Orlando seems to go ok without one. It's not like Minnesota's getting within 1 and failing to finish...they've blown a ridiculous number of double-digit leads this season.

Four

San Antonio (twice), Utah, Boston. There may be more. Urgh.

So because I bought into that idea, that would make me Charlie Villanueva...so you're basically calling me a cancer patient

Ironically, there probably isn't a better look-alike for Hans Moleman in all of sports than CV. :D

There's got to be more than that - I've watched all of those live, and I'm sure they don't stop choking when I'm not around.

With Lebron and Wade dominating at the minute and sharing the Player of the Month honours it got me thinking.

Is it possible that they could share the season MVP award?

Would be an incredibly ghey cop out by the NBA but if ever a season it could be done - this could be it.

I currently have them at number 1 and 2 in the MVP race with CP3, Dirk, Howard close behind.

They sit 5th and 6th in scoring
2nd and 9th is total point/rebounds/assists
and 2nd and 3rd in ESPN's PER

Lets look at the other contenders...

CP3 is averaging under 17 pts a game. Who was the last MVP to average that many points?
Dirk is injured. BUT could push later in year.
Howard is not destroying anymore than any other year that he has not won it.
Kobe is not playing like an MVP
Durant could push later in the year and leads the scoring despite playing below par for him. If he starts to turn it on then he is a big chance.
KLove is averaging 21 points and 15 rebounds a game:thumbsu: But he aint gonna win MVP.
Rose/Amare are having their best year but they are not in Lebron/Wade status.

You're killing me with your lack of Manu love, Westy ;)

As far as sharing goes, it's near impossible - there's 100-odd media types voting for first-second-third etc...it would take an absolute miracle for them to end up on the same number.

I think the way the season's shaping up, Wade looks to be in pole position. They've been hard to split this season, and there are too many media tools out there with an anti-LBJ agenda for him to win.

Theres also been Oklahoma City, Charlotte, NY Knicks, and Phoenix.

Better play from the point guard is crucial in late game situations, this is hopefully where Ricky Rubio comes in.

No it isn't because neither of them should win it.

When LeBron and Wade are 2.5/3 of the Miami Heat with Bosh being the other .5 they should be dominating the stats like this because they are the only players on the team. The rest are just filling out the roster.

CP3 is averaging under 17 pts a game. Who was the last MVP to average that many points?

Steve Nash who averaged less than that in 04-05 (15.5 PPG) (11.5 APG) and 05-06 (18.8 PPG) (10.5 APG).

Chris Paul also doesn't have a LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh to take the focus away from himself.

Howard is not destroying anymore than any other year that he has not won it.

Still balling better than Wade and LeBron.

Rose/Amare are having their best year but they are not in Lebron/Wade status.

They might not be overall but they have been just as good if not better for their teams than LeBron and Wade.

Dirk, CP3, Manu, Rose, Amare and Howard (no order there) are far better candidates for the MVP and any of them should feel hard done by at this stage if LeBron or Wade got it ahead of them.

Some good points Dez:thumbsu:

My answers in bold.

No it isn't because neither of them should win it.

If the rest are just filling out the roster than you have to consider they have been doing pretty well with one of the best records in the NBA especially of late and number 1 power ranking. The fact that their help is so average speak volumes for how they have been playing.

Steve Nash who averaged less than that in 04-05 (15.5 PPG) (11.5 APG) and 05-06 (18.8 PPG) (10.5 APG).

Paul is 16 and 9 so pretty close to Nash numbers so you would have to give him a big chance. Good call.

Chris Paul also doesn't have a LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh to take the focus away from himself.

Yes that helps him but I dont agree that the good player surrounded by the most spuds should win.

Still balling better than Wade and LeBron.

I disagree. But its close.

They might not be overall but they have been just as good if not better for their teams than LeBron and Wade.

Yep good for their teams but not better players this year IMO.

BTW,
Rose 24-5-9
Paul 17-4-10

On those numbers you would have to put Rose ahead of Paul but CP3 more efficient. Maybe why NBA.com. have Rose as leading the MVP race.

2009-10 Lebrone - Best PER Lebrone
2008-09 Lebrone - Best PER Lebrone
2007-08 Kobe - Best PER Lebrone (Kobe 7th)
2006-07 Dirk - Best PER Wade (Dirk 2nd)
2005-06 Nash - Best PER Dirk (Nash 14th)
2004-05 Nash - Best PER KG (Nash 18th)
2003-04 KG - Best PER KG
2002-03 Duncan - Best PER Tmac (Duncan 4th)

"The award is decided by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first to fifth place selections. Each first-place vote is worth 10 points; each second-place vote is worth seven; each third-place vote is worth five, fourth-place is worth three and fifth-place is worth one. Starting from 2010, one ballot was cast by fans through online voting. The player with the highest point total wins the award".

Can anyone find anything on criteria? I dont think NBA have ever defined it.

I think the criteria is 'most valuable player'.

It definitely is not most highest statistical mathematical equation rating.

Confusion about the definition of MVP only exists if you elect to be confused by it.

Who is in line for the best 6th man of the year award this season. TBH I havnt paid much attention to it but ive liked Jamal Crawfords work again. Marion, Brown and Ty Lawson are some others that ive noticed but otherwise its been a thin year as far as talent coming off the bench goes

Jamal hasn't been as good as last year. He hasn't had as many of those ridiculous Jamal quarters of awesome, and Teague has been getting more minutes with the 2nd unit so he runs the ball when it used to be Jamal.

I love the man though, amazing talent. Unfortunately he's spent his entire career being a poor mans AI with shit teams playing Iso-Jamal and never really been coached to play in a lineup. Excellent for a 6th man job though.

Considering the Oxford has 19 distinct non-technical definitions for "value", I'd think having a wee crack at a definition might be in the interest of the integrity of the award.

Currently, it's the "Most valuable positive story to ESPN" award - they wield so much influence that everyone else gets in line. They're responsible for the farcical consensus that we see in the voting as a result. e.g. 2001: Iverson gets 92 first-place votes compared with 25 for Shaq+Duncan combined! 2008: Kobe gets double the first-place votes of Paul+KG combined.

People like to pot the Brownlow and fair enough. But at least there's a rigorous process in place there where someone votes every single game and it's not just left to media jerkoffs who only watch their own team and vote on the basis of their nightly sportscentre viewing.

My nominees for the Sixth Man Award:

  • Tyrus Thomas (Charlotte Bobcats)
  • Thaddeus Young (Philadelphia 76ers)
  • Brad Miller (Houston Rockets)
  • Hakim Warrick (Phoenix Suns)
  • Shannon Brown (Los Angeles Lakers)
Also, what do people make of this:

Michael Beasley

Points Per Game

2008-09 - 13.9
2009-10 - 14.8
2010-11 - 21.8

PER

2008-09 - 17.2
2009-10 - 16.1
2010-11 - 17.4

Is his improvement this year overrated (playing nearly 10 minutes more per game than in his rookie season, with a similar usage percentage and shooting percentages, so it's logical his scoring average would go up), or was his rookie season underrated?
