Hey everyone,

I'm a fourth year honours student at Swinburne Uni in Melbourne and was wondering if you had 5 MIN of your time to answer 13 yes/no Questions.

It's really simple i'm just trying to get some feedback as to who knows or doesn't know a lot about online gaming addictions. I would really appreciate it if you could.

Thanks in advance.

I was addicted to an online game called Worms 2.

It was SERIOUS!

I'd get up at 4am, get ready for school by 4:30 and then play worms2 online until it was time for school..

I used to train for it offline...

I played that game for probably about 3-4 years on and off..

I was also addicted to Team Fortress Classic. An online version of Half Life. But not as much.

I've completely moved away from computer game addiction over the last 3 years and don't play any games anymore. But I know if I was to buy myself an XBOX 360 and some games and that, it'd happen all over again.

....Now I have an online forum addiction...

Thanks for your response superfraser.

It's interesting that you mention your story, every testimony that i read usually ends up the the same. Did the gaming affect your schooling? Like your results etc?

I've read about people that lose partners, jobs, friends due to excessive gaming.

I've read about people that lose partners, jobs, friends due to excessive gaming.

It affected my social life and my school results.

Especially over the summer holidays.

School friends would call me up "Lets play cricket.." I'd lie and say I wasn't allowed to play so I could stay home and play computer games.

...I still don't like cricket though :)

I don't know what its like for the MMORPG and what have you.

But the thing that got me with Worms especially, was this highly active tight knit community of people, not unlike the bigfooty forums.

You'd get to know many people, and actually feel some type of commitment to turning up each day.

But once I hit 18, it started waning, drinking and meeting girls that was alot of the reason I gave it all away...

I think by 21 I had completely stopped playing all computer games except in social environments.

I had an xbox sitting in my room for a couple of years which i'd only used to watch DVDs on.

And I have no interest in buying one of the new generation consoles.

But as I suggested earlier, the addiction has shifted.

Myspace/Bigfooty kind of thing have taken over.

.....Is it addiction or is it entertainment? I don't know.

Are people addicted to television?

Cheers superfraser you have been real insightful on the subject appreciate your comments.

It's an interesting point you bring up. Where do you draw the line between entertainment and addiction? Anything can be addictive but it's the negative consequences as a result of the addiction that make it significant.

I think there are both positive and negatives to online overuse and addiction. The more extreme cases are usually negative but for some people, like you have mentioned it's being part of another community. Sense of belonging. The flip side to that you could argue is that you are then taking away your physical social life.

I myself am a keen gamer, i play console games online but i couldn't possibly sustain my lifestyle if i played it any more than i did (which is only about 2-3 hours a week).

So i guess i would just like people to be more aware that it is an issue that is becoming more pertinent throughout society and hopefully hit the nail on the head before there are widespread issues.

i was addicted to ultima online for about 4 years. looking back i cant believe how many hours of my life i wasted... i did the survey :thumbsu:

"Computer games don't affect kids. I mean if Pacman affected our generation as kids,
we'd all be running around in a darkened room, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. "

Used to be a WoW addict. So I'll do it later.

Just did it.

I haven't touched MMOs since last Feb. Though with Age of Conan coming out soon, and my puppy-like enthusiasm of it... it may be another long haul.

Done.

I'm currently addicted to playing Team Fortress 2 online...:o

Thanks to everyone above for completing it, you have helped immensely :thumbsu:

Done.

I liked the question where it asks you what experiences you get from MMOs that you cannot IRL. Abusing people and getting away with it is one of them. ;)

Thank you Thrawn.

You're certainly not the first person mention that.
