I thought Blakey and Ottens last week had poor games. We tossed a coin and went with Ottens. Blakey has had a good year for us. We weren’t going to play two of them with Podsiadly and Mooney,” he said.

“The pressure was on Ottens tonight to play well because we’ve got a good player ready as a back-up. We were pleased with Ottens’ game. He rucked well, followed up well and moved a lot better than he has.”

Right down near the bottom. Would anyone have thought Otto's form was bad enough to warrant being dropped? I still would have thought he was one of our most important players in September and was a bit shocked to read that...

Would need to be absolutely dreadful/carrying something to be behind Blake. Thankfully is neither. Tossed a coin my arse...

Yeah, when he first mentioned it on Channel 7 I actually thought he had stuffed up, and meant to say Hawkins instead. But I guess, if you think about it, his form hasn't been great. In fact, he hasn't really given us more than Blake for the last month or so.

Still, as SmothOperRaider said, I'd take Otto on one leg over Blake in a final.

He said it after the game and he meant it. No doubt about that.

It was something like
"Bomber, Ottens played well tonight"
"yes, but he'd want to or he is going out and Blake is coming in"

I didn't interpret it so literally when I watched the presser.

He was really trying to stress that competition for spots is intense at the moment and that every player needs to play well to keep their spot.

He was trying to send that message to both Blake and Ottens. Blake - don't give up. Ottens - don't slip up.

Brad Ottens played a brilliant game against the Dockers.

Gee, any local league ruckman will be licking their lips at the minute. Mark Blake has one major weakness. He cannot dominate the game via his around the ground work and he does not punish the opposition with his foot and hand disposal to position. Hence, a mobile local league ruckman can beat him in any contest.

Hence, Mark Blake should be traded to Essendon or another AFL club to give our Salary Cap some huge relief. He is just an average ruckman in a great AFL side.

The jury is still out and we have to beat Collingwood on Friday night.

Are we hungry for more premiership success?

Or, has satisfaction crept into the playing group?

There were times in the 3rd quarter where the players lost focus to allow Freo to score some goals. We cannot do this against Collingwood.

Finally, Mark Blake is just an average ruckman who will struggle in any local league competition.

THE GOVERNOR

It wasn't the presser, it was in the rooms straight after the game on 7.

I think Bomber is trying to rouse them from a bit mental slumber. Should have done it to Mackie weeks ago but with rests, suspensions and real injuries and the likes of Corey he probably has struggled to have the selections available to do it.

Ottens is not much different to Mackie. At time he shows enough to think he is only a bit away from his best. With Mackie its a lack of responsibility for his opponent , playing off his man etc. At his age and experience he should be doing it better than that.

With Ottens , its probably not so much mental , but one really is not sure if he's got the gear any more. Skilled for a big man , he has now come back to being an ordinary tall man. That he can even be threatened with removal by Blake is telling , he is not to far from the end. Can a bit prick to his pride get him up and about for this weeks game? Just like 4 years ago, he is crucial. He probably has never had a tough task. If Otten dominate against the Pies , allowing us to surge form the middle....we win.

If Ottens can somehow be BOG , it may just be the match of his career.

Too right, some people watch with bias and can't recognize Ottens has been a passenger until this Freo game, just waiting for him to find form, which thankfully he did. Up until this week, it would purely have been a tossup as to who has been more effective. Stats may confirm that. You may say I'm speaking as a Blake fan, but I can recognise Ottens' best far exceeds Blake's, but we just don't see it this year. Hopefully he has turned the corner and will hold his own against Jolly.

I did say during the week Ottens was lucky not to dropped.

Ottens is far too important important to the team and is an automatic selection. He maybe down a bit, but still a valuable contributor. Just Bomber's way of giving him a rev up, as well as trying to boost Blake's trade value.

Agree with both the above comments.

For the first time I think that Ottens looks a bit slow to me - and I would concede if he breaks even, rather than beat Jolly, I would be happy next week.

I don't know if he really would have dropped him (only Bomber himself knows) but the 'threat' is a good thing. Otto is miles better a player than Blake but he has been in poor form for at least a month, and Bomber knows if we are to beat the Pies, Otto needs to reprise some of his best form, not just in tap work, but in follow up, which is where he has looked sluggish this year. So to give him the threat of not playing is a good way to extract that out of him, and his follow up did seem to be much better on friday night, and he is the key if we are to win the game.

Our fate next week largely hinges on Ottens. The fear of losing is a much lesser incentive than the desperate hunger to win.

ottens is safe

Ottens may have been rucking against a cripple....but he played wella round the ground and presented well. There is so much more from him than his hit outs.....I wouldn't be surprised if Hawkins was dropped this week....I am a massive fan but his work rate is poor....he just won't run hard enough to the contest....

Ruck selection will be extremely interesting this week.
"To Hawkins or not to Hawkins is the question ? "
Apart from the obvious criteria of best for team there is the Jolly comment to deal with.
If we drop Tom maybe we are running scared and agreeing with Jolly ??
More psychological warfare to come.............
