Our Forward line post-Barry

Aaron Cornelius.

Was a highly rated and impressive young key forward at Brisbane. Fev came and left, Cornelius seems to have gone backwards. Do we want to risk this happening to Grant or Jones?

Say we bring in Fev, who is a completely different person to Hall. I'd bank on Hall giving the young forwards advice and tips during the week. In the same way I'd bank on Fev telling the young forwards to piss off out of his space, and just worrying about himself.

Tom Hawkins
Taylor Walker
Charlie Dixon
Matthew Bate

Losing Barry, Huddo, Gilbee and Hargrave would net us a fair bit of cash left over, and with our first pick looking to be in the late to mid teens, we could lure one of the first three over with a first rounder + Dylan Addison/Will Minson, or Bate with something alot less.

And don't say they wont give up Charlie Dixon. They have three young star key forwards, and with the way their list is going, one will leave in the comig years. Tom Lynch was my favourite to jump ship, but Dixon is in and out of the side, is older then the other two, and could be a perfect young forward for us.

Interesting debate this.
I always thought Grant close to goal and Jones up the ground but am starting to change my mind.

Grant really battled early in his career with his kicking but seems to be alot better now. His field kicking to a lead has been sensational this year. He also has pace to play a lead up forward role. You mention he gets lost up the ground but I think its more about the style of footy being played across all teams. The best lead up forward in the comp has battled this year... Reiwoldt.
Grant is never going to put on weight enough to be a bustling forward out of the square. No point hoping he will.. So I think his pace and kicking to a lead is better suited to a lead up lead up than Jones.

Jones on the other hand is the best contested mark we have seen at the club in some time (currently 4th in comp)...... Where do contested marks hurt sides.... inside 50!!

Cloke (1st in contested marks)... primarly deep forward - we all know of his kicking dramas
Podsiadly (2nd in contested marks) .... deep 50 player (also has kicking trouble)
Petrie I think is third..... also used to have kicking trouble - deep forward
Jones is fourth - yet I wouldnt mind betting the % of his marks are outside 50 compared to the other 3.
Josh Kennedy rounds out the top 5...Tippett also in the top 10.

You seeing a pattern here ??????

So I think the kid is more likely to develop his body for deep forward. The one ? is his kicking for goal... well his kicking full stop.
I see alot of a young Jack Reiwoldt in Jones. Good hands bad kick. Jack fixed his kicking and his contested marks are more suited to deep forward. So I think thats where Jones may well develop.

So for me - develop lead up CHF's - Play Jones deep

One of the best post i have read on this board in the past 3-4 years :thumbsu:

No thanks. There's a reason why they're in and out of their sides.
Charlie Dixon is worth a look, but a 1st rounder and a player? Please... we have noone on our list that GC would want. And I would be reluctant to even lose a 2nd rounder for him.

Jones and a resting ruckman (Roughy/Cordy), providing Grant begins to improve is more than enough talls.

Morris Markovic Wood
Higgins Williams Murphy
Sherman Boyd Ward
Grant Jones Dalhaus
Vezpremi Roughead Gia

Minson Griffen Picken

Cooney, Cross/Libba, Barlow/Reid

SUB: Skinner

That would be a team with a lot of options to rotate through the midfield/forward line.

Keys -

Markovic stamps his place at FB.
Roughead/Mino kick goals as the resting FF.
Grant, Jones, Vez all develop massively next pre-season.
Cal Ward stays.

Agree with CyclopsRules, Jones should be played closer to goal, especially since his field kicking is somewhat dodgy.

Grant can sometimes play FF, but is best suited to HFF. You might consider him a taller version of Gia.

Personally I can't see Hahn getting back in the Seniors. That would be a step backwards. The back line is really depleted this year and it shows, no lake, no hargrave and gilbee who is really on the decline from previous season form. Higgins has gone down back of recent times, and I see a few comments on this post that Higgins is good in the back line aka Bob Murphy off half back, but I disagree I feel the best football I remember Higgins playing for the dogs was off hff. from hbf he does have strong skills at hitting a target, a good field kick, but he's biggest weakness in my opinion is his not accountable for his man. This is evident when watching him in games. He also does not posses the same decision making skills and execution in tight situations as bob murphy.

Gia Jones Dahlhaus

Higgins Grant Sherman

vez Minson/Roughead hoops - in the mix

Hill???? Lake????

Mino, Big Will or whatever you want to call him is bona fide trade bait.

Richmond if he wants to stay in Vic or Port if he wants to play in SA possible homes.

