Great interview with Bazza as always. He's a changed man and liking him as a commentator on Fox Footy.

Melbourne great David Schwarz is the guest on Open Mike next Monday.

I actually want Mike to focus on players from the 60's,70's and 80's.

And the odd interview with an administrator would go down well.

Wayne Jackson - has that happened?

Nope. I don't think he's chatted to Allen Aylett or Ross Oakley either.

Diversity of experience is the key to the series. It's the guys who have been involved in the game in more than one role (player, coach, commentator, administrator, agent) who have the most to say.

When i heard it was schwarz i thought ohh woopie doo. But that was one of the good ones, i guess cos he has all the gambling and knee injuries etc, but i just felt that was a real engaging one.

I find this show does make you go from thinking certain players are nob heads in a fan sense to they are good blokes, never been much of a schwarz fan, but i find him very likeable ( tho was a prick on a school visit)

Anthony Stephens?

I havn't ever seen much of him write about all the Carey shit.

I never liked David Schwarz. In 1998 he visited my school, and I was horrified by the level of arrogance and apathy on display. I remember saying to my mates something like "why's he here if he's not going to inspire kids, be enthusiastic, or even engage with us as aspiring, or wannabe footballers?"

He won't care - in fact, it's only relevant to me. But after watching Open Mike tonight, I've forgiven him. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't an all-harbouring grudge. It was just "man that guys a douchebag" every time I saw him on tv or heard him on radio.

As someone who has battled my own demons - although nothing that severe as his - it all makes sense to me now, and I do a complete 180 degree turn on it. I think of how hard it must've been to be doing PR activities like this, and I wonder how Melbourne a) never did anything to help him, and b) sent him on these clinics when he was likely to be a particularly prickly character most days.

I loved this Open Mike, because maybe it will have helped some people on the precipice of addiction - any addiction - to have an epiphany.

I dunno - people will have differing opinions on this. Smoking addiction is expensive, harmful to health, and probably affects a lot of families. Alcohol addiction is very expensive, harmful to health, and absolutely affects a lot of families and their welfare.

But to me, gambling addiction probably sits just below serious drug addiction as the worst. Because it is all-encompassing in terms of expense - you will bet everything you have, and then some. And it will absolutely ruin your family because with addiction (as Schwarz said) families so rarely see the "sickness" element of it and many see it as the addict seeking their thrills and deciding that the punt is more important than their family. And it will devastate your mental health.

Kicked people out when he visited our school cos someone asked a question about gary lyon, was a real dick, but im with you tonight changed my views of him

Mentioning how his son relates too footy based on odds and stuff is something that has become so common in society, i get exactly what he means.

On a side note melbourne must of overpaid him a bit

Tony Modra would be a great one. The superstardom. Coping with his knee reco and missing two flags. Falling out and leaving Adelaide. Time at Freo. What he's up to now.

I'd love to watch one of Mods! Would be so good! :D

Also, The_Wookie, do you have the Mark Ricciuto episode of Open Mike?

It's probably one that could've gone an hour tonight - I would've liked to have heard more about his thoughts in the increased use of live odds on tv, about the stalker, about the collapse live on channel 7.

I know there's a lot to be said in showbiz about "leave them wanting more" - but Sheehan is the best interviewer on tv. Not in footy, not on foxtel - but on television. This show needs to go for an hour!

Agreed. And wasn't it just cute to have GAMBLING ads all through the show? Really liked his comment that the AFL are drunk on gambling revenue. So absolutely true.

If there was any kind of conscience in football (and there isn't, they just pretend there is), gambling advertising would be stopped 100% tomorrow. And should be. But, in tune with the hypocrisy that is ubiquitous in sport in this country, it'll be around for a long time yet.

Great interview, glad he got to finish off at the dogs, deserved to go out on his terms, will always love bazza
The thing is he actually went out in great form. He couldve played on for at least another year.

Obviously don't know much about the man... his been through a hell of a lot!
It's not This Is Your Life. When football identities are being interviewed I would rather hear about footy related tales, preferably from football identities who actually achieved something in football.

EDIT: I should add that I haven't seen the Schwarz one yet, and I've got nothing against the bloke, but there are other people in football I would rather see interviewed on this show before Schwarz, and this thread is full of good suggestions.
