Granted the draft this year is compromised bec of the 17 yr olds GC took, but if we put that aside, in terms of pure numbers (number of picks and order of picks) the Blues are actually relatively well placed compared to most teams.
If you look at the number of and order of picks clubs have, we have 3 picks in the top 41, which is better than most other existing teams.
I know it's nothing compared to 2005 when we had 3 picks in the top 20, but in a year when it was always going to be tough to improve lists post season, and acknowledging we don't have a top 12 pick and therefore don't have access to the top top prospects, it's still some comfort to know we have 3 picks in the top 41 which is better than a lot of other clubs. Many clubs just have 2 picks in that range.
The other good thing, is through the trade period we added 2 young kids with good skills and potential, who have a few yrs under their belts and so are ready to step up straight away. Sure we lost 2 talented players, but le's face it Sauce was a ruck and we had a lot of them already so in some way it is not a great loss (esp with the new interchange rule). Grigg is a loss, but if he doesn't have the right attitude then I am happy to take the hit. (he seems to have a classic Gen Y attitude in my view).
We get 2 good kids with potential, plus 3 more in the top 41 in draft. It's not that bad really. (remember, we were never going to have it easy this post season).
Take a look at the link below and see how many picks other clubs have in the top 41, and you might find some comfort. Just a little.
I think the club should be congratulated for putting us in a position where we can add 5 good kids to the list. After all it is all about depth these days.
Key will be to use pick 18 wisely. Personally I'd be taking a KPP if a highly rated one was available, then I would be going mids with the other two picks inside 41, simply bec mids are more likely to make it than talls. And you can never have enough mids. And I think we have enough flankers as it stands.
