Opinion Our Backline.

Any resurgence of the Carlton Football Club will be on the strength of our back-line.
Watching these guys at the ground has been an absolute treat, this year to date.
Always talking, instructing and assuring they set-up as per instruction at every call.

It won't always go smoothly but the work-rate when we haven't got the ball is first-class.
We shouldn't even care for a player getting out-marked, as the larger cause is to subscribe to the team-first defence that Bolton is preaching.

Had have we just got Plowman for Menzel alone, I would have been over the moon.
The thing with Plowman, Docherty, Weitering and Byrne, is that they don't lose focus at any point in time throughout the game. Watch them closely at the ground and this becomes apparent.
The added advantage is that these guys not only do the stopping job required of them, they launch many an attack and each can add 70 metres to their possession.

The job's not done yet but the aforementioned guys are 22 years of age or younger.
Won't take much now to complete the back-line puzzle and it may just be the start of bigger and better things for the CFC.

Noticed we actually missed Bryne today, fair few of Geelongs goals came from real pacy types Guthrie etc who i feel Bryne would have been able to match. Important that they all learn as much off Simmo as they can before he retires.

For what it will cost to get Marchbank id much rather spend it on a midfielder.

We dont need Marchbank right now...Rowe is doing a really good job minding the oppositions biggest and best forward and is good enough for the next year at least.

Whereas we desperately need some young gun midfield talent.

I'm certainly with you, though. We really need to bolster that midfield around Cripps with potentially elite youth.

Backline is working brilliantly with Simpson and Docherty directing traffic. Simmo is going to be such a hard man to replace when he eventually retires.

Our defence (our backline, and general defence all over the ground) is the reason we have done as well as we have. It's amazing to think our actual backline is still relatively undeveloped/raw - imagine when they have had a couple of seasons together.

I had the same thought & then gathered the post was tongue in cheek.

I remember looking at our 'back seven' when we played Richmond thinking that this group could become a force during the season. After round 10 the nucleus of that group is still producing great results. When you start restricting your opposition to less than 90 points in 6 or 7 of the ten you're giving yourself a great chance of winning the game. I can see some magic happening sooner than anticipated.

Probably one KPP short, though J GM is a good size

Marchbank has been spoken of a lot

They don't all have to be the same age group though. Rowe is a terrific gorilla for us right now. Not many players can wrestle Tomohawk.

Sheehan I still haven't given up on and Tuohy - both around 25-27

Potential adding Marchbank pick 6 at end of the year.
That's a lot of very high end talent that are all defenders.
Add them to Simmo the veteran and our two internationals Touhy and Byrne.
All we need is a future replacement for Sam Rowe and our defence is set.
