I don't know about you guys but i think our gameplan needs to be re-jigged a little in order to get our consistentcy and wins back on the board. Watching the game last night, i noticed that we never run and carry the ball, brake the lines, play on after a mark. I realise we miss Walker a little but as we know, one man doesn't change a team. Where is our courage to take the game on? We have very good midfielders with pace and skill but our gameplan is very stop start which doesn't let us use our most attacking weapon to it's full. This stop start football is leting oposition teams get back in numbers and double even triple team Fev. People i think are blaming the structure of our forward line, i don't think it is our main problem. If we got the ball down their quicker, run and carry, it give our forwards a chance, one on one. Now if the reason for use not imploying this type of gameplan which is very successive at Hawthorn, St.Kilda etc (the top teams) is fitness, then that is fairly disgraceful and we are in for another shocking year which i pray to god we aren't.

Another thing was either our it was our fitness or desire to win the ball but when ever we lost it (which was quite often) there was 3,4 or 5 Saints players streaming forward trying to recieve a handball while our players either stood and watched or couldn't keep up. It happened quite often at stoppages and turnovers.

Not sure what you guys think but the game is evolving into hard running football. I think our gameplan need to change in order for us to win games in the long run. I'm trying to find a solution for a problem (which is winning games) rather than bad mouthing players and coaches, thoughts?

to be honest i don't think we are really seeing the gameplan ratts is trying to implement. it will take a season for the boys to adapt to it properly and grasp it.

juddy has said in numerous interviews they have found a gameplan they all like and are trying to adapt to it - it's just a matter of time. at least we aren't just bombing it long the whole time, there has been a lot more run and chip chip - that has been noticable.

It is obvious we are holding onto the ball more to deprive the opposition of possessions, but this in turn hurts us going forward as it allows for the flood.
We don't presently have a forward line strong enough to defeat the flood so winning scores will be hard to get. Once the midfield is close to 100% and the defence start to gel we will have to pick up the tempo and take the chance of kicking longer more and more. Until then the gameplan will probably be all about minimising the damage. Good signs last night though. I thought our general play was pretty good. It's our inability to kick regulation goals that is hurting us. Unless you have players kicking freaky snap goals we would be getting beaten by a 100 points or more.

Game plan is easy - executing it correctly and sfficiently is the hard part.

NAB Cup game against Hawks.....we started off handball crazy out of the backline. Players got smashed and lost confidence.

Last night - no handball to guys running past out of the backline ( just chipping it around by foot = slow movement ).

Getting the confidence to play with the right balance is not as easy as some think.

i believe we have seen stints of our gameplan, although the boys dont have the fitness to carry it on through the whole game. Which is evident in our 2nd half fadeouts.

If the Carlton game plan is to kick short and wide at all times instead of being more direct it is going to be another long year, as any forward structure is going to find it difficult with this style.

There was a comment on this post about the new game plan may take a year, l think this year needs to be a year of significant improvement and stop making excuses, as there are alot of other teams performing okay with young players in their teams .

gameplan is not really the problem, it is the execution of the gameplan by the players that is the problem.

we have too many footballers that are not skillfull enough to be playing afl football week in week out.

we have tried playing long direct football, defensive football, flooding, posession football but our players are not good enough and are struggling to get the basics right hence making the gameplan look inefective.

We only have a plan A and not a plan B. We start so well because the coach is yet to pick what exactly we are doing. When he realizes, he shuts us down completely and thats it for the night.
Ratten only likes to attack and I think we should start defending more often, as the record of 23 consecutive matches conceding 100+ points is laughable and embarrassing and obviously reflects back to our gameplan. Whats the point of full out attacking and pushing everyone forward when we are going to give away 20 goals for the night? Sydney may be horrendous from the spectacle side of their games but they get the job down by chipping it around and pushing players back to shut down the opposition. I would rather us play slow tempo football like that then look exciting for a qtr and a half and then let the opp blow the game out of proportion!
