During the 5AA call of the game against Melbourne, Rowey kept referring to the Crows "new zone" or "tweaked zone" working better than than the old zone - anyone know how it has changed? I think he said it was a 15-man zone, but not sure about that. Obviously Melbourne got a couple of goals by getting through it but it seemed to work to significantly reduce their inside 50's.

Any ideas?

Don't reckon there was all that much that was new on the weekend. Sometimes Rowey just likes to sound like he's up to speed on all the modern trends so invents things his 'keen eye' has spotted and throws in a few buzz words so it seems like he has his finger on the pulse. I will attempt to do the same now:

For quite a few seasons we played with a 14 man zone with the back four playing man on man. This worked ok but then Hawthorn took it to a new level and used all 18 players and we tried to follow suit in 2009, with Viney pulling the strings, with limited success initially.

The only new reference I can remember from the weekend was from Gerard Healy who referred to our two different zones as a defensive zone and an offensive zone. What he was referring to was that when we put the screws on Melbourne and our forwards were pressuring them right back in their defensive fifty this was our 'offensive zone' at play.

When we sit back and play a defensive zone it is more like a flood and we give them as much free footy across the backline as they want.

I assume we want to be able to switch between the two styles during a game.

I think the only difference was that we had the opportunity to play our offensive zone a lot more often. It definately made us look a bit different.

The worrying thing was our transition from offence to defence. Once they cleared our offensive zone, we gifted them goals way too easily.

Thanks for your thoughts, appreciate it...thinking back on the game I can see the difference between the offensive and defensive zones. As you say switching between them during the game is the thing.
Thanks

Isn't Rowe a helper or a midfield coach out at the Bays? I would say he has a better understanding of the modern game and midfield setups and the like than the rest of us on this board do.

Yeah he is and it's quite possible that he is on the money with all his observations.

There are still quite a few meat heads out there though who are coaching in various roles at SANFL Clubs because they played at a decent level themselves and are prepared to give up their time, not necessarily because they are particularly switched on as coaches. Many coaching roles at SANFL clubs are essentially volunteer roles or the payment is more an honorarium.

While he is on 5AA he is a commentator and presenter. In this roll he is primarily employed to entertain listeners. Whether he actually understands the modern game or not is not really the question. As a commentator Carl is spot on. His calling is often over the top, sensationalist ranting interlaced with an overdose of buzzwords and frivilous observations.
