With Hird now gone and with Fletcher, Michael, Lucas and LLoyd all past their prime, who will become the new stars of Essendon, NOT the capable foot soldiers, but the bonifide superstars as these all were/are?

Ryder, Gumby, Dempsey, Stanton, Hislop and Jetta all have star potential

I dont think Stanton has star potential. He will be a good player but he wont be a super star midfielder.

Winderlich next year provided he is injury free and same goes with Laycock. Just watch them blossom into genuine stars.

I wouldnt say Scotty is past his prime. His last 2 seasons have been the best of his career & very unlucky not to be in last years & this years All_Australian team IMO!

Fletcher just made AA for the second time in his career.

Lucas extremely stiff to miss out.

How are they past their prime?
I would have thought they were in their prime.

the thread is coming from a brisbane fan ha ha. How could u make a judgement on our team. You only see the club from the outside. Fletcher has a new lease on life with Mal back there. Lucas last 2 years have been fantastic. Lloyd is on the mend from a very bad hamstring injury remember and only just missed winning the coleman by 10 or so goals. Past there prime.... yeah right.
As for our future stars we have plenty of them. AFL is the way it is now and anyone can become a star take players like Dean Cox, Nathan Thompson, Brad Ottens, Jarryd Roughead, and like who took a few years to hit there straps but are now dominate figures in the league.
That said Winderlich, Ryder, Houli, Monfries, Stanton and especially Davey are the future stars of our team.

Superstar midfielders as in Cousins, Black, Kerr, Bartel, Burgoyne, Hodge etc........you are delusional if you think Winderlich, Houli or Monfries will end up in that elite bracket  Stanton can though :thumbsu:

Just because they play for your team doesn't mean that they will become superstars :thumbsd:

you are ignorant to think only midfielders that rack up 30+ touches a game are the only superstars, you have no idea of their individual roles and therefore should not comment on things above ur analyitical comprehension, if you watched any melbourne football news you would know that winderlich was captioned as one of the years biggest improvers (showing off his class on many different occasions), and monfries on the hand was averaging 20 touches 2 goals a game for the last 6 weeks of the season.

Nice contradiction there buddy with your # of disposals thoughts :D

Get over the fact that you are an Essendon supporter and face the reality that 15 touches from a Hodge or Kerr is worth more than 35 of a Winderlich or Monfries

I'm from Melbourne and saw Monfries last three games with bomber mates of mine....I didn't see superstar quality......Cheynee Stiller averaged 23 disposals this season and hardly coughed up the ball once, but I don't rate him a future superstar

Seems Essendon supporters struggle with the FACT that not all kids become superstars no matter how much we want them to

You seem to struggle with the fact that if a bloke makes the AA side his career isn't in decline.

Fletcher can still be past his best and make the AA team :thumbsd: McLeod has been past his absolute best for 3 years yet he is the AA captain :thumbsu:

I never wrote anything about Fletcher not deserving an AA spot nor did I say that he is over the hill, just that he is over 30 and his best is probably past him.

If you want to respond after a stupid post to me, don't do it with another one :thumbsd:

He had the second best season of his 15 year career.
Take out 2000 and Fletcher was at his career best.

His form hasn't tappered at all. He's at his best.
Not slightly below his best but still good. He's at his best.

So he's "probably" past his best because he is over 30? People read into age way too much.

Eric Cantona was only just reaching his peak at age 30, same with Michael Jordan.

History suggests that at age 32, a footy player will not improve....if you want to argue this point with an example of one of the greatest sportsmen of all time in a different sport then go right ahead :D

I'm sure they won't improve, doesn't mean they're not in their prime.

It doesn't matter who I use as an example, sportsman can still play at their best after the age of 30, whether they're greats or not, they just do it at a higher level.

Personally I think Fletcher's best year was 2001 even though he hasn't been recognised by AA selectors until recently.
