A New South Welshman, Andrew Bomford began his AFL playing days with the Sydney Swans, playing as a top-up player in their reserves team from 1994-1996 and playing 79 games in that time. He had received the attention of the Swans while playing for the North Shore (read p.4 here), who have a black guernsey with a red sash(!). After three years, he was drafted by Essendon with pick 25 in the 1996 AFL draft, which was a compensation pick for the loss of Gavin Wanganeen.
Playing predominantly between midfield and defence, Bomford did well enough in his first game with 16 disposals and a goal, but was less impressive the week after and got only one more game in his first season. He started better in 1998, with a career high 25 disposals and a goal in round 3, but had a shocker against Fremantle in the next game, and never returned to that early form. He was traded to Sydney at the end of 1998, where he repeated his form the next year, started out well and declining as the year went on. He was delisted at the end of 2000 and returned to North Shore, where he was named on the bench in their team of the century in 2003.
