Byrnes is locked into a forward pocket role with stints in the midfield, and nobody will push him out.

Not this season anyway.

Melbourne have told Wines they will pick him if available.
It seems that every time I look at the highlight reels for these top kids I change my mind about who I'd like to see us pick up, but the I've pretty much settled on Wines now, so if this is true it's great news. He looks like a complete footballer .. strength, balance, vision, composure and a maturity in his style that could see him making a mark in his first season. I can't deny his being a Victorian helps too as he won't be getting homesick and disappearing at the end of his initial contract. If we retain pick 20 and Mayes was to slip that far it would be even better.

Im also impressed with Jake Neade, a small but incredible quick midfielder from the Northern Territory. Could be worth a late draft pick.

I hope Wines cleans up his goal kicking if we take him at 4.

Kicked something like 9 goals 23 behinds in TAC cup last season, and in the Under 18 Championship games I watched he kicked a bunch of points from within 40 metres of goal with not much pressure.

I like that he loves to get forward and hit the scoreboard though.

That is a concern. 9 goals 23 behinds shows he has a problem in that regard. I suppose it's a question of whether or not his midfield skills make up for that. I suspect they do.

Lewis Jetta doesn't have much of a problem with it.

I suppose there's only one way to find out whether it's bad form or bad goalkicking.

Anyone still cringe about the fact we could have had Lewis Jetta in the last pick of the rookie draft if we listened to Neville's mother?

Not as if Strauss is so flash himself.
I'm so over the Strauss hate.

He'd cemented himself last year then bloody broke his leg in the worst incident I'd seen since Nathan Brown.
He came back and played fairly well after not being able to do shit for a year due to funnily enough, breaking his leg, in a backline that copped inside 50 after inside 50.

I'm a Strauss fan, yet everyone seems to shit all over him for no particular reason. His kicking is sublime, he's got good awareness. Needs to put on some size still, but losing some size is what'll happen when you miss 12 months with a leg break.

My 'Strauss hate' pretty much became a thing against Adelaide. All he had to do was get the ball forward in the first half when Green was on fire, instead he kept trying flashy cross 50 shit. In still yet to see his incredible kicking skills on more than a 1 of 10 basis - like Addam Maric.

I have one source at the club. I was sleeping with the daughter of someone high up at Melbourne, coincidence really, didn't know until i went round for dinner.

Not a romantic thing anymore but we're still pretty good friends. Don't ask for any info really cause actually like her.

But heard after the U18s that Wines was told he would be picked up by the Dees is 'all went according to plan'.

I think so far it has.

I agree with you mate. While I'm not totally sold on him, I'm more than happy to give him a chance and think he's been solid considering the leg break.

Wonder whether he's a natural defender though. Could he could break into the midfield or wing if he gets fit enough?

The guy will be in our best 22 and after a pre-season will give us some much needed skill of half back. It takes a couple of years to come back from a busted leg and he was pretty lucky to even play last year.

I keep telling people, good footballers look very ordinary in a bad side.. Playing in our back line this year would be like working in a diamond mine in Sierra Leone.

I just had a look at his highlights and geez, the kid works hard and moves really well in traffic..Wines and Viney in the team give us 2 wrecking balls...bound to end getting more clearances.

Im all for him!

i agree 100% all about Strauss, it is players copping injuries like Strauss, Blease, Gysberts and Tapscott which is holding us back alot.

All should be 50 gamers but sitting on about 20 instead that is alot of experience for young players

Yeah I'm sold on the idea of Wines at 4, can never have too much grunt

Although, we'd probably have to deal with supporters doing the obligatory names wrong (Maloney, Robinson etc.) and we'd end up with Vines and Winey

Yep, plus - Wines is a genuine inside distributor and deliverer.

He's not just a Brad Sewell (not that he's a bad player, just you wouldn't use a top 5 pick on him).

As long as GWS aren't w***ers of the highest order and select three mids with their first three picks I think we'll be getting him.
