"Official" number 1 draft pick thread

What is it about South Australians and their total lack of awareness? That Rich run-down is Bell-esque stuff from the SA lad, clueless.

On the basis of those three videos alone, I'd have Naitanui. I'm no recruiter though and I'm sure we'll take Jack Watts.

thats it, Watts and Warnock, just what we need, a few more W's:thumbsu:

If it's any consolation they're going to give White the arse. Should balance things a bit.

I'm no recruiter either, but i try to get to see a bit of the young kids when i get a chance, i'm especially interested this year seeing as we'll feature so prominently.

Based on the video's you would take Naitanui. But they're only 1 minute videos of 1 game and you also need to consider the following.

-The Watts video is against vic country who were a good side and VM beat by only a point. Watts was best on in this game and won the Larke medal for best player of the championships.
-The Rich video is against SA and some of the Rich highlights he beats Hartlett in a one on one, Hartlett is the next best rated mid and should go top 5.
-The Naitanui video is against NSW/ACT, they'll be lucky to have 5 players drafted, so the opposition is much poorer.

Thanks for those highlights.
Naitanui looks like he could be anything but Watts seems like the safe option.

I won't complain what ever the decision. Watts would sort out the forward line issues within a few years but It would also be exciting to see Naitanui in Dees colours next year. He's a unique player and would draw a crowd from his first game ??
can't wait for the draft

Whoever the defender in that last piece of play who goes for mark of the century with two hands in somebody's back is PLEASE DO NOT DRAFT HIM. Most farcical attempt at stopping a high ball into the forward line ever.

Much like whoever Watts played on against Vic Country. No presence, no clue.

The go home factor if we draft an interstate boy is a big fear of mine.
Club must weigh this factor carefully. Scott Thompson anyone? Not again!

I think take Watts with first pick.
Wonder who Bailey wants as No 1?

Go Dees

Naitanui lays some ferocious tackles for a big man... and that run down shows hes quick... i'd still have watts though for all the reasons said before... just lock him in the gym for pre-season, and we'll have johnno brown the second in no time

just found this on watts:
http://blogs.abc.net.au/grandstand/2008/07/interview-jack.html

Theres an audio interview on there that he has with grandstand radio... sounds like a pretty well spoken kid, something we could do with down at melbourne, as it really isnt jonesys caper... also says though that he is unsure of whether he'll nominate because he wants to finish year 12... any more on that?

Would be so hard to overlook Watts. Seems to fit the ball perfectly.

Ziebell, who will go around 6-7-8, is an excellent prospect, if were looking at a smoky.

Yes, i'm sure that now that we've all but been give the No.1 pick that Barry Prendergast would go on radio and give the "best available" line and then be stupid enough to say he thinks that Naitanui is the best available.

We all know (i shouldn't make assumptions) "best available" is the line recruiters/coaches used when they don't want to answer draft questions.

Clubs never show their hand that clearly unless they are trying to influence other clubs, but it would be stupid for us to do seeing as whoever they pick after us wont effect our selections.

Or maybe he was stupid on purpose

I was at Swans/Subi today.

Naitanui did some really good stuff but doesn't work hard enough forward and back.
Luke Newick showed the way to beat him: Jump early and get position and smash him up.
Daniel Rich: I am conflicted here...this kid did some really classy stuff and kicked one very nice goal on the run and one after working his way through a pack...but I watched him pretty closely and he is so lazy when he doesn't have the ball it's not funny...at one stage the ball came out of Subi's back line with him standing on the edge of the square and he didn't break out of a walk until the ball hit the wing...if I was a tagger I would love to play on him...you'd only run 2km a game.
When he has to though, he has a good turn of pace

Please don't, that name gives me nightmares.

It has to be Watts IMO.

Saw some footage of Rich and he also looks very classy but I believe our need for a Power Forward is too great.

I think it will be a little different this year with the draft ,as the bottom two maybe 3 clubs could walk away with the player they would pick if they had the No.1 draft pick.

Everyone's a winner!

I'm in for Rich, he's Sylvia v 2.0 my kind of player!!!

Im guessing Watts will wait until he defintiely knows melbourne will finish last and get an indication of them that he definitely is their number 1 option. I rekon he wouldn't mind doing year 12 in melbourne whilst being on an AFL list, but would not want to move interstate to do year 12.

Watts has all but stated that he will be doing year 12 in victoria next year, similar to Dangerfield this year, even though he was drafted to Adelaide he's remained in Geelong to do year 12.

Unless he's waiting for the word from melbourne he might not nominate for a while yet. Draft nominations don't close until November 12, so he's got plenty of time yet. I'd say he might wait until after draft camp finishes, which is October 3.

*bump*

Thought we could keep this thread going as draft day draws nearer. Any news, reports, videos would be good to keep in here.

Well for anyone who's interested Watts will be in action for Sandringham on Sunday. 11am at Shepey Oval in Dandenong. Other players in the game worth noting are his team mate Vickery, who is considered a smoky for top 3 and is the other top ruckman in the draft beside Naitanui. Interestingly Watts is named to play in the centre

Naitanui hasn't been named in the best over the last 3 weeks but has managed a goal in each of the last 3 games. Rucking well but not doing huge amounts around the ground.

Rich is in pretty decent form, he's been in the best 2 out of the last 3 weeks, not BOG, kicking a few goals as well. Needs to be noted that Rich plays in the top team and they're more dominant then Geelong, they're on 19 wins & 1 lose compared to 2nd place 11wins, 7 losses & a draw. Other interesting thing about Rich's team is that next to his name in the best a few times is the one and only P Read. Philthy is tearing it up in the WAFL!!

Obviously we wait to see whether Watts nominates but can confirm he met with Freemantle this afternoon in what appeared to be an interveiw of sorts.
Hopefully that means he is considering nominating for this years draft. Better for us to be able to recruit a Victorian rather than a WA fella who may want to go home after 2 years (i try to forget the scotty thompson saga). Given the three best are said to be rich, nat and watts, we want him to nominate!
