Happened to a small extent in the Hawthorn QF and majorly in the North Melbourne game on the weekend. Some of the cries from the crowd included 'weak dog' and 'softest player in the AFL' among others.

I'd like to know how anyone can think his weak or soft the way he goes in for the footy and usually has to get his head taped every week. As for the ducking rumor his quite simply the one who gets in lowest 9/10 and/or he rolls the shoulders, usually the tackler isn't strong enough to hold him and gets high contact. Thought it was very ironic when Swallow ran into I think it was Caddy(?) with his head down, had ample time to rise up but ran in head first trying to get a free kick. Was pinged for holding the ball.

That's my rant over, and for the record I think he has had an issue with ducking in the past but not since at least he became skipper. But the way one of the most courageous players in the comp/best leaders was getting booed for no apparent reason I thought was a disgrace.

Well, the booing can be seen as a "badge of honour" I suppose.

But when Hawks fans were doing it I just kept yelling out "Mitch Thorp".

The sad reality is a large chunk of football followers are simpletons and are easily lead by innuendo, rumour and unchecked alarmist nonsense. They are unable to use logic and reason to make sense of what is happening in front of them. The football media is a softened extension of this. They can't see past their own blind hatred to actually watch Selwood with an open mind. There's an almost superstitious attitude demonstrated by too many Australians when it comes to football. It's testament to Selwood's mental strength that he can shrug this stuff off. Even Bartel was moved to defend himself.

Well for mine he rarely ducks. Want to look at Ducking in a dangerious way , look at what Thompson did in the first quarter. Charge with head down.

The thing is , Im yet to see it have a negative affect , with his mindset it may actually fire him up.
To clarify I meant in his first 2/3 years he had a slight tendency (very slight) but has well and truly moved on

With all the crap that's been posted about him this weekend, you'd think he killed Bambi's mother, and followed that by clubbing some baby harp seals, yet he was the one on the RECEIVING end of a head-high hit.

Imagine if he wins the Brownlow- will go down with Dipper, Libber, Bartel, as least deserving and most unpopular going by current forum "standards"

Opposition supporters seem to think that it now ok to boo champions. Hawthorn started it and others catch on. Demonstrates to me that some of the integrity and dignity has gone at AFL level. I guess when the AFL turned it into entertainment for TV rights and $s it was always going to end this way.

That idiot Brereton started it all circa 2008-09 when he was calling for Triple M. I remember the first time i heard him talk about, very sheepishly saying how he draws the free better than most by "ducking" into the tackle. Was quick to say how he thinks Selwood's a champ etc but by then the damage was done. Then every other dimwit starts repeating the same line on talkback and other journo's start discussing it and thus we are where we are now. Everytime he gets a free its because he "ducks" and so it wasn't there and shouldn't have been paid blah blah blah. Nobody talks about how he gets a free kick a lot of the time because he's the first one on the ball in a contest putting he's body on the line.

Also Hawthorn people seem to be the worst for booing him and i think a lot of that has to do with the fact they missed him in the draft. Simple jealousy probably goes a long way to justifying why he gets boo'ed by "fans".

They can boo all they like as far as i'm concerned. It doesn't seem to have any impact on he's game. Infact it probably motivates him even more.

Who cares. The funny part is, Wayne Carey loves him. So does Lethal, Vossy and just about every other former player in the media.
He was voted most courageous player in the comp by his peers.
Why do you care what some arm chair, neandethal AFL consumer (I mean 'supporter') thinks? Most haven't even played the game.
As I have said previously, if Joel played for Gold Coast or Melbourne he would be loved - just like Gary Ablett - who was also most hated when he was at Geelong.
Notice how all the most hated players are champions?

According to North fans in the thread about the incident on the North board, Harvey will be safe for two reasons:

- He was only bracing for impact: must be a new technique they use at North. Who else braces for impact by jumping into it?
- He was only laying a shepherd: how nice of him to shepherd Selwood. Wouldn't want him to tackle Duncan who had the ball at the time, would we?

let's hope they are correct, and that Selwood is supportive, fwiw, NM will need every cm of Boomer to worry Swans.

Exactly - all started with Dermie and he has kept up a campaign and stirred Hawkers up and others have jumped on board.
Think Hawks started the booing of teams lining up for goal too-its happened interstate for awhile but they have brought it here. And now they are bringing the game-long booing of players. I don't mind a 5 minute boo, but for a whole game like Bartel-so rude.
Think we have to develop a chant, or cheer loudly whenever Selwood, Bartel get the ball, if this is how it is going to be. Graceless things they are.

Personally, I don't mind hearing a lot of booing of our players at games, as it generally means they're getting quite a bit of the footy. ;)

To a degree but now they are booing any touch, so you might have an ordinary game and till get lots of booing. And its pretty annoying at the ground I find. Sort of makes things a bit nasty, a bit aggro-when really its just a game of footy-relax everyone!

i can rationalise why opposition fans dislike selwood. i dont agree with it, but i can understand. if he played for hawthorn, you better believe most geelong fans would hate his knack for pulling high frees.

i dont think geelong fans as a whole really represent the ideal when it comes to unconditional respect for opposition players who are good footballers. we all have our own targets.

doesnt bother me one bit him getting booed, and trying to justify his high frees (which i think are justified, as its a tackle breaking technique and he always just goes on with it...) on here is: 1) preaching to the choir; and 2) a waste of time even if others were to read it.

dont let it get to you! just enjoy watching him play and captain our side year in, year out. remarkable player, and still a long way to go in his career.

universal respect of a team and its players just isnt going to happen. ever.

The fact they booed him 28 or so times was funny.

You have to be a great to get booed like he did.you never hear the opposition boo Travis Varcoe.

He's a legend and I'm sorry for those smears that boo him. Fantastic player who was astounding in that last game, fighting and giving his all, it was not for want of trying that he couldn't will you over the line.

Half of its envy. Mediocrity can recognise only itself, but talent can acknowledge Genius.

Do you think Selwood felt left out in the rnd 22 clash against the Hawks when the crowd was suddenly against Jimmy and he was the one getting boo'ed instead?
I had a laugh during the match at how Selwood seemed to be suddenly ignored but Jimmy couldn't get near the ball without the crowd going crazy.