He is not a forward's arse crack.

If he go into 2012 with the same failed structures and game plan then expect
another failed season.

What are your expectations for next year?

I think 2012, post Bazza will be very interesting. We do have a few options or candidates on the list that I want to explore before thinking about what is about outside this list.

The future does seem to be that 2 rucks is no longer viable unless they can play in other positions. We seem well place on paper in the future. Roughead and Cordy both can play other positions, Roughead is a prospect forward and Cordy is currently playing everywhere for Willi. He is very versatile, just needs to get some games now at the level and have a good pre season.

Jones and Grant have shown they can play. Jones has really taken a step this year. I think he is best suited playing higher though. Grant seems best suited as a third tall...he can roll through FF to add some variance to the structure. But neither seem suited in build to be the power forward as such.

I think mosts good sides have the monster power forward. Roughead and Cordy fit the bill or they will. The other one I like for the power forward is Tom Hill. He's got the size and is very mobile too. Just reckon there is something to like there.

Panos is not really that big. Perhaps more the Jones size I think. They are playing him back at Willi now and he's doing ok. He is a great kick for goal...pace maybe his issue. He's in the mix.

In the draft we might get one, but it would be a few years before they will impact.

Replacing a player of Barry Hall's ability is hard. But i suspect that with Hudson also near the end, that Cordy and Roughead in tandem will be his replacement next year. Being still young and developing, we'll need back up for them so I'd be hanging onto Big Will, atleast he can ruck and pinch hit forward if required.

We still lack that crumber. Vespremi, Djerrkurra and Hill are probably not that type of player while Sherman is almost what we need. Hoops shows some promise and Dalhause can play forward but he's not quite the crumbing forward I'm thinking of but yes he can roll through there and the midfield, but we need a partner in crime. We need to scour the lower levels to find one.

Higgins Jones Grant

??? Cordy Giansiracusa

Roughead rucks and changes with Cordy. Tom Hill also a FF candidate.

Watching Barry turn the game against the Eagles and nearly snatch a win. I got even more petrified thinking of our key forwards for next year.
Every week takes us closer to end of our crap 2011 season, so if we think any one of Roughead/Cordy/Grant/Jones are going to fill a KPF posi next year, we are kidding ourselves.

I'm very pessimistic about next year and our ability to kick winning scores. It crossed my mind yesterday that we have no-one who kicks for goal like Barry does.....I never realised when he played for the swans what a straight kick for goal he was.

No Ward, no Hall, perhaps no Wood, perhaps no Lake, and Cooney playing a part time role. Sorry but I fear the worst.

BUMP - revisiting this thread 9 months on, the forward line is looking shaky...

In 5 games, the equal best haul from a Bulldog player is 2 goals (aside from Clay Smith's heroics on debut).

The leading goalkickers are Cooney (6), Jones (6), Dahlhaus (5) and Giansiracusa (5). Josh Kennedy got 7 in round 1

We always knew that we were going to struggle for a while (post Hall). Its no surprise.

It would also help if players kicking to a forward could actualy hit a target instead of missing completely. landing it on the ground in front of them or bombing it high .Some of our kicking is just woeful hard to believe anly a few years ago we were a team noted for our kicking skills.

Not to mention the amount of time that it takes to get there, we must have the slowest transition out of defence and through the midfield in the entire competition, and when they do finally inch it up to half forward they continually mess about like its a game of hot potato, before the inevitable rushed high kick.

You really have to pity the fools that are waiting some kind of ordered delivery into our forward line.

I was absolutely staggered to see Bob Murphy streak through the centre of the ground to hit a leading (Jones?) on the chest on the weekend. It was quite possibly the first instance of systematic play that I have seen all year.

Seriously, even Barry would look ridiculous with what we have dished up thus far.

I think that its looking promising actually. Its not easy to suddenly replace someone like Big Bad Bazza..... I think that in time, Grant, Djukurra, Cordy, Dalhaus , Jones and hopefully a few others along the way with the help of Cooney who will play the rest of his career down there can come of age and become a real threat down forward...

People have to be patient and realise that it takes a good 3 - 5 years of playing together, building chemistry etc to really gel ! Its not going to happen overnight.....

Keep the faith - We will get there.....

I hold little faith that Grant will become a reliable player. I hope he does but he just goes missing for quarters and sometimes even games.

Yeah, I agree. I've found myself really disliking when he plays. Especially when he plays well one week, but then is shambles the next. I don't think he will make the step to being more than he is now, sadly.
