. Coaching has changed so much in such a short period with knowledge on how different people learn and the different methods required to get the best out of each of those athletes. Pyke has a strong advantage in that he has not only worked in footy clubs, so understands them at very different levels, he has also worked in business with completely different mindset required and different personality types to deal with. Add in that he has said he very much utilises the knowledge of his wife who works in the HR area in how to deal with certain situations and personality types, I think Pyke will be quite an effective coach. Clarkson is one who I very much put in that similar type of coaching grouping in not being like the traditional fire and brimstone coach from days long past.

I have a theory about David Teague. It's a good one. Here is the man now:

What do you notice about him? that's right, his haircut is 20 years old. It's not even stylish. Contrast that against all the other coaches and ex-players you see in the league these days - for example, Dermie, who consistently preens himself like a peacock even though he's what over 50, but still trying to be 25?

If this guy is this unfashionable but still has a job in the AFL, he must know what he's doing.

Holy crap, he's only 34. I had no idea. And we share a birthday. At some point the illuminati will get involved too i'm sure. But there you go, a 34 year old man who doesn't have a stylish haircut these days when he's on Assistant Coach money = man too focused on football.

Also, go Pyke.
We've brought in a former defender as our forward coach. And it's worked! Our forward line is the most dangerous in the AFL. Of course we have the cattle, but my hat goes off to Teague for taking full advantage of that, and improving our attack as time goes by. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days, against a weak opposition, we score 200 points.

And we put a forward in charge of the backlines.

I'll reserve judgement on JPod as a defensive coach for the time being.

He has turned Hartigan into a solid defender! He now leaves his man to assist. He is hitting targets! Last year it was 'get him off'. Can't ask for more than that for JPod at this stage
