One thing you want changed in the AFL.

For me it's the umpires microphones to be switched off during the play.

The game is going along nicely and player A punches the ball from player B's grasp and you think that was a great play there. Next minute the whistle is blown and the umpire awards Player A the free kick, ok you say fair enough. Then the umpire decides to argue with the player telling him he hit his arms and to stand on the mark, don't go forward, you hit his arms etc.

Seriously just shut up already.
don't even get me started on the play on a thousand times.


I don't want to hear them.
I don't go to the footy to hear them, I don't watch it on the tele to hear them, I don't pay to be a member to hear them.
Turn off the umps mics.

I don't mind hearing the umps, at least you get to hear their explanation for the free kick instead of sitting there thinking "wtf was that for??"

I just want them to stop bringing in new rules every damn year! The game was great as it was 15 years ago, it doesn't need to evolve every single year with new rules. Even the umps can't keep up with all the rule changes as we're seeing now with incorrect calls being made and admitted to.

Players delaying their opponents taking frees/marks by struggling to get up/get out of their way/etc.

It's a 50 if the ump thinks you didn't return the ball quickly enough, but you can keep 'accidentally' get tangled up for far longer and nothing happens.

Start giving 50s for that and I imagine the players would suddenly find themselves able to stand up, or at least roll out of the way far more quickly.

Remove the high fend off ‘front in contact’ rules. They both reward the wrong things.

Drop the handicapped fixture - that is bullshit. Even with an uneven fixture (18 teams, 22 rounds) you should still STRIVE for equality or draw, not deliberately handicap teams. The draft already does this - it’s flat out wrong to handicap the good sides in the fixturing as well as at the draft table.

MRP should be an event where the fans vote on the outcome. If there’s a part of the game that can and should be open to public involvement that’s it.

This would probably the only way North would be able to attract a decent existing player...Although if they replaced the club (and with odd numbers, you'd expect they would) you'd probably still miss out.

Less employees at AFL house. Honestly reckon they get bored and that’s why so many stupid changes happen. Like the songs. One club asks if they can get one word changed, and they take the opportunity to redo the entirety of 16 songs. And only the original club that asks for it uses the new one (and with any luck for not much longer)

They can always go back to hear what the ump said on the replay if the decision was unclear, no reason we have to hear their running commentary for the whole game - never mind their huffing and puffing

Interestingly, when I went to the Swans/Power match a couple of weeks ago, I noticed for the first time that explanations for each free kick came up on the big screens below the actual camera footage of the game. It made sitting next to my mum INFINITELY less frustrating. She loves the sport, but she really doesn't have much of a clue.

To follow on from this. For the media/journalists not to rely on the AFL for the handouts and goodwill. If the AFL want to be seen as a mature organisation then it should follow that they can accept criticism from journos without blacklisting them

The media are so reliant on the AFL that any criticism is muted

Let cheer squads use the cut up and streamer stuff which added colour back in the day
Half time get the mini leaguers to kick footies into the crowd..kids love that stuff
Express entry into pubs and clubs if you have footy gear on and free public transport
Make sure umpires umpire every game like they do Grand Finals and let it go and only pay the obvious
Give the majority of GF tickets to the members of the competing sides and not corporates
Stop crying when there is strippers in private boxes on GF day...rather encourage it
