The Dutchman

I dont understand your reference to Jerka Jenkin. I dont know how he played at Essendon but whilst at Collingwood he was a very good player. He was always able to mix it with Big Nick. As for Don McKenzie, McKenzie was always a dirty player but Jerka always beat him.

Please elaborate.

Good pick up Magpie Greg

Jenka Jenkins was a fair player - my reference was only intended to stretch to his performance in one famous final... ie:
both Jerka and Athorn provided the springboards (so to speak) for fabulous and memorable performances when it counted by Messrs Jezza & Longie.

Probably a bit rough on Jerka but he really is remembered more for being "the back on which Jezza jumped" than anything else.. and Athorn is only remembered (at all) by bomber fans who remember Long making him look particularly stupid (didn't need help with his haircut that day mind) in the 93 GF.

Dutch

At the start of this year no 'experts' tipped the Cats for the finals and some tipped 'em for the wooden spoon. So I figure that makes them under-rated. As for Ben Graham - he's a great team player and leader and recieves due praise. Leigh Colbert is defficient as a player and an ethical being - he ought to be ashamed of himself. James Hird overrated? that's crazy talk.

The bulldogs midfield is the most overated in the league. I always hear commentators going on about how opposition teams will struggle to cope. The disposal efficiency of blokes like Romero, Dimatina, Libba and even West (sometimes) is a joke. In reply to the criticism of Grant, he has "won" a brownlow, and came second on a another occasion, and can only be as good as his teamates and coach allow him to be. If he was at Essendon or Carlton, he would be a superstar.
Overated: Hudson, Smith, West.
Underated: NATHAN BROWN, Kingsley Hunter, Nathan Eagleton, Simon Garlick

Tredrea is the most overated overhyped player
going around, all his hype is based on one game where he took 18 marks and kicked a bag of goals but has done nothing since.
The two most underated key players are Hardwick and Ratten..Hardwick is a hard nut who provides a bit of toughness in a skillful
but passive team and is a real on field leader how many times do you see barnes and alessio sticking up for their mates when the rough stuff starts..not often..unlike Hardwick who always puts himself in for his mates...
Ratten is the best onballer in the comp..Harvey may have won brownlows,Knights,Cousins, etc are flashy but Ratten never makes a mistake, never shirks an issue and never seems to waste a kick or handball but its always Kouta,Camperoale who get the glory .
For my own club the Roos the two most overated players are Grant and Archer..the underated..Blakey and Brent Harvey

Archer? Over-rated? No way. His 2000 season may not be up to his usual standards, but this man in form will make a great difference to our defence.

Agree with you on Grant though. I just wonder if people have over-rated his skills or if he's just not putting them to full use.

As for under-rated Roos, I reckon that Shane Clayton is one player that is sneaking under most people's guards. His disposal can still be ordinary, but he always seems to find space on the wings....he's becoming a good link player.

I think it is hard to tell if Brent Harvey is underrated or not. Sure, he is a good goal sneek and he is a good kick off the boot but is he consistent week in week out?

This is a great thread.

Good honest debate with a minimum of sledging.

I agree Tredrea is overated by the media but I don't think the supporters overate him. We all know he can mark but he must learn to be tougher and of course learn how to kick.

John Hay: I have already said he is a good player but just a baby really in career terms. I said if he keeps this form up for a few more years then he will deserve these accolades he is receiving.

Barney, spot on except for Archer. Also i think all non Carlton supporters rate Ratten very highly.

There is hope for all the players you have all nominated as being over-rated, until this year Kouta would have to have been the greatest over-rated player going around, and to his credit he has turned it all around in one season and will no doubt come close to winning the Brownlow this year.

St Kilda over-rated - noway. Under achievers, definitely given the playing list they had in the early 90's.

Glen Archer over-rated, well I wish I had him in my team in form or not.

My under-raters include: Simon Goodwin (Adelaide); Dustin Fletcher (Essendon); Marcus Ashcroft (Lions);

I am not sure if Adelaide are over-rated or under-rated but they are definatly over-hated

Although Wayne Carey is an utter champion he is not a 4 quater player he does his bit for the majority and what he does with the ball is magic..

as there are too many players to mention I will keep my focus on the Adelaide Crows :

UNDER-RATED Robran,Crowell,Perrie,Gallager,McGregor

OVER-RATED
Connell (however I tend to disagree with it also) was my only pick

Who said Basset and Edwards were under-rated I had the asumption they were quality players without a doubt so that is why I did not mention them..

They are always talked about real well by comentators..

but the Jarmans, McLeods and Rehns are always going to steal the limelite !!

I hummed and haaaed about galleger but if you watch hime he always try's his best and gets in under the packs etc..

I love Mark Riccuto because he is another champion but he would be giving away disposals to the opposition more than gallager at the moment and he is 5th favorate for the brownlow ???

On the topic of David Gallagher's deficiencies, the aspect of his game I am most critical of is his tendency to hang on to the ball for too long. On countless occasions I have my heart in my mouth watching him take possession and either get tackled or come extremely close to it by not disposing of the ball soon enough.

This could be simply a matter of adjusting to the faster pace of the AFL, where there is less time to react. Whatever the case, he still seems like a promising player.

