AFL Club
Adelaide
Dawson's performance last night and these past couple of seasons has me wondering where he fits.

End of his career I think he'll be the best captain we've had, big call but I'm more than willing to die on this hill.

Best captain in the AFL currently, just a smidge ahead of Gawn and Bont.

The funny thing is that if you built the best ever crows team from all the players since inception, Daws would not make it into the midfield. He'd be half back or half forward or maybe on a wing.

McLeod, Ricciuto & Dangerfield would be the on ballers.

We can just swap McLeod and Dawson off half back. That would be nice!

Was Richard Douglas ever our captain?

Not sure how I'd rank the best, but it would be out of Ricciuto, Walker and Dawson

Dawson is rising but only due to tenure he's not quite there yet.

For me it's a coin toss between Tex and Roo, but gun to my head it's probably Roo. Just.

Roo, Tex, Dawson (currently). My heart says Tex because of what he had to lead this club through, but recency bias forgets just how often Roo took a game by the scruff. Which admittedly is easier as a midfielder. Ask me tomorrow and my answer might be Tex, he was my first instinct.

When Dawson single handedly gets us across the line in a few finals his claim rises. He's already clear number 3 for me though.

roo is the clear best IMO, but daddy dawson is fast catching up

roo in his 2001-2004 prime was just a beast

Macca in the midfield in that 2001 season was something to behold.
Gets ball, takes two steps, is now 5 meters clear of everyone. Just insane acceleration over a short distance. Unstoppable over a whole game.

Dawson right now is at that level in the mids. Crazy good skills in tight, running away with the ball, and a long lethal kick, for goal and for passes. That first quarter might be one of the best, if not the best (DJ in the prelim tho...) I've seen from a crows player.

Mark Bickley was the right person to be captain during the Blight years.
Tex was the right captain during the Phil Walsh era, and then the Don Pyke stint, but it comes down to Mark Ricciuto or Jordan Dawson for me.

I split the full-time captains into two groups.

Dawson is definitely in the good half. But I don't think it's possible to assess where he ranks until after the fact. And he's too intertwined with Nicks' coaching for mine to be completely uncritical.

The bad half are players who were only captain because they are the coach's pet (Van Berlo), or it was "their turn" (Goodwin), or both (Sloane).

At this point I would rank Roo
Tex was a very humble captain as appointed by Walshy. He said something like he had this “follow me “ about him and team first
Tex still shows these traits today
Dawson gets right up there too thus far
