I am literally ****ting myself and feeling sorry for whoever has to take this kid on next year and when he beefs up even more.

He made sam look so small.
Good luck with him for the next 15+ years, he will be a star from what i've heard and seen tonight on TFS

Lol, TFS made the expectations on him even higher.

But yeah, he is massive.

I liked JB's comment about tom eating his children

Talk about pressure... The poor kid must be stressing.

He'll play about 5 games next year maximum.

Give the kid a friggen break.
5 games? your kidding... the guy, yes guy not kid, will be a superstar next year... dont worry too much about additional weights get him on the track and running... get him throwing up, if he can improve his engine, the strength is already there! In addition to that he seems like he could put on muscle mass by tieing his shoelaces!

would look better in a carlton jumper... :p

You are kidding, right?

He is not the savior everyone thinks. Like everyone, i beleive he will be a super player, but will be a super player in 3-4 years. He is very raw like Nathan Ablett and will take time.

If they throw him in too soon, the mature AFL bodies will man-handle him and reduce his confidence, with saying that, if he is dominating the VFL, send him to the big boys but i don't beleive the football world should be expecting too much of him in season 2007.

Maybe 5 senior games, 5 Goals, a few BOG performances in the VFL and 1-2 bags of 4+ goals in the VFL. Anything more, BRILLIANT. I know i won't be expecting more.

I just can't wait for 2009 when Nathan & Tom tear games apart by kicking 10+ between them a game!

Hard to predict just what he'll achieve next year, I guess conventional wisdom would suggest he'll need a season or two before he's a regular member of the team, but there are always exceptions to that rule, and hopefully he may be one of them, a kid by the name of Kenny Newland forced his way into the senior team at the age of sixteen, and was a star from the very beginning.

He can give Ablett some weight training advice. Then we would have two huge tanks.

However, with our stupid Midfield we wont be seeing much of them at full potential.

Relax, Varcoe/Stokes/Prismall/Gamble are on the rise. Add them to Bartel and you will have a fair cracking midfield at about the same time as the Ablett/Hawkins freakshow starts to hit high gear.

We're Geelong supporters mate...never get our hopes up :)

i'm predicting that if he lines up in round one and kicks 3+ goals, then the Addy will spearhead a campaign to have Hawkins made captain-coach as well as erecting a 30ft tall bronze statue in his honour at Kardinia Park

There is some sense in this article

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,20160989%255E5004902,00.html

so dont jump the gun and expect him to fire in his 1st season (if he does it is just a big bonus). Ottens, mooney and nablett can do the job next year with hawkins coming in for a few games here and there.

The article has a point but you have to remember it was written by Dermott "oh, no, someone's getting more attention than me" Brereton. He almost writes the kid off.

"He is too short to play in the ruck, and too immobile to play at centre half-forward, although an AFL pre-season will benefit his mediocre endurance status"

Something I wrote in another thread. Still applies.

And whilst we're on young Tom. Don't let's put too much pressure on him. He's coming from schoolboy footy, where his size and strength gave him a huge advantage, to elite footy. I wouldn't be surprised if he spends quite a bit of time in the 2s next year. I can remember all the hoo-ha when Nathan arrived and it was only in the last few weeks of this season that he showed us a glimpse of what he can do. Tom is an exceptional talent but, as I said earlier, he's coming from schoolboy footy to elite footy so don't expect too much too soon.

Yeah I was more looking at the bits saying it may take a couple of years and dont expect an immediate impact.

Too short to ruck?? he is taller than some of the ruckmen running around so might become a 3rd or 4th option (maybe when he bulks up more can do the forward rucking if ottens is in the middle - barry hall style).

And he is either taller or with in a couple of centimeters of the following "ruckmen" (didn't go through all the sides but a few of them) and while blake has probably been called undersize then rest their height hasn't been an issue (except when up against sandilands :P)

Mark Blake - 199cm
Trent West - 198cm
Meesen - 199cm
Maric - 198cm
Ben Hudson - 199cm
Rhett Biglands - 198cm
Clark Keating - 197cm
Dylan Mclaren - 194cm
Cameron Cloke - 195cm
Cain Ackland - 196cm
Jason Blake - 189cm
Barry Brooks - 198cm
Justin Koschitzke - 197cm
Michael Rix - 198cm

of course I dont expect him to play in the ruck except as I said before as a 3rd or 4th option as we have ottens, king, mooney, blake to go already

Yeah because there is nothing like middle and long distance running to make someone a rocket. Hawkins should not stop until he is as fast as Ling.

Meanwhile, I think we should hire chelsworthgale as our new fitness coach. He is clearly an expert.

There's a fence post outside Skilled Stadium that is as fast as Ling. He might need to include actual movement in the skills required.

A preseason of brutal levels of cardio training will do wonders for Tom without any doubt.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment, just some of the comments were a little ungracious. Bit of the green-eyed monster coming out.

I don't expect much more that a few appearances and if he looks better at the end of the year than the start - that's all I expect from any first year player

But it's not necessarily just Geelong supporters with the hype, the media have been all over him like a rash.

Exactly.

Interesting though he didn't look too stressed last night - seems pretty level headed although next year will make things a lot clearer.

I think the footy club will move him along at the right pace so really the weight of expectation is with the supporters not with the kid.

He is certainly the best forward prospect we have had since the great man. We should just be pleased we have had a bonus rnd one pick - and when he is ready - he is ready.

He did look f##ken big though!

I think he'll be a superstar but geez i hope people dont put too much pressure on him. There is no way hes played anywhere near the level of AFL and should not be expected to be a gun in his first year of football. Good luck to him though, hopefully the expectation doesnt get to him, or that he can handle it somehow
