So how do we get our hands on some decent picks in the 2018 draft now that we basically have no picks in the first few rounds ?

Is there any players with the go home factor left ? Anyone tradable worth a second/third round pick?
With a few guys that probably will retire like Sandilands and Johnson and to the lesser extent mundy how do we wheel and deal back into a quality position in next years draft ?

Next year I suggest trading our first pick for some second rounders, like WC did. 2 years into a 4 year plan, we should have our 22 set more or less complete and just need to work on depth. Steal all the best mature age talent in next year's pool to have as depth. They might not be the guns we could get with an early pick, but they'll be good enough to cover in case of some injuries. Also try and get O'Reilly and Carter. Probably looking a bit too far ahead but that's what I suggest.

Langdon is the only one I can see requesting a trade home rn and I can't see him having more value then Crozier, so would expect the same compo, about pick 40. Maybe even a bit later given how this is apparently a deeper draft.

I don't want to trade more future picks because it seems we are getting sucked into a loop of constantly trading future picks.

Why trade for picks?
We will use The pick after our first pick which is pick 7435 about rnd 72 to get Carter.

I strongly Believe it is a strategy.

Even if we have to use points in 2019 it will be marginal as Carter isn't a first rnd pick.

The "super draft" is fine but if we are still rebuilding and should get top 5 again in 2019 (which I'm fine with) why bother getting more picks when we get another elite player as well as Carter if we are looking to start playing finals in 2019/20.

We still need to maintain a quality list. 2 picks after the retiring older experienced players isn’t keeping the list in a good position. We need a few guys to help build the list we are after. If we get a bad run with injuries we would be back to square one.

I think Carter will go late. Being an indigenous kid from our Academy places significant perceived risk factor on him. In reality he sounds like an outstanding kid, but it will have an impact. In addition he has had a knee injury.

The other thing is other clubs have their Academies coming along too and won’t want cross bidding for players unless they are great value.

Our first pick hopefully gets us one of Hill or O’Reilly.

Freo will probably have a top 10 pick unless we improve significantly next season. If a club bids on Carter, Freo can match that bid with their following draft pick even if it costs them a huge amount of points. It's no big deal because they don't have any other academy players for the 2018 draft.

I don't get the offloading of some of our young players for draft picks such as Langdon, Tucker or Hughes unless they want to leave the club. They are young guys who Freo want to develop into top line players. You need to draft out fringe players otherwise your rebuild will take longer unless there's an offer you can't resist ala Weller for pick 2.

I believe we actually have two academy players next year. I've just never heard anything said about the other kid so I assumed he wasn't much chop.

Jason Carter and Thomas Medhat.

Thanks yes same I was unaware. I wonder what Thomas is like and wheather teams will bid on him?

I'll watch both he and Carter next season with interest

If we stay injury free, I’ld expect us to start moving up the ladder next year. Finals? Maybe? 10-13th, probably. That should still land us a really good player with our first rounder next year.

Our B22 is looking pretty good already, with the addition of 2&5 this year, and a top 10 next year still to come. And Carter.

I wouldn’t be against trading our 2019 2nd or 3rd rounder for a corresponding one in 2018. I would expect us to be making finals in 2019, so hopefully can get a deal done where the club we trade with thinks we’ll still be bottom 10. Maybe we could trade 2019 2nd round for two 2018 3rds, or a 2nd + 4th with a team higher up.

Otherwise it’ll be guys like Tommy Gun and Sutty that will be leaving. Would we even get anything or just go as DFA.

Anyway, let’s just get thru this draft first! We don’t know who Lloyd and Bondy have lined up to “return home” for us next year yet either. I suspect we won’t be needing many draft picks for 2018, hence they flogged them off.

Just go into points debt in 2019 for Carter.

If we finish down the bottom in 2019 we deserve to suck, fold the club, no way that should be happening.

Live trading will be useful in that if we have a pick around 8-10 and all the kids we want are gone, we can trade back for a few spares.

Alternatively if we have a large list turnover then trading 2019 for 2018 picks is an option - soon we will hit a point where the list is relatively settled and it is more about adding depth in specific areas than having to take multiple picks in the 2nd and 3rd.

