What do you think our forward line is going to look like next year (barring injuries) as we enter the finals with a top 4 position?

I'll go with:

HF. Sylvia Watts Howe
F. Jurrah Jamar Petterd

I think that lineup might be on the tall side though, and where does Cook fit in? Maybe coming off the bench?

In my opinion we need to draft/trade for a small and quick crumbing forward who loves to tackle. That would be the final piece of the juggernaut puzzle (and keeping Scully...)

Do we need a quality small though? I know there's Wonna, but Jurrah and possibly Ricky Bobby both play more ideally as crumbing forwards - small they aren't but nevertheless play the role well.

I won't seen as the GF will be back in September next year when we return to 22 rounds..

No one likes a smart-arse.

HF: Davey Watts Petterd
F: Jurrah Cook Howe

Jamar in the ruck, and Martin starting in defence. Have the small forwards rotating off the bench and through the midfield.

Maybe this is why Jurrah is not leaping, coach's instructions and getting him to become the crumbing forward we need

My personal highlight from the Tigers game:

Ball kicked long into a two-on-twoin the Demons square. Jurrah at the back. He had the sit - almost. The other Melbourne player was Stef Martin I think.

What did Jurrah do? Front and centre, roved and goaled. Perfect.

What a change of complexion Mitch Clark makes to our forward setup and depth!

I don't necessarily have a preferred forward line set-up at this stage (I suspect it will be a WIP for the first couple of months) but if we go with the following purely as an example and then look at the current/future depth options our forward line set-up could be scary.

FF: Davey Clark Green
HF: Howe Watts Jurrah

Interchangeable

Clark -> Resting ruck

Davey -> Lawrence/rotating small mid?

Howe -> Sylvia/Tapscott/Taggert/Dunn/maybe Bennell (ignoring preferred leg)

Watts -> Cook/McDonald?

Green -> Petterd

F: Clark. Jarrah. Pettard
HF: Green Watts. Sylvia

I can assure you it will hard for the opponents to stop marks deep inside 50 with those sets of hands. Pettard, sylvia and Jarrah have proven to be crummers... Unless Davey can crum again like he did 5 years ago would shouldn't waste our time of dreaming off one to line up in the starting Forward line.

Howe & Dunn unlucky - as exciting as Howe was in her first year. In a finals team we need experience players lined up at the HFF to support Watts.

That's a dangerous looking forward line. My only concern would be a lack of defensive pressure at ground level. Blease, Davey, Jetta, perhaps Lawrence must rotate through here to provide this. And there's no question Howe will get first crack in that starting 6 after the preseason he is having, probably at the expense of Petterd.

And I don't care how good our forward line is. If we don't get it in there a hell of a lot more than we did last year then it will all be for nothing.

Yep we need mids. JV will help but not solve our lack of midfield depth.

Howe Clarke Sylvia
Jurrah Watts Green

Quite tall but Jurrah, Watts and Howe are quite versatile. The flanks and pockets will rotate a lot anyway..

From what I'm hearing from the training reports, under Neeld we'll see more longer kicks to a forward contest. This will require some bigger bodies in the forward line.

Watts Martin Sylvia
Jurrah Clark Davey

- Martin playing 20% ruck 65% forward, and Jamar 80% ruck 5% forward.
- Petterd rotating with Sylvia/Trengove through mid/half forward.
- Howe on the wing as a long option out of the backline.
- Green would rotate with Watts, Howe and Jurrah.

I would love to see Davey back in the forward line. His tackling pressure and precise kicking can be utilised here to full effect rather than kicking to one on ones in the midfield. Also looking for a bit more balance, not sure I subscribe to resting ruckmen in the forward 50, especially while Clark is there.

Agreed, let the hunted be the hunter again. Going back to basics and applying defensive pressure he could find the form that he showed in 04 and 05.

Hopefully Petterd can apply some pressure like he did last year after his spell at Casey, his game against Richmond was outstanding (14 inside 50 tackles). Howe will be in the side for mine, his agressive attack on the footy in the air was the best of any forwards last year.
