Gout's race was about 13 minutes before the Diamond League stream came on at 4am EST.

Gout just can't get the right wind reading on a big event, either too much and over +2.0m/s or a negative wind.

A 20.10 into a wind of -1.9m/s is 19.89 at 0.0m/s and 19.75 at +2.0m/s. That comes from the wind calculator AdelaideGT linked during the Oz nationals.

His 20.02 in Ostrava Golden Spike meeting two weeks ago the wind reading was 0.0m/s

Bol finished 4th in the 800m that had 8 finalists from Paris Olympics + 3 others

He ran a PB and Oceania record in 1.42.55. Its one of the fastest 800m ever. Not as fast as last year's Olympic final but similar quality. He was 8th or 9th with 250m to run.

Wanyonyi won easily in 1.41.44 in the 10th fastest time ever and fastest this year. He also ran the =4th fastest last years and 6th fastest when he won at the Olympics.

Peter Bol SMASHES his Oceania/National Record in the 800m by 1.2 seconds in Monaco.

Gout Gout won the U23 200m in 20.10 into a formidable 1.9m headwind.

More Aussies chasing records in the Women's 1000m and Kurt Marschall still with no misses in the Pole Vault.

Interesting schedule change
It's been known for some time.

Personally, I think it's so the US has more chance of leading the medal tally from Day One. Their broadcaster won't have to shuffle the table (eg ranking by total medals instead of gold) as they have done in recent years so that the US is always on top.

Once the Indianapolis - Lucas Oil Stadium - drop in pool was so successful for their Paris swim trials and produced world record crowds of over 22,000, then the drop in pool at La Defense indoor arena in Paris where they play rugby was equally as successful, the yanks were going to switch to the Hollywood Park / SoFi stadium where the plan was always to have only the opening ceremony and closing ceremony and athletics at LA Memorial Coliseum.

So if you have the opening ceremony, you wont have a pool and practice pool ready for the next day at SoFi. They can sell an extra 20,000 seats per session - both morning and night, compared to the original venue and the LA and California government has very little involvement in helping balance the books. The change of venue is expected to increase ticket sales by $150mil.

If you look at gold medals won by US swim teams and athletics teams this century, the swim team is ahead by a nice gap. Same with total medals in the two sports. The yanks like to count by total medals ranking ahead of gold medal ranking. There are 6 more swimming events in LA - all the 50m events which yanks could win 3 or 4 of them and probably 10 medals in total over those 6 events. So that is another reason to keep swimming first before athletics.

Sure there is no Phelps to help out like between 2004-2016 games but the swap is about $$$ not NBC wanting more US gold early. Anyway the yanks usually hit the lead in gold medals ranking, let alone total medals, by day 3 or 4, and that wont change with a home Olympics and swapping the time table between athletics and swimming.

Happened to catch Reece Holder's 400m just before I went to bed very early this morning. He dominated, was in lane 8 way out in front and the pommie caller completely missed him until 50m to go.

If Reece keeps improving he could make the 400m final in Tokyo. Will be a big part of the Aussie assault to win a medal in the mixed 4x400m relay.

Another great Diamond League meet after similar quality in the last 2 at Monaco and Eugene. Plus the poms having an arvo meet rather than evening meet, meant it was easier to watch at a late evening start rather than a bloody 3am start.

A lot of Aussies did well with several PBs - see tweets below.

Disappointing 1500m for Cam Meyers, was in a good position to challenge but Brit Mills was in 4th placed with 200 to go, fell over and Meyers was right behind him and went down as well. But 18 year old Kenyan Phaneul Koech won again in a 3.28 beating a high quality field.

If he continues to improve and has a 10-12-15 year career, which isn't always guaranteed with Kenyan prodigies, I reckon he will eventually break El Guerrouj's WR 3:26:00.

The World Aquatics Championships started on 11th July.

The group stages of Water Polo started on the 11th, artistic swimming started on Saturday and 3 of the 11 events are finished and the Open Water swimming 7 events 3 men's, 3 women's and a mixed relay have been swum and won.

Aussie Moesha Johnson who won silver in the Paris 10km open water swim in the dodgy Seine River won bronze in the 3km knockout sprint event and double gold in the 5km and 10 km events.

Aussie Kyle Lee won bronze in the men's 10km open water event.

German Florian Wellbrock who won gold in 10km swim in Tokyo 10km open water and bronze in Tokyo 1500m in the pool, but missed the final in Paris, has won a ton of open water swimming medals at world champs plus several different coloured medals in pool won 4 gold medals in the open water swimming. He won the 3km knockout sprint event as well as the5km and 10 km events, and the team relay for Germany.

