I know we have been giving a lot of toasties to the likes of Langers, Frost, Keeffe and other individuals in the backline, but tonight highlighted just how well our back half (and even some of the formerly criticized mids) are working together to produce some fantastic defensive efforts despite our backline stocks being massively depleted.
Our starting six tonight was:
Seedsman - Frost - Toovey
Dwyer - Keeffe - Lumumba
Out of the side tonight or not available from injury from our backline stocks alone was Marley Williams, Nick Maxwell, Ben Reid, Nathan Brown, Tom Langdon, and Adam Oxley (including him because he does play off the back half). That injury list alone is a strong starting back six, and I'd probably preference that almost against the starting six we had tonight.
If you told me that in Round 15 2014 our starting back six included Sam Dwyer as one of our 'small defenders', I'd have assumed we were tanking. There is 427 games across that entire backline, with Harry and Tooves making up 318 of them. That leaves 109 games under the belt of the remaining 4 boys out there.
Despite these adversities, our backline across the breadth of the season has kept it's head under pressure and worked seamlessly to repel some serious heat. Obviously there have been games where it has fallen apart or not worked as well, but I've been seriously impressed with how Buckley and the boys has gotten the defensive stuff right under pressure here.
So here's to our makeshift back six, getting it (mostly) done week in week out.
