What is going on with our set-up? It is all over the place and I don't think the midfield knows where or who to kick to half the time.

I know White is a little on the nose with some around here lately, but why does it seem like we've gone cold on the White-TDL combination that was working quite well over the last two months of the 2010 season? I realise that Trent is injured, but I haven't seen anyone mention that combination as a possibility when discussing our forward line.

It was Bradshaw and Goodes, then Goodes and White, then White and TDL. Now it's Reid and Goodes, but we can't waste Goodes up forward for an entire game and that was proven during the last quater yesterday.

I'm not entirely sure which way we should go, but we do need to stick with a combination for a while as we did last year and let it become cohesive. In my opinion we should go back to White and TDL as they know each other's game and the 2nd tall should be Reid, with Goodes only chipping in if he's not required in the middle.

Is it worth throwing LJ into the deep end. It seems White's output is pretty limited. Maybe give White a few games to do something, and if he doesn't throw LJ in.

I would like to think TDL is selected as soon as he is fit. Reid looked good yesterday.

Perfect world, I'd want it to be:

F: TDL Bradshaw Moore
HF: McGlynn Reid Rohan

+ White, Goodes, Bolton

Bradshaw plays out of the square, Moore and TDL at his feet and moving out to HF, McGlynn and Rohan playing mainly across HF but pushing up into the midfield and Reid patrolling CHF and the wings (as a true roaming CHF). And then of course Goodes going forward as well. Imagine the forward pressure with TDL, McGlynn and Rohan...

Anyway, back to reality. I do think Moore is an important cog as the structure of our forward 50 really does seem to hold stronger when he's there.

The problem with White now is that he's again being swapped between forward and ruck. He did definitely have a good thing going with TDL last year. Trent always seemed to know where to be to get a crumb from Jesse. So I'd love to see a Jesse, Reid, TDL, Moore forward line with Goodes and McGlynn floating through as well. But this is going to be hard to do with the substitution rule in place now. TDL's lack of versatility and Jesse's ability to ruck are both amplified by the rule (which I truly despise).

I like Reid taking control at CHF, what also impressed me with him, when there was a tangle of players getting up from the packs for ball ups, he seemed to be at the bottom of the packs alot times to my surprise, he doesnt mind going in to win his own ball, we have a gem..

Good observation, wouldn't see White doing that

But he does do that. We got two goals from his efforts in the EF last year. Handball to Jetta in the square and then the handball over the top to TDL in the last after he dived on the ball at ground level. I'm not a fan of White in the forward/ruck role, if failed last year and that was part of the problem on Sunday. He has to be a stay at home FF now imo, because Reid looks a much more natural roaming forward.

Needs to smash more packs because when he does do it, it splits. Then the same old soft hands, positioning etc. Same old with Jesse but he needs to get a move on because Reid has put the pressure on and the sub rule/Seaby means we probably can't carry Jesse in the forward line unless he is performing.

HF: Bolton - Reid - McGlynn
F: Moore - White - TDL

Maybe something like that?? Goodes is probably a near permanent forward now but I'd like him to return to the middle.

If Goodes is going to be used as a forward in Bradshaw's absence I have no trouble with Reid being the other tall option. Superb pair of contested hands.

If Whites going to be a serious part than he needs to be the guy leading wide and hard to space in the pockets while Reid comes down the corridor at CHF, Goodes staying deep close to goal as our ideal option.

TDL would be good to play the small foil for the lot of them.

it wasn't so much getting there hands on it on Sunday, more kicking the score.

White needs some angry pills, with that body he would and should be menacing. Ive always said the same about Travis Cloke when he's aggressive he plays his best footy. Im not talking nasty, just aggressive.(a little nasty wouldnt hurt lol)

I'd like to see that forward line that AG has posted and, like just about every Swans fan, want Goodes to play mainly as a midfielder who rests forward.

I really think that's the way that Reid and White will improve the quickest and our team will play best. Goodes is near unbeatable in the middle due to his explosive speed, strength and his size but is another power forward who can be shut down with a good defender and a lack of midfield supply. Goodes in the midfield keeps him around the ball more and in the game.

White, TDL and Moore deep with McGlynn and Reid across HF is my vote.

That's what lost us the game IMO. Goodes was struggling to get his hands on the footy and Melbourne was starting to get all the momentum, this is when Horse needed to throw Goodes into the middle. He was wasted in the 2nd half, the delivery into the forward line wasn't great either. I don't mind seeing Goodes start forward but he definitely needs to be put on the ball at times during the game.

It would have been much easier to throw Goodes into the middle if Horse didn't have to concern himself with when to throw Seaby into the game as the substitute. He had to take a big man off to replace him (logically, as we needed all the run we could get in the last). He wanted to keep Mummy on who was rucking well, so he took Reid off (would have made more sense to me to take White off) who had been in the forward line all day as the CHF, so he couldn't really take Goodes out of the forward line having just taken Reid out.

Hopefully Horse will work this out a bit better over the next few weeks to give himself more opportunities to release Goodes to the midfield.

One of the reasons Goodes hasn't been played in the midfield much is probably because White hasn't made himself enough of a target up forward. Until White and Reid improve, Goodesy is still by far our most dangerous forward. It's a shame, but that's the reality.

(Despite the tone of this post, I'm a big White fan)

How long is Bradshaw still out for?

I know he isn't the Swans long term solution but given the delivery so far this season I think he'd be very dangerous for you guys this year.

Some have suggested they are doubtful he'll play another AFL game. The longer this goes on the more I'm starting to think the same way.

Honestly, at this stage I think we need to plan as though he wont play another game.

So start trying to settle down our forward lineup in the early games of this year, and I think that has to start with starting Goodes outside the forward line, and if we are having issues taking marks inside 50, then he can shift there. But I think (as I've mentioned over multiple threads) that having Jesse + Goodes + Reid + take your pick of small forward clogs up the space too much.

So ideally we'd have
B: Richards, LRT, Smith
HB: Everitt, Grundy, Mattner
C: Hannebery, Goodes, Jetta
R: Mumford, Jack, Kennedy
HF: O'Keefe, Reid, McVeigh
F: TDL ,White, Bevan

INT:McGlynn, Pyke, Bolton
Sub: Shaw

^ or something along those lines

Dead right. He needs to switch on his mojo by thumping Glass on the weekend. ;)

Nothing short of a KO will do. BBBH did it and look at his career. Coming up to 700 goals now. Besides I want to see which WC player will run up and fall over at his feet.

haha I dont mean king hitting anyone, just maul em a bit, he let a nice bone rattling tackle rip last week you could see the intent and was rewarded for it.

Hunter backing away at the end seals it.

Just show him the replay of the screamer over Lachie Hansen from last year, to remind him what he's both capable of and allowed to do.
