For the first time in a long long time I actually really like our backline. It seems well balanced, skilled and full of players who can both defend and attack. Rowe's improvement from a player who fumbled a lot and wasn't a great stopper to a strong and tall player with much surer hands has a lot to do with it as has getting Plowman. Simpson improving his defensive game to go with his already good attacking game, Docherty and Tuohy coming of age and getting Weitering have all really helped as has a solid more team based defensive structure and fitter more competitive midfield. Guys like White coming in and playing good footy gives is really good depth as does Byrne who really compliments that run and carry rebounding defence we have going. With Rowe playing like he is and Weitering we are actually not a key position player short just at the moment. Sheehan should provide us with greater medium sized defender depth as well. It's an area of the ground that we really have down pat which is great because I think we can really target forwards and mids with early picks now.

So ... no Marchbank for you

I'm comfortable with that outcome, but am equally happy with picking up a senior improvement from the state league, or giving Foster another chance.

There's a few more Marcus Adams types out there, no doubt, or we can just bring a kid in, or sign a DFA. I think it's both unfair to our list development and to White's career to not give him a crack at another club after this year.

Simon White IS a Marcus Adams type though...

And Foster hasnt really been anywhere near the required level...i get the feeling you are saying give him a chance simply because he is young, which is the wrong way to go about it.

His form is trending upwards, and Foster speaks highly enough of him (even with all the sugar coating of those reports). The fact that his foot skills are decent doesn't hurt either.

As for White vs. Adams, Adams has much better skills and athleticism, though they shared a similar pathway to AFL level.

We'll have to disagree on both points.

Foster
Yeah he seems to be doing a bit better...but is it really AFL standard and enough for where we want to go? Id say no.
We have Weitering & Plowman as locks, Rowe is outstanding atm, White is certainly better and more proven than Foster and if you believe reports, we'll get Marchbank at the end of the year...even if we dont get Marchbank we could probably get a better young defender than Foster.

White vs Adams
I'd say they about equal in skill and athleticism.
Adams has had the benefit of joining a good, well structured team right from the outset.
Unfortunately White joined a disorganised team that saw pretty much ALL our players not play to their full potential.
White has already improved under Bolton and his skills and athleticism looked pretty good to me against Geelong in a well structured team.

I know people think I have a bias towards White, but putting him at the same level in terms of raw talent and output as Adams is silly. Adams has stepped straight into a team that had the second worst defence in the eight last season, and they're now the best defence in the league after round 10.

The system is great, but so is he. I would swap White for Adams in a heartbeat; sizeable upgrade.

When was the last time we held a team goalless in a quarter? They missed a couple of sodas but our backline is so damn organised.. Best backline we've had in years

Edit.. Essendon less than a month ago... derp

Wasn't so long ago you'd think to yourself, gee I'd love being a forward going up against Carlton's backline.

Now quite the opposite.

28 minutes into the 3rd, Curnow gets a free on the wing, send it back in the defensive 50 to Byrne, then to White, Doc, back to Byrne, Everitt, Plowman, Byrne again and sends it inside 50 to lamb. Best play of the day carried out almost entirely by the backline. Having a midfield is overrated :)

Plowman's spin out of trouble:thumbsu:

I think our backline will have their defining test against the adelaide forwards in a few weeks. Just watching the crow against the sajnts now. Wow

It is an absolute delight to have a cohesive group of tough, smart & composed defenders down there. They marshal the rest of the team, direct play, set up zones, initiate attacks and above all - defend. It's an added bonus that they are mostly young. Love that there are two Irish lads amongst it as well, what innovative recruiting.

I like that they've already made us solid defensively even with the other issues we're rectifying - lack of midfield depth and footskills - which would undoubtedly put them under additional pressure with more D50 entries.

Don't want to get ahead of myself though. Still plenty of work to be done. Just exciting to see the youthful building blocks in place.

Our backline literally won us the game on the weekend, glad to see that we can win games even if we are getting crushed in the middle. Something that I as a youngish supporter have never seen before from the Blues.

Just a top post.

Marchbank? Sheehan?
Glass-McCasker is being well backed for making the grade. Pretty sure we'll give him time to develop.

Not seeing anyone else on our list, capable of complementing what we have.
Gowers - maybe. Dick - no. Buckley - no. DVR - not a back-man.

Who do McCasker and Marchbank play like?
