Our theme song

I agree with the colours part, I still would prefer a better song though.

Whats the highlight? 'See the bombers fly Up.. Up... to win the premiership flag"... whenever I watch the team sing the song most of em seem more embarrassed rather than to be singing it passionately... I don't think this is the case with some of the other teams...

I dont really see the need to have a highlight. Ours is not the best song but it is not bad. As far as the team singing with passion i have seen it sung with passion a lot of time. Depends on the win really. The song was sung with just as much passion as Geelongs after our 2000 GF win. If you want a song that struggles to have passion then try the Freo song.

FWIW I think Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Kangaroos, Richmond and St Kilda all have better songs than us.... considering most songs were ripped off anyway I don't see why changing it should be a problem... 100 years from now the new song will have tradition too...

I dont see how a few you have mentioned are any better than ours. Richmond yes. It is the best song. St.Kildas ony has four lines. Easy for footballers to remember. Norths is a good song but the lead in in so long that the players either have to chop it of or sing it really fast to get to the chorus. Hawthorns is ok but some of the lines are a little gay rather than inspiring. Being happy and loving your club is not all that inspiring the way it comes out in their song. Melbournes is ok and Geelongs is ok as well with the main bit that fires the players up being the first few lines "we are Geelong the greatest team of all"
I really dont know what you are saying when you say our blokes look embarresed to sing it. The passion is missing becasue we have not been a great side for a while so passionate wins have been few and far between. It was certainly sung with passion after the West Coast win in 2007 and also after the second round Carlton win last year. I ahve been in the rooms after a few wins and have heard the song sung with great passion. It all depends on the win and how the game went.
The problem with changing the song is most new songs end up like Warwick Capper 80's hits. Very ordinary.

I see your points... I know it won't be changed... just that there is absolutely nothing I like about our song at all and that reflects when the players sing it to singing it after the siren... just sayin..

I think your are keeping it unreal. There may be nothing you like about it but when we have a really good win and the players are pumped they sing it is passion.Like all sides you dont always pump out an exciting song after a game. I have seen the Richmond song look flat on TV at time as well. I think what you are reading into it is rubbish but then by the sounds of it you have only seen the song played on TV after the game a few times and not been in the rooms after a good win.

I think it is hilarious how grown men, after smashing blokes on the field, get together and sing barber shop raga's like jolly good chaps. But that's a completely different discussion...
I think our song is a great song and you'd be crazy to change it. I love hearing it because when it's being played, it means we have just won. How can you complain about that?

I have an English mate who thinks exactly the same way. He is also perplexed as to why the teams run through crate paper at the beginning of the game.

when you simplifier it like that, it does sound ridiculous! But it is such a unique (and great) tradition of our game, and i can't imagine not having either of them.

Its lame but guess what

"Watch the Bombers fly up up to win another premiership flag"

There are some good theme songs and something I have noticed and I'm wondering has anyone else noticed but its a short song compared to some other club songs

It does not need changing

It's not the best club song in the league but there's how many years of history behind it. I wouldn't change it for the world.
Agreed. It would just seem wrong to sing another song after a great win.

To those of you that don't like it/want it changed, it could be worse. We could have Fremantles (soon to be old) club song

A local footy team I know of sing:

There's a track winding back
To the good old red & black.....

But I agree no need to change the song.

I love Essendon as much as the next bloke and I understand the importance of tradition... BUT

Our theme song needs to change.

It sucks... its like its for the kids... it's hard to be passionate and sing that song..

Don't get me wrong, Ive sung the song many times, during the 93 finals, 2000 and all the great moments but its crap in comparison to other teams songs...

Listening to the whole crowd at Geelong sing their anthem during the VFL grand final was truly a great moment for them. Richmond, hawthorn, most sides have a song that you can get into more than ours.

I'm not trying to start a war with tradition buffs, I understand your perspective, just stating that I'd love for it to be updated.

Anyone else feeling me on this?

Very disappointing,
and in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with our song.

With so many changes in the AFL today, I think it's important that clubs stick to traditions.

For those curious where the current songs came from:

http://mm.afl.com.au/afl_heritage/songs_history.htm

Here is the year of all AFL Victorian clubs songs date of birth:

Carlton - early 1930's
Collingwood - 1906 (oldest)
Essendon - 1960's ( I wonder what they used before that?)
Fitzroy/Brisbane - 1955 (ironically written after a trip from Brisbane)
Footscray/Western - no-one is sure but before the 1940's
Geelong - 1963 (before they had a blended version of NM and Melbourne)
Hawthorn - 1956
Melbourne - 1912 (although their could be evidence as way back to the 1870's).
North Melbourne - 1920's (even used by Victorian State Side)
Richmond - 1962 (replacing Waltzing Matilda)
South Melbourne/Sydney - sometime after 1940 (they tried changing it to Up there for Sydney briefly when they became Sydney, but went back to the SM one)
St.Kilda - 1965 or 1966

Hope this works!!
