HB Houli - Ryder - Myers
C Prismall -Watson - Stanton
HF Lovett - Gumbleton Reimers

lol wat?

Won't bother doing a best 22 until Feb.

Fletch and Lucas aren't retired yet, so I don't see why you didn't include them.

None of our 08 draftees are in our best 22. They've never played AFL footy before.

Just for fun though, here's what I'm thinking:

B: Henry Slattery, Dustin Fletcher, Andrew Welsh
HB: David Myers, Patrick Ryder, Courtenay Dempsey
C: Andrew Lovett, Jobe Watson, Brent Prismall
HF: Adam McPhee, Scott Lucas, Angus Monfries
F: Alwyn Davey, Matthew Lloyd, Scott Gumbleton

R: David Hille, Mark McVeigh, Brent Stanton

I: Jason Laycock, Bachar Houli, Kyle Reimers, Sam Lonergan

E: Jay Neagle, Leroy Jetta, Tayte Pears

nice, when you look at the list we have an abundance of talent to choose from, no? even tho some call a fair chunk of that line up 'ordinary'...sad, very sad

main starting changes i would make are pears, need to get him up & running asap, & neagle, sorry scotty love u like a brother, but those footsteps your hearing are real

I think that maybe i should have renamed this thread, our best 22 in 1 years time.

This will be Fletchers last year, and i think that Lucas may be squeezed out in favour of youth.

I tried to select a team that I want to see playing in our team that will take us back to the finals

Scotty's a champion of the club, and I doubt he will retire at the end of next year. He will most likely retire at the end of either 2010 or 2011.

Same with Lloydy.

2009 will almost definitely be Fletch's last year, so it would be good to give Hurley some experience, maybe move Fletch to half-back, and put Ryder in the forward line while either Scotty or Lloyd rove in the 50.

/team strategy

Thats just pure speculation

Hurley will not play FB at all this year IMO, he may not even play from round one,

B: H.Slattery T.Pears D.Fletcher

HB: D.Myers P.Ryder A.McPhee

C: A.Lovett J.Watson J.Winderlich

HF: B.Stanton S.Gumbleton M.Lloyd

F: A.Davey S.Lucas A.Monfries

R: D.Hille S.Lonergan B.Prismall

I/C: A.Lovett B.Houli

K.Reimers J.Laycock/T.Bellchambers

E: C.Dempsey L.Jetta J.Neagle

try that for size...

I dont know, IF Fletch has a good year and remains injury free he might play on in 2010 which would more then likely be his last year.
Fletch, i think, would love to go out at least playing finals, which while be a chance if things go right in 2009 is more realistic in 2010.

B Slattery Fletcher Pears

C Riemers Watson Lovett
HF Monfries Lucas Llyod
F Davey Neagle Jetta

R Hillie McViegh Prismall

Gee its exciting when you look at the players that are missing out on a game and the midfield roataions we are capable of. Gumbleton to take over at CHF by years end.

Pears Fletcher McPhee

Myers Ryder Dempsey

Stanton Watson Prismall

Lovett Lucas Monfries

Gumby Lloyd Davey

Hille, McVeigh Lonergan

Laycock Jetta Reimers Welsh

A few things.

Lucas will play more FF than CHF.

Fletch has said this is his last season.

How can Pears be even close to our best 22?

Welsh is a monty to play.

Slattery has to play as the small stopper - who else do we have that we would want to play that role?

Are we selecting a team of the future, a team to devleop or a team to win?

B: H.Slattery - Fletcher - Pears
HB: Myers - Ryder - Houli
C: Welsh - Watson - McPhee
HF: Monfries - Lloyd - Gumbleton
F: Davey - Lucas - Reimers
R: Hille - McVeigh - Stanton

I/C: Laycock - Lovett - Lonergan - Prismall
E: Jetta - Neagle - Dempsey - Nash

Oh No! Lloyd, Lucas and Fletcher are reaching the end of their careers!
Get over it!

B: H.Slattery - Pears - Hurley
HB: Myers - Ryder - Houli
C: Welsh - Watson - Prismall
HF: Monfries - Gumbleton - McPhee
F: Davey - Neagle - Reimers
R: Hille - McVeigh - Stanton

I/C: Laycock - Lovett - Lonergan - Nash
E: Jetta - Dempsey - Zaharakis - Still

One thing I feel I must point out is with the the shortage of 25-30yr old players we will be able to form a team which will stick together for many many years, helping Essendon become a formidable team as each player will know how every other player plays if that makes sense.

After Lucas, Lloyd and Fletcher retire we will only have about 3-4 players retire in the few years after that giving us more reason to delist players to create room allowing us to easily delist players who aren't going to generally help us on our way to our 17th Premiership!

I'm excited!

Well I sure as hell hope we're selecting a team for the future.

Lucas - CHF / FF Call it what you will but he'll be a key forward

Yes Welsh is in the team as a tagger and or potential option for a smallish forward though that is always dangerous

Slattery has major deficiencies in his game and doesn't have to play

Pears is in the side as he's showed that he's got composure, can play small and tall, uses the ball well, has agility and will become a star of our future side.

I hope we do win games this year but my major priority is that we start developing to our next flag.

Players will play when they earn and deserve games - this is Knight's mantra

The sooner you realise this the better.

Your reasoning is suited to the NAB Cup

Just looking at those teams we have pretty good depth with at least two players for every position on the ground. The only player types we need to draft are a ruckman and a small defender. Other than that it looks pretty good.

my 09 team
B - Nash, Fletcher, Myers
HB - L-Murray, Ryder, Houli
C - Winderlich, Watson, Welsh
HF - McPhee, Lucas, Lovett
F - Davey, Lloyd, Neagle
R - Hille, Stanton, McVeigh
i/c - Laycock, Prismall, Reimers, Monfries

i don't fully support the 3 talls + McPhee forwardline, but with Gumbleton/Neagle coming into their 3rd & 4th seasons respectively, they need to get some games under their belt next year. let's say 10-12 games each.
i have selected Myers ahead of Hurley for that 3rd tall defender spot because he's a better player at this point in time. but if 1 of Fletcher/Ryder/Myers got injured, Hurley would be the 1st guy to replace.
Prismall is coming back from a knee reco, so you wouldn't expect much from him in 09. maybe coming off the bench playing 70% gametime when he's ready.

the decision to select Hurley over Rich indicates we're still thinking long-term, and i think our starting lineup will take on a similar approach.

Pears Fletcher McPhee

Myers Ryder Dempsey

You have to have at least one small shut down defender. Honestly, the (H) Slattery bashing is incredible. An absolute certainty to be in the 22:

B: Slattery - Fletcher - Pears
HB: Nash - Ryder - Reimers
C: Winderlich - Lonergan - Lovett
HF: Monfries - Lloyd - McPhee
F: Davey - Lucas - Neagle/Gumbleton
R: Hille - Watson - McVeigh
I: Laycock - Welsh - Stanton - Houli/Prismall
E: Prismall/Houli - Gumbleton/Neagle- Myers
