Aker got a bad wrap because he spoke his mind and questioned the game at times, afl doesn't like that probably why his image isn't the greatest.

But carry on let's listen to current players saying "the boys did wel so brave courage for a good cause we are up and about week at a time we know they were going to be tough we need to give 100% ill talk contract end of year so brave"
So there are only two types of response to an interviewer's question. To be bland, boring and 'tow the club line' on the one hand, or a complete flog on the other? Nothing in between?

Aker's selfish behaviour led him to be sacked by two footy clubs. Might have been a decent player, but that is no substitute for character, his comments about about gay footy players and Jim Stynes (only a day or so after he passed away) were disgusting and unnecessary

In short, I think he is an arrogant, vain and self-absorbed plonker.

This is one of the best Open Mikes I agree. The Robert Walls one is pretty good too, as is the Sam Newman.

I've never really had too much of a problem with Akermanis. Some of the things he's done are indefensible (like the Jim Stynes remark) but the gay article is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. In an industry full of soft voiced fence sitters like Harley, Richardson, Ling and Darcy - it's refreshing to here from someone with strong opinions. Akermanis would fit in nicely into the American sporting culture which some people may not like but I do, but in Australia we're so precious about people treading on anyone's toes for some reason. Like when Ablett called Crowley a joke on twitter. I love stuff like that (got nothing against Crowley).

Had a lot of time for Aker the footballer. Had virtually none for Aker the person.;)

And then not really being welcome around the club because he was uncomfortable with the idea of having to share a locker room and shower with them and they'd be disruptive because they were thinking about the guys not focussing on the task etc etc...

Paraphrasing off a dodgy memory here.... Try Google....
Are you sure?

I thought it was along the lines of, if they came out, that fans and the environment of football may not respond well. Which is fair enough. Given some of the opinions expressed here, media insensitivity from the boofheads and the way hecklers behave at games.

I don't agree, but I understand that POV. You would also have to be emotionally strong, because fan abuse and the online response could be intense.

You serious?

That's exactly my point. Everything was someone else's fault with him.

It was brisbane and Leigh's fault he was run out of there, even though he'd been a disruptive influence for years and broadcast private team info.

Then at the dogs it was Gia's fault he was sacked, again after shooting off at the mouth continually.

I'm sorry. That many respected people can't be wrong. Having "courage" to speak your mind isn't worth a pinch of shit when your opinions are lies and inflammatory garbage.
But his position re the WB was 100% correct. Leading teams is a crock of shit. The Bulldogs leadership group was awful and Smorgan has not turned the club around.

For all the romance, how do the likes of Darcy, West, Johnson, Gia and Murphy stack up against Brisbane luminaries.

At least Acker is trying to take responsibility, as opposed to the scapegoat ism some of these supposed leaders or former leaders subjected him to.

I don't know why the Dogs recruited him in the first place, it's not like he subsequently acted out of character, They couldn't even handle him doing a bloody handstand
Smacks of Darcy.

Bully boy obsessed with superficialities and he may not have still been at the club, but he brought leading teams there and his ideas still lingered. Resilience beats hypersensitivity. It's not about being perfect, it's about coping and overcoming hurdles in your path

Great interview. Learnt a bit too.
Aker was the single player who mastered the basic skills in footy better than anyone else I have seen. His one legacy should be that every Auskicker should be shown a dvd of his brilliance and consistent ability to make a football do what every AFL coach could only dream of - especially when you notice the amount of draftees at the highest level who are incredibly handicapped by the inability to use their non-preferred foot/hand.
The PC police were always there to get him for every little detail but they can never take away the fact that he was one of the more remarkable footballers ever to play the game IMO.

Easy to say when it's not you're team he's undermining with his comments and attitude. That's exactly what he did to the bulldogs in the end, thought he was bigger than the team.

He had a pretty damn good leadership group to compare it to. Which was his point, and his perspective to judge the bulldogs culture.

I'm not sure I ever heard of aker being a liar? Sounds like people who hate him trying to justify and twist who he is and what he did.

I agree this Open Mike is one of my favourites.

You might not like Leading teams but they worked with several of the teams who became premiers in the last decade.( Swans, Geelong, Pies-not a bad record that is about 6 flags and 7 if Swans win this year)
Aker 's idea of taking responsibility seems to be slagging everyone off, not manning up and not helping out around the place? Of course those guys don't stack up against the Brissy stars who had an exceptional team put together with a great deal of assistance from the AFL, whereas Footscray is up against it.
Its all about Aker.
I would also suggest that if you have people of the calibre of Johnson, Gia, Murphy that you are in pretty good company.