In the Water Polo Oz men lost all 3 group stage games and then played in 13-16th placings game, won them both and finished 13th. A disappointing result after Paris as they advanced to the knockout stage and lost in a penalty shoot out in the 1/4 finals to eventual bronze medallist USA. They finished 7th after the 5-8th placings games.

The women won their division and went straight to the quarter final, but lost 7-8 to Greece. They now have games in the 5-8th placings bracket.

9 Now has live broadcasts as well as full replays of the Water Polo and daily highlights which I checked on Saturday arvo and this evening.

The Pool stuff starts next Sunday 27th.

Since 2017 The FIBA Women's Oceania and Asian Championships have been combined, called the FIBA Women's Asia Cup and the top 4 teams starting with 2018 World Cup and then 2020 Olympics go thru to those tournaments.

To give the small pacific nations and middle eastern nations a go, they have a B tournament and the winner from the previous Asia Cup then qualifies joining the host nation and 6 others for the "A grade" championships.

Sunday night Oz beat Japan 88-79 in Shenzhen to win the Asia Cup for the first time.

Previous results
2017 Silver lost to Japan - won Silver at 2018 World Cup in Spain lost final to USA
2019 Bronze - knocked out by USA in 1/4 finals at 2021 Tokyo Olympics
2021 Bronze held after Olympics - Oz hosted the 2022 World Cup in Sydney and won Bronze after lost SF to China
2023 Bronze - held in Sydney - won Bronze next year at 2024 Paris Olympics

Australia opened it's medal count at the World Student Games overnight.

Young Georgia Harris won the 100m.

Tonight two better sprinters - Kristie Edwards & Jess Milat will run in the 200m heats. Aiden Murphy & Chris Ius also in the men's event.

Good thing about the next few days is that there will be a morning session which will start broadcasting at the more Aussie-friendly time of 6pm AEST.

Sam Short trying to make a statement after the Paris nightmare.

Sensational swim, qualified fastest in 400m freestyle. Hopefully didn’t burn too much energy because he looked powerful. Elijah Winnington had an absolute shocker and did not qualify, 10th fastest.

Great swim by Sam Short in 400m but just missed beating Martens by 2/100's of a second. Kim from Korea was close behind them and was 0.25 behind Martens.

Sam was in front at 150m thru to 350m turns - last one just 0.06. I thought he out touched Martens but that might have just been the camera angle. Martens was pretty pumped after the win. Thorpey said more so than after winning in Paris.

Summer McIntosh wins 400m in a 3.56 - the first of many here at Singapore. Has the 200m IM SF soon doesn't even celebrate and off to warm down to get ready for semi.

Pallister was 2nd just behind of McIntosh for 1st 200m then Ledecky took over. Li Bingjie came from nowhere in the last 50m and took 3rd. She won bronze in Tokyo behind Titmus and Ledecky.

That is the 5th fastest time by a woman for 400m. McIntosh has 1st, 4th and 5th fastest times and Titmus 2nd and 3rd.

Unbelievable effort by 4x100m girls to beat the more experienced US team. That anchor leg by Olivia Wunsch to swim down Torri Huske, after Huske go to the 50m in front, over the last 25m was special.

Fantastic swim by the Aussie men in the 4x100m to win. Finally at a world champs on Olympics a relay team gives Chalmers a decent chance to win and he swims over the top of yanks and Italians in a 46.5 to win gold.

3.08.97 is equal 3rd fastest time in history. First time 3 Oz swimmers have done a 47 second swim and anchor a 46.

Fastest 9 times before tonight. Oz's 3.09.81 in Beijing 2008 Olympics in super suit era was #10 and the Oz record.

Summary of Day 1 finals

12 year old Yu Zidj of China, put up a time of 2:10.22 to earn the 7th seed for the women’s 200m IM final on Monday night. If she medals she will be the youngest person since 1936 to medal at an Olympics or World Champs.

acute gastroenteritis has gone thru the USA swim team and several swimmers have pulled out of events

Although some overall performance impact was expected following the initial news on July 22, many were still shocked when multiple swimmers withdrew from events on day one of competition. Reigning Olympic champion Torri Huske withdrew from the 100 butterfly, Claire Weinstein pulled out of the 400 freestyle, and Gretchen Walsh dropped out of the 4×100 freestyle relay just minutes after finishing the 100 fly semifinal, where she had qualified for the final in a tie for first place.

It is important to note that teams are not allowed to change their relay lineup once a finals session has started. The fact that Walsh’s withdrawal was approved strongly indicates a health-related reason.