Is anyone on here familiar with the live draft system that’s used in US sports? Is this for swapping contracted players or just picks? Or is it for swapping players once they have been drafted (or nominated) by a club?
During the drafts it’s just picks but during the year pretty much all sports in the u.s have a endless player trade period. Will be interesting to see if the afl heads that route down the track

We will and should keep our 2019 first round pick. I would (and the club has three consecutive years of form) trade our 2019 2nd round pick.

Either swap that for a pick 28-36 in 2018 2nd round. There will be a club with F/S or Academy kids in 2019 keen on a early to mid 2nd round pick. Also with all the pick swaps for 2018 draft there are clubs with multiple 3rd rounders so we could swap 2019 2nd round pick for two third round picks (for eg. 43 & 48).

Then say we finish 11th with a couple more wins then we would go to the ND with:

8, 43, 48, 80

Say a club with pick 26 (729pts) bids on Carter, with our 20% discount reduces to 583.

Pick 43 + Pick 48 = 680
Pick 28 = 677

Leaving 97pts (pick 64)

In effect:
8 (Hill) 26 (Carter), 64, 80 (this pick will likely move forward a little, depending on number of Academy picks and club list numbers).

I wholeheartedly agree but that is a BIG if.

Our B22 is pretty darn good but geez the slope off the other side is terrifying. Once Sutty, Subes and D Pearce start getting games along with 5-6 guys with less than 50 games we look pretty shabby.

I expect us to trade our 2019 away (except first round) to get back into 2018. By the end of 2018 we should have almost completely turned over the list with only 1 or 2 stragglers still left. Bulk picks shouldn't be as much of a problem in 2019 like it is this year and next. I'd expect all the retirements bar maybe Mundy to be done next year so it will be down to how many of Sutty, Sherro and Subes are left in terms of list turnover.

Have you heard of Medhat?
Are you talking Tom Medhat? If so, yes I've heard of him but haven't seen him play. Medhat is in West Perth's zone and there isn't a lot of quality in that zone as far as Next Gen is concerned so most of my time is spent in the South/East and Peel areas because you get more bang for your buck so to speak in the form of the Walkers, Haddow, Manfred Kelly etc...Claremont is also good for Next Gen.

Found a bit of write up about him here, maybe due to him being bottom age. With next year 5th round pick , I will take him
http://footyprophet.com/wafl-colts-wrap-round-18/

However, it was a victory which saw the Falcons narrow the gap to fifth placed Subiaco to just four points and they also have a game in hand. It was also a performance full of merit as two of their stars Oscar Allen and Connor West were promoted to the reserves. That allowed some other players to take the limelight and Jamie Dowen (21 possessions, four tackles) and Thomas Medhat (17 possessions, nine tackles, six inside 50s) led the way. Like they have been formthe majority of the season, Perth were served best by Luke English who had 30 possessions, 12 tackles and three inside 50s.

Get O'Reilly with our first and then go speculative with 4th and following. Carter with our last.
Start hiding some gems at peel ?? Smash the wa boys wanting to go home.
Free agent thing has not worked for us but can try again. Law if odds says we are due for a win.

We can nominate him for the rookie list (that is if were even remotely interested). If he goes through undrafted in the ND we get him without any issues with our final rookie pick. We were going to do that with Ryan Lester-Smith a few years back but just before the rookie draft we pulled out.

Yes it is a shame we don’t have our third round pick for 2018 but I have good faith that steel balls Lloyd will find a way to get a few third round picks this time next year.

I think other than trading in some draft picks we will be a non-player in the trade period next year and have articles written about us not getting too involved like the Pies and Kangaroos this year.

I sort of wish we didn't trade our 2018 3rd rounder.

If Freo finish 15th, we would have picks 4 and 40 and trade that to the 9th placed tea that has picks 10, 28 and 46 as a suggestion.
GC really stuff up with their trade dealing with ablett and Weller at the last minute and go ahead with eagles trade without asking Freo whether eagles future first round is enough for Freo .
