The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel (NSP) has today named a 14-player squad for the first three Carlton Mid ODI Series matches against England beginning in Melbourne on January 12.

The 14-player Australian squad is:

Michael Clarke ©
George Bailey (vc)
Nathan Coulter-Nile
Xavier Doherty
James Faulkner
Aaron Finch
Brad Haddin
Mitchell Johnson
Shaun Marsh
Glenn Maxwell
Clint McKay
James Pattinson
David Warner
Shane Watson

Commenting on the squad, National Selector John Inverarity said:

“We believe this is a well-balanced squad that can build on the promising form displayed in our most recent limited overs series against England and India.

“Michael Clarke, Shaun Marsh and James Pattinson have been included after being unavailable through injury for the series against India in October. Phillip Hughes, Adam Voges, Moises Henriques and Callum Ferguson are unlucky to lose their places from the India ODI squad as they have all been in good form. Adam Voges is particularly unlucky as his ODI performances over the past year have been very good. There are three outstanding players in Clarke, Warner and Marsh coming back and we believe their inclusion provides the squad with several batting options.

Voges and Hughes out for Warner and Clarke from the India series team.

Anyone want to elaborate on why Doherty is in the squad? Average of 38 or so and an economy rate of almost 5, what's the big deal? Why not give Lyon pr Steve O'Keefe a crack?

O'Keefe is a very ordinary OD bowler, rightly nowhere near the team. Lyon would be an alright option but his Ryobi stats are pretty much the exact same as Doherty's ODI numbers.

Doherty takes a wicket a game and going under five is a good economy rate. No need to fix what isn't broken.

Yeah, seen O'Keefe's ODD numbers? averages 66! Lyon is no upgrade either. We tried Ahmed and he got belted in his few ODI appearances. Until something better comes along Doherty is going to be our number 1 spinner in the short formats.

Voges is the unluckiest of the players to miss out, pretty good squad in all though.

I'd leave Finch out. Call me old fashioned but I wouldn't be picking batsmen who can hardly hold a spot in the Shield side.
Why would that have any bearing on ODI selection?

That's as good as we can pick outside of those unavailable through injury, Starc, Voges. Impressive line up when we can have guys like Johnson and Faulkner possibly batting @ 8 and 9 :thumbsu:

Exactly. Horses for courses.

I'd be tempted to play four quicks and leave Doherty out. One - Doherty is terrible. Two - Watson will probably not bowl much, if at all.

Maxwell is a serviceable enough spin option

Pretty much full strength besides Starc and Voges (injured)
Good to see Patto back

Pattinson is just depth in that squad. Would not select him ahead of McKay, Johnson, Faulkner if we go with 3 quicks and Doherty as the main spinner.

Though I guess there is always the option of playing Faulkner at 7 and playing an extra quick.

True, just had a look. I've seen his numbers in Shield and T20 and didn't realise his ODD figures were actually that bad. I would be in favour of Lyon if Doherty loses it a bit and gets belted. I'm just judging Doherty on his Test record I guess, never a good idea ;)

Hughes is very very stiff, his performances were good against India. Certainly better than Finch I thought.

We were scoring 300+ and he was striking at 70 odd...he isn't stiff at all, he should have never been in the OD side opening!

With Finch and Warner opening we'll either be 2-30 or 0-150 in the first 10.

Watson at 3, I'll live with that, Watson is one of the best ODI players, and Clarke at 5, Bailey....we have enough batsmen.

Warner
Finch
Watson
Clarke (c)
Bailey
Maxwell
Haddin (+)
Faulkner
Johnson
McKay
Doherty

Coulter-Nile, Pattinson, Marsh.

Disappointed White didn't get a gig and expanding the squad to 15, was the best player in the ryobi. Any ideas on the poms side?
