I believe Scott is contracted with Geelong until the end of 2017. If and when Scott hangs up his clip board who would you like to see as our next coach:

- Another outsider like Bomber & Scott?
- A favourite son with limited experience, like Cameron Ling?
- A favourite son with coaching experience outside Geelong, e.g., Hinkley or Sanderson?

Definitely don't care about a favourite son. Mark Thompson wasn't, and neither was Scott. Both won premierships for us.

To me, whoever is the best option that can provide the best chance for success - both short and long term.

Who cares.
Chris Scott is doing a good job and has the team in good shape to compete over the next five years.
He won't be going anywhere

You and me both.

Of the three recent 'favourite sons' appointed, one is out of a job, one should be out of a job (and prosecuted to the hilt by ASADA/WADA for his flagrant disregard for the welfare of the players at his 'beloved' club) and the other is finding out just how hard it is to really stay competitive at the pointy end in this current incarnation of the AFL/VFL.

It would be great for the headlines and footy tragics if the objectively superior candidate to replace CS was a favourite son.

But that's as far as 'the magic' extends for me.

Just get the best man for the job; he'll end up a 'Geelong person' with all of us the moment he wins us any real success.

Hope you're right. But the sands are changing at Geelong. The culture is changing (proof may not be the most reliable source - a player delisted in 2014, but the point he made was that many of the senior players are looking after themselves now).

If Geelong was to crash in 2015 or 2016 who will be under pressure?

Geelong is now no different to any other team, so its not unhealthy to consider a succession plan.

But I hope Scott sees out his contract by enjoying success.

That's not exactly narrowing the field! :)

He hasn't yet had to handle any hard times.
It will be interesting to see how he deals with our slide in 2016-17.

Except for a couple of other no-names such as Davis* and Hickey.

* AA Captain-Coach, too.

ahh your not bad are you, very knowledgeable with a decent sense of humour
an all round good guy

ill rephrase it and say in my life time junior first player coach

and perhaps he can entice nathan to assist?

Do you have prophetic insight Fred?

Can you give me a heads-up on when the supposed "Rapture" is going to take place?

Was just thinking today and realised its already Scott's 5th year coaching Geelong, goes quick doesn't it?

I've never really thought about who our next coach will be but I'd really love Ken Hinkley. Cameron Ling is also a strong candidate, but that's further down the track as I think Scott will be our coach for a while.

I'd be happy to see Hinkley come back to Geelong after the 07-09 guys were all retired.

The way it shapes right now, I'd have to agree.

2015 will tell us a lot about Kenny from Camperdown, though.

Can he kick on with them under the weight of expectation?

I'm figuring he's good enough to get it done but I'll be intrigued to see how it goes.

I don't think he's job is secure. Lets face it the first year he took up the reins at Geelong he was gifted a talented team, most coaches could have led that side to a premiership.

2nd year as a coach he couldn't manage to win our only final at home, 3rd year as coach we were lucky to beat Port and went out the following week and 4th year as coach we were out in straight sets.

So the past 3 years we win 1 final out of 5 and you say he won't be going anywhere. To me he really hasn't proven that he's a quality coach.

Your last two paras are completely fair and reasonable. Nobody could be satisfied with how those finals campaigns have played out.

However, when it's so elementary to slam Chris Scott for his finals record through '12-'14, why is it that some detractors still feel the need to bring up his greatest achievement as evidence of how 'ordinary' he is?

Anyone who watched the acute embarrassment that was the 2010 PF was not seriously thinking we were any sort of show for 2011. 'Most coaches' would not have got us to the 2011 flag from that starting point.

Your argument has far more merit if you simply 'ignore' 2011. The inclusion of it as further evidence of Scott's inadequacies is clinching proof that you're simply reading every element of the evidence with only one subjective conclusion in mind.

Chris Scott may or may not make it as Cats coach in the long run. But the idea that 2011 will eventually be acknowledged as the first example of his mediocre coaching skills is plainly ridiculous.
