CONFIDENTIAL
OKEY STEPS DOWN
Craig Hutchison - EXCLUSIVE
Okeydoke7 has tonight shocked the SFA by standing down from the Mount Buller Demons co-captaincy effective immediately. The rumour was first floated by Confidential some time ago, before being confirmed by a short statement just moments ago. Okey, who accepted the captaincy just weeks ago, has cited a lack of commitment and lingering doubts over his future as his major reasons. Cooney has been announced as his successor.
Confidential understands that co-captain TigerGlory, who appointed Okey just weeks ago, has confronted Okey for "whoring himself out to other clubs." However, close sources believe that this is not a deciding factor. "TG and Okey get on well, no issues there. The issue is commitment and Okey doesn't think he is the man for the job."
Just weeks ago, Okey released a major press release in order to "steady the ship" at the Demons, to assure fans that they are not in turmoil and to label rumours of folding as "If circumstances arise whereby I feel co-captains isn't working, or someone else is more deserving, I will be quick to stand down. This is by no means a permanant decision, I see myself as filling the role until I have to."
Cooney was touted as the next captain in the same press release where Okey said "Posters like cooney are why I remain at this club, A player who deserves respect and recognition, but is not getting it. If he was playing for the bombers, he would be pumped up like the next big thing. Cooney, I daresay you will be the next captain of this proud club. I see myself as filling the shoes that you will one day occupy."
Little did anyone realise that Okey would occupy the boots for only a matter of weeks. In what can only be described as a blow to the Demons, okey released a short statement to congratulate Cooney.
"The captaincy was reservedly accepted and unreservedly passed on to a deserving poster. Cooney is the man the Demons need to do his best over the next 4-6 week period in building the club. I am not able to commit over this time frame and would only hold back the club. My stepping down is irrelevant, we should be celebrating a proud day for Cooney whose rise is underestimated."
Okey's future is undecided and despite initial reports, he is not certain to move clubs. A close source said "There is speculation that he is only creating controversey but I can assure you he is seriously considering a move. But he is leaning towards the Demons."
Okey is conflicted after having been approached by several clubs. In the latest developments, this is how confidential sees it playing out:
Baghdad Bombers - Probably the preffered option of any new club, Okey is believed to be impressed with what they have built. However, he would be unlikely to claim a first up FF or leadership spot and a reunion with Roughie would be interesting. Many limitations.
East Side Hawks - Seriously considered by okey on many occasions. Yet to be convinced.
Mount Buller Demons - Most likely option at this point, but Okey is understood to be feeling like a move to a bigger club.
Geelong Gumbies - Gumbies understood to have approached Okey, and Okey has entertained the idea but will not consider a move whilst their name remains, despite the fact he is happy with their budding list.
Roys FC - Okey expressed official interest in being a part of history if they made a comeback, but was unimpressed by the response and has all but ruled it out as an option.
West Coast Wonders - Has not been approached.
Fighting Furies - Ineligible.
Southern Dragons - Has not been approached.
