It is deplorable. What a joke.

I heard Hardwick in his Dissection video during the week explain why we wave our arms instead of tackling but seriously it's killing us.

We let players break our tackles almost every time and if that doesn't happen it's because we've just stuck a hand out instead

We need you at training with that giant emu beak mate, every time they miss a tackle whack em clean between the eyes with it. They wont miss tackles for long :)

Just looked back and in 2005 and I think 2011 we also had this exact thread. So in 10 years we still haven't fixed the issue :(

Been a major issue with us since the 80's.
I don't accept this bullshit - "it's not the number of tackles, it's where they are made".
No help making them on the Punt rd judo mats.
Effort and pressure results in tackles.... Not bullshit technique training.

Jake Kings retirement has left a huge hole in our forward line, Morris, Lloyd just simply don't do enough.. We need small forwards who can kick goals, and put on defensive pressure..

We need to have a mindset to be ferocious in defense as teams hunt us.
Its called Richmond envy.
Teams hate us so will put in extra.
We need to hate back.
Football isnt a beauty contest.

well they both only had 1 tackle each yesterday, lloyd only the 1 goal as well...

That's Loyds bad game and I will cop it. Lloyd will kick 30+ this year book it in. Not saying we don't need to upgrade him long term, but Lloyd is there to kick goals, where as Morris has no skill at all so the only role Dimma can justify giving him so he can play him is defensive fwd which he is ineffective as.

It seems to me when the grounds are slow we look alot better and stick our tackles more often.
When its the start of the season or in September our lack of pace shows up, Saturday reminded me of the Elim final the way we were being stepped around, especially in the backline with Batch/Grimes/Chaplin/Newman/Vlas all down there. Then through the midfield we have Grigg/Miles/Petterd/Martin, these types work well when the game slows down but the young quick dogs exploited our lack of pace on the faster April deck.

I still say have a tackling contest for the year, and the winner gets a prize. Aim for 1 tackle a quarter, that around 88 for the game. Now you wont get there but its a good target.

With regard to our tackling and the question on Dimma's dissection, I think the question was more along the lines of why do we corral? the opp instead of closing down the space and tackling, and the answer imo would be instead of closing down the space and being stepped around creating a loose man and a certain score, players corral the opp to force them to kick from that spot and back our setup further down field to win the 50/50 we forced them into using.

This theory has its obvious disadvantages/advantages, but is saying something about Dimma's attitude on the art of tackling and closing down space to force an error.

Bringing up an old thread cos its still a huge issue and its doing my head in honestly. So sick of seeing our players brushed aside so easily.. Is it a lack of trying? a poor attitude? A strength issue?

Do we need to bring up someone , a specialized coach or something to train tackling and only tackling?

Our top 5 tacklers:

Cotch - 54
Miles -54
Martin - 50
Grigg - 45
Lloyd - 35

Our highest tackler averages 4.9 a game.

aren't we 17th in the league for tackles? or last?

Just checked AFL tables and we are last for total tackles, could change though since 6 teams have had one more game than us.
