Last weeks midfield gave us a sample of what our midfield could look like moving forward, but there are still plenty of unknowns. We had Baker, RCD and Naish moving through there last Saturday, along with Castagna and Rioli at times. THis week Ross will join them. I think this week will be a wonderful glimpse of what our midfield may evolve into moving forward.

Why a starting midfield line up on Cotchin, Prestia and Edwards is tough to replace, I am becoming more and more optimistic that a line up of Bolton, Baker and RCD will be very competitive.

So what do you think our midfield may look like? Who are you confident will step up, who are you hopeful will make it and who do you think is unlikely at this stage.

From our current list I think RCD, Bolton and Ross will all be mainstay midfielders. I'm a Ross fan and whilst a few have dropped off I reckon with time he'll get there. Just go back and watch his debut game and the potential is there to see. I like Bakes in the middle but I still like him more off half back as he sees the game well (so similar to Caleb Daniel)

Not sure on Naish yet, not completely sold on him yet to be honest. I think he's got some nice attributes but I see him drifting out of games at times. I like Hugo and I reckon he could eventually break in there as a pacey outside mid as well. We're talking about kids here though - they can all go either way. It's a gamble.

I also worry about baker breaking in the middle. He is great but small and a nutter.

That said he gets smashed playing back and forward too

Baker, Ross, RCD, Bolton, Dow, Stack all have genuine talent. If they grow together they will be at least an above average AFL midfield I reckon. And the talent is there for them to be well above average.

In the meantime there'll be new draftees, developments amongst those we have (Ralphsmith etc) and and we can FA/trade in talent. All the while Meatball etc will be there.

If it goes well we'll simply change the cast and continue the series.

Graham must be playing for another club.

Passenger only kicked 3 goals in a Grand Final in his 5th game.

Top 6, I'd have Bolton, Graham, Baker, RCD, Dow, Ross. I think Bolton can play the 'Dusty-role', moving from midfield to forward line though he would be more of a elusive, leading, marking threat rather than the bull Dusty is. RCD is crucial to our inside capabilities. If he can barrel through stoppages, he will fee it out to the likes of Baker, Dow and even Naish to distribute the ball.

I'm also excited by our ruck options. In many ways we almost have an embarrassment of riches with Nank just entering his prime, Soldo a solid tapman, CCJ and Chol forward/rucks along with the new kids on the block Ryan and Mate. These players could make our midfield even more dangerous as long as they learn their job doesn't end when the ball kits the ground.

The best part about all this is that we HAVE been rebuiding but without all the pain and attention that bottom dwelling teams currently are experiencing. All of our development and competition for spots has occurred just beneath the surface of a premiership dynasty AFL team.

Don’t forget Noah Anderson’

Shades of that off-season when about a dozen morons on here had Jack Steele in their best 22 at Tigerland ;)
But I'm guessing our best midfield in 5 years will have at least two people not currently on the list.

The futures so bright in the midfield for the immediate and long term future (and if we can manage to bring Tom Green :sneaky: back to his spiritual home) But as it is Martin will probably transition to 80% forward line as Riewoldt & Cotchin may retire next year, this'll leave the midfield bulk to Presita, Bolton & hopefully RCD with Graham, MRJ & Baker being the main rotations. The wings are a little more "hold this space" but KMac & Pickett are fine right now and Naish/Ralphsmith could be the answer.

Graham
Bolton

RCD
Naish
Ross
Baker
Dow
Martyn
Ralphsmith

Bold have established themselves, the rest are fighting for a spot over the next couple of years while we still have the premiership crew running around together.

RCD - good signs first 3 games
Naish - looked good in 3rd full game after spending a couple more years developing
Ross - currently looked upon as the 23rd player judging by selection this year. Unable to get a good run in preferred position
Dow - working his way back from injury, looked incredibly smooth last week
Martyn - had a taste earlier this year and like Dow looked smooth back at the VFL level last week.
Ralphsmith - finally got a taste after pressing all year and didn't look out of place.

Foundation looks good, but can't rest on their laurels.

Baker is not established, handy though