If you want to focus on the crows the most underrated player is Goodwin, I Watched him play against the eagles the other night and he was sensational to watch, I had hardly heard his name before and there he was standing tall (when all the other crows were in hiding) and kicking goals. The Most Over rated Player is Rehn He Should take a pay cut for wasted time out with injury.

Melbourne would have to be the most underrated side.. they've shown their worth and stood tall where other clubs have failed this season yet still get bugger all attention while some fools sit around n try to say Brisbane still have a technical chance of making the 4.. it's 2000 not 1999

In relation to GOCATSGO's comments though I feel I must point out a) Jarrod Molloy was dubbed the D9 by Sandy.. not himself and the name stuck with the other commentators & b) Jason Akermanis's handstands are playing up to the cheersquad and just a celebratory muck around.. personally I thinK it's decent that in the day of professional athleticism the guy still takes time out to have a bit of a play up with the fans.

The Eagles as a club have been overated for years. Hopefully that inflated expectation will subside after this years performance. Does it seem wierd to anyone else that we'll not be in the finals?

From a WC point of view....

Overated- Gehrig, Peter Matera, Phil Matera, Jason Ball -what a star he's been for Sydney!
wink.gif
, and somewhat controversially Ben Cousins (excellent player, but won't be a superstar til his disposal improves, the number of times he pinpoints an opposition player is phenomenal -although I guess that is a skill in itself
smile.gif
), Ken Judge. On this season alone Mitchell White.

Underated- Drew Banfield, Drew Banfield, Drew Banfield! Dean Kemp, previously Chris Waterman, Ash McIntosh, Daniel Metropolis, and more off-field Scotty Cummings.

Shane Parker for Freo has been underated, but I think other clubs are now realising his worth.

Whoever said Glen Jakovich was overated, well done. How can you be overated when you haven't even been rated in half a decade? Thankfully he looks to be getting back some form, but any praise he receives is always based on his early to mid '90's form, not present.

The jury is still out on Jason Ball eagle_fan

After being close to best on ground for Sydney Vs West Coast in Round 2, he did his ankle late in that game and has never been 100 % since.

We'll see what he is like when fully fit again (next season) - but yeah, if he dosn't step up then you would have to suggest that he is just another 'Sydney dud purchase'

cheers

The Eagles are overrated and have been for a long time. They should have won a lot more with the team that they have had as should have Essendon, although they are doing the job this year. But 93-99.hhmmmmm...
Dean Kemp is one of the biggest underrated footballers around and his skills are the best in the league. Same with Ratten and also agree that Shane Parker is highly underrated. Scott West is also underrated and is amongst the Bulldogs best.
Kellaway is also very good and although I hate Essendon James hird is definitely not overrated. He is all class.
McKernan is overrated although he did play on the weekend but dont see it enough along with Tredrea and Gehrig.

Eagle_Fan,
Metropolis is not under rated, he is hopeless three times he kicked out to a contest with adelaide winning the ball in the last quarter three times it resulted in a goal to the crows, how much more proff do you need, even fraser gehrig kicked out and pinpointed players but metropolis could not!

overrated teams
Essendon
(so they have won 19 straight, big deal. If you combine Adelaides wins for the last 2 years we are only 2 short of 19)

Carlton
(Luckiest 13 straight in history. Do they ever play anywhere other than Optus? Nice jumpers though)

Kangaroos
(1 man team. Couldn't win a chook raffel without Jason "the King" McCartney.)

Melbourne
(Only winning because the opposition coaches can't pronounce names like Yze, Woewodin & Grigic)

Bulldogs
(Too nice. Need to get dirtier on the field. Maybe they should try some eye gouging or verbal abuse)

Geelong
(Resting on the laurals of their previous successes.)

Richmond
(had a lucky run with injuries. If a couple of their stars go down they will be in big trouble)

Brisbane
(not enough self belief. probably need to complain about other teams more often)

Underrated teams

Adelaide
(If we dont win the premiership this year then the whole thing is rigged.)

Hawthorn
(Most underrated goal to goal line in the league)

West Coast
(Team of young stars)

Sydney
(even team that does not rely on the efforts of a few stars)

Freo
(Who?)

Collingwood
(Quietly going about their buisness. Rebuilding without a lot of hype & fanfar)

Port
(Team of underrated champions like ???? you know, that guy the hair & the bloke with the big nose)

St Kilda
(a good coach, backed to the hilt by his players who always repay their supporters for their loyalty)

Overrated players
Carey (cant run kick mark or handball)

Hird (even worse than Carey)

Koutafesr, er Koutyfeaw, er Couterfeed er you know that greek guy who plays for Carlton (don't know how he gets a game)

Buckley (went to Collingwood cause he knew he wouldn't get a game in Brisbane)

Underrated players
Jason McCartney (Mr Football)
Glen Manton (Mrs Football)
David Calthorpe (pace to burn)
James Cook (hardest worker in the game)
Pie Cart (bloke who played full forward for the Norwood Districts a7's)

Hey Drakey!!!

I remember that Pie Cart bloke. He kicked eleventeen goals on our man Blue Balls last year at Brahma Lodge. Blue Balls kicked seven himself though from full back so i don't know which one was more under rated.
