No surprises there.

Despite Melbourne and the Dogs thinking they’ve had the longest running partnerships with women’s footy because of the exhibition teams.

North have been partnered with Melbourne Uni’s women’s side for over a decade.

Emma has been involved with North for over 8 years. I remember meeting her at a North run clinic about 7 years ago.

Won’t be the last from those MelbUni sides to move to North.

Shattered about Kearney leaving, but:

Anyone find it a little bit strange that we can confirm player movements before the AFL has even outlined the list management rules for how the expansion teams will enter the league? What are these players, free agents, needed to be traded, is there compensation?

Reality is, the contracts only go for the season. In the absence of rules from the AFL preventing her leaving, Dogs have no hold at all. What compensation the AFL organises is going to be tempered by the fact they have to find at least 60 new AFL players in Vic.

So who else will be on North's shopping list? Mo Hope, Ellie Blackburn?

Scott Gowans would have a good idea who he would want to get from Carlton too.

Meg Hutchins has been de-listed, not offered a contract for next year with Collingwood, will be playing for the Hawks in the VFLW

Should we have a separate de-listing thread or would this one work fine?

Foundation Collingwood player Meg Hutchins has agreed to join Hawthorn for the upcoming VFLW season, after being told she would not be offered an AFLW contract with the Magpies for 2019.

The 36-year-old played 12 games for Collingwood’s AFLW team over two seasons and was instrumental in establishing the club’s AFLW program as the Women’s Football Operations Manager in the competition’s inaugural season.

Hutchins moved into her role as Next Generation Academy Liaison last year and has since worked on developing women’s football pathways within the community.

In joining Hawthorn’s VFLW team, Hutchins will conclude her Collingwood commitments as of Friday 6 April.

Surely the main reason she is moving is because she isn't one of the dogs two marquee players and she will be a on a lot more money as a marquee player at North.

Complicating things this year is there will be two types of de-listings for Victorian clubs.

4 players totalling 100 points (some value system the AFL is coming up with) have to be coughed up by each Victorian side to go into an 'expansion draft' for North and Geelong to pick from.

Then (I think) another 3 de-listed, and to be made available in the general draft.

No firm rules have been released yet around this, only just media reports.

I thought the points thing had been canned after objections by the AFLPA?

Oh! Didn't see that. Got a link to the story?
Paywalled.

A quote from it posted elsewhere

Clubs rejected the league’s initial idea of using a points system to redistribute talent.

That plan would have seen players given a value, with each club’s top three stars valued at 50 points, players four to six valued at 30 points, players 7 to 14 valued at 20 points with the remainder apportioned 10 points each.

A club would have had to give up a total of 100 points in this model.

This model could have forced clubs to divest at least one of its stars, but protected it against being raided of all of its top talent.

The current plan, which is yet to be signed off by the league and clubs, could see a club lose four of its best players, or none, depending on its ability to convince stars to stay.

Clubs have backed their culture and own organisation’s appeal to hold onto their premier talent.

My understanding was it was more the AFLPA, but info is hard to come by. from the AFLPAs point of view, having a club basically just offer up specific players to expansion clubs based on an arbitrary points process was to restrictive on the players, who got no say. However, there is a significant lack of info, likely to continue until shortly before next draft.

That is a big blow for Rugby with the Super W league beginning this year.

One of their 7 best Australian players joining a rival league, along with a listed emergency player (top 10 female rugby player no doubt) from your olympic gold medal winning team? Big blow.

Geelong have made their first signing....

Former Melbourne marquee Mel Hickey is set to depart the club to join Geelong for the 2019 season.
It is the Cats’ first big signing ahead of their entry into the competition next season.
Hickey was one the first signings alongside Daisy Pearce in the inaugural AFLW side for Melbourne.
The 33-year-old is believed to have an off-field role with the club, a mentoring position which is set to start soon.

The AFL has today confirmed AFL Women’s player movement arrangements regarding the list development of the two expansion clubs, Geelong Cats and North Melbourne.

The two expansion clubs, due to be added to the competition for the 2019 season, presented list strategies to the AFL last week outlining which players they would be approaching.

The Expansion Signing Period will commence from Friday, May 11 and will continue until Monday, May 21.

Between these dates, only four players from any one club can transfer to the expansion clubs, unless agreed by the clubs and the AFL.

Geelong Cats and North Melbourne can approach players, with the players’ 2018 clubs having the right to make a counter offer. The AFL will approve all player movements before a player is signed.

Geelong Cats and North Melbourne will continue their list development during the NAB AFLW Trade Period and the NAB AFLW Draft.

In other changes, in 2019 the AFLW player payment structure will be expanded to four tiers.

Clubs will have flexibility with regards to the number of players in each tier, but clubs will be permitted to a maximum of three players in tier one.

Head of Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said the expansion signing period is ready to commence now the 2019 tiered payment structure has been approved by the AFL Players’ Association.

“This is another exciting step for our competition. We have worked closely with the AFLPA to ensure we have a payment structure that is appropriate at this stage of the competition,” she said.

“Welcoming more players into the competition has allowed us to expand the payment structure. This will also give the clubs more flexibility with their list management.

“Further discussion between the AFL and the AFLPA will determine actual player payments. This will take place once the 2019 program and associated revenue is confirmed.”

So dodgy how many AFLW players are employed by the club they play for.
Its not dodgy at all. Rules governing promotions/employment outside player payments are such that they specifically encourage it,where in mens it is banned. Instagram's of female players taking possession of a car from a club sponsor are relatively frequent, and not allowed in mens.

The women have to work outside playing football to live, and being able to give them a job in the club solves all sorts of problems.

If womens pay ever gets to the point that salary caps can give women a living wage, then it will be reigned in to prevent rorting, but its a long way from that yet.

You don’t see how it reduces the credibility of the competition to allow teams to pay players outside the salary cap?

If it was a salary cap that defined the financial future of the players, yes, but the AFLW salary cap is little more than an allowance. Clubs also only have space for a relatively small number of players in significant positions. The idea always was that the top players could develop a career in football using positions created by clubs, and given clubs could only create a handful of such positions each, it actually helps spread the top talent around. The alternative is to ban such positions, which might actually force some players out of the AFLW.

Do you honestly think salary is dictating the league at the moment?

Most of these girls that aren't marquee are on a couple of hundred $'s a game

It's more long term relationships these girls have had at lower leagues over their careers with certain coaches prior to AFLW and reuniting with old team mates and moving closer to home/supported sides etc that's dictating movement at the moment.

As I said earlier in this thread, most of North's recruits thus far are ex-MUWFC players, which was always going to be the case, we've had the longest relationship with a womens football club in the comp, by far.

It's not paying them outside the salary cap if they're doing legitimate work for the pay.

As long as the wages comply with the wage of any other person in that position I don't see any issue at all.

Gives the female players more stability in a league that is part time at best at the moment.

No did I say it was dictating the league?

It's all well and good to have no salary cap in its infancy but for this league to be taken seriously it has to be run seriously.

I also think they should all get full time wages under a salary cap.

But if you're using it as a bargaining tactic like Carlton and Collingwood with Davey then there's an issue as other clubs may not have a hundred grand to pay these players.

Would Collingwood still offer this position to Davey if she was to stay at Carlton?
