Out Berry In Roach

Surely peter roach has just hammered the final nail in darren berrys first class cricket career, Roach a very good keeper and a fine batsmen has been smashing at the door for years after getting some first class experience a couple of years back. I would not be surprised to see Roach play out the rest of the season and if he gets to play all of next year he may leap frog the other keepers to be next in line for the aussie team. Big call i know, but he has the potential.

It's time for Roach to become the regular wicketkeeper.Berry has been a great player,but he's getting on in years and his batting is worse than Glenn McGrath's.

This would mean Brad Hodge would have to take over as captain [when Warne's away].

I still believe that keeping should be the main criteria for selection.

Whilst Roach is a better batsman (Berry isn't THAT bad), Berry is clearly the better keeper.

Anyway, Chuck is back in the one-day team today, so i think that's a fair sign of what will happen when the next 4 day game comes around.

Berry is the best keeper in the land BUT cant make a run (dont know why, I thought he was always a more than competent batsman) its a very tough decision. What about Croswaite (sp) by all reports he looks the goods or is he not up to first class standard yet

Yes, but the same selectors picked Roach for the most recent game because they wanted a bit more experience for such an important contest.

Has anybody considered there might be room for both Berry and Roach in the same side? Berry as the keeper, Roach as a number 5/6 batsman. A few of the batsmen used as fill-ins over the last couple of years have been short of the mark, whereas Roach has done well with limited opportunities, including yesterday's century.

Surely the captain will return from suspension but at the same time how can you drop a bloke fresh off a hundred, when the same captain averages about 20? Solution : play them both and drop Hussey or Rummans.

Open the batting with Elliott and Arnberger.

Then:

Roach

Berry

That lineup looks significantly better without Rummans at 3. Obviously Hookes thinks that his dour nature is needed given the more flighty batsman coming in from 4 onwards (Hodge, Moss and Chuck). but still, i think Matthew Mott is the better option at 3.
He is capable of playing Rummans role, but unlike Rummans, he can actually score quickly when needed.

I thought Berry was impressive in his comeback match today, considering the embarassing nature of his suspension and how well Roach did, the pressure was on as a keeper and as a captain.

And he delivered on both counts - it was good to see a captain for once not let the pressure off during the middle overs and let the batsmen get easy singles. Keeping fielders inside the circle was one of the reasons why a very talented NSW batting lineup could never break free until the last couple of overs.

The only mistake he made with his captaincy was that he probably kept Cameron White on too long at the end by an over or two.

And his keeping was very good too - his leg-stumping of Mark Waugh was something he has become expert at over the years and he did well to take a ball that had bounced off the dirt just in front of him and effect a run-out late in the NSW innings.

Anyone remember what happened last time Roach took Berry place in the Victoria side around 1995 or 1996. There was a big blew in the Vics Team. Berry and Merv Hugles blewing with Dean Jones who was captain and Les Stillman who was the coach. What was to happened, Dean Jones never played agiain after that season, Stilman never did not coach Victoria again, Hugles goes and play for Canberrra, Berry still playing for Victoria.

there has been talk of Roach batting in the top six for victoria, seems a waste though, when you could have him keeping, Berry is a very good keeper, but his batting is inconsisten, Roach at 28 is moving into the peak period of his career, has scored in 12 innings 4 50s and 1 hundred. Shows great potential with the bat.

Another point is there has been talk of berry being the best gloveman in australia, obviously you have not seen Wade Seccombe keep, ithink you would find that many pundits would rate him as close to the best gloveman every to play first class cricket in this country. How many shield victories have victoria had with Berry behind the stumps, he has had his day, now he should move over and let someone new have a go to change vics fortune, very similar to the Healy / Gilchrist scenario, just not on an international stage, check the grade averages Roach is up towards the top of them.

Rod Marsh rates Berry as the best keeper going around and has for some time.Not one keeper I have seen can do the things Berry can do behind the stumps.Pretty sure Berry has the dismissals record or something aswell.

Seccombe has a pretty tough time, generally keeping to four medium pacers. Berry is the best keeper to both spin and pace by a long way. I've seen a few of Seccombes matches and he is good, but he could never do some of the things that Berry does.

Some of his leg side stumpings off the quick bowlers are unbelievable, and he rarely drops a catch. If he could bat he would be an Australian player, but that is not to be as his batting is erratic and too cavalier and of a low standard.

I admit to my mistake about Roach and how many innings he has batted in, in my excitement i put down the amount of first class games he has played. I believe Berry is a very talented keeper, i was lucky enough that during my years of being a uni student we had optus vision at my house, now being a cricket fanatic i loved it when i got to watch sheffield shield matches, now i have seen a lot of Berry and a lot of Seccombe, Berry is an extremely good keeper, i rate him number two with the gloves, but Seccombes keeping is out of this world, the diving catches he takes on gabba green tops, his keeping up to the wicket to adam dale, his glovework is immaculate. I guess qlders will always say seccombe and vics will always say Berry, qlders will always say symonds and vics will always say Harvey. It is just the way we all are.
