Andrew Bomford

C4Rf42A.jpg

DOB: 19/07/1974

Height: 184 cm

Weight: 89 kg

Playing number: 28

Arrived: Drafted with pick 25 in the 1996 AFL draft

Debut: Round 3 vs North Melbourne, 1997

Games: 13

Goals: 5

Departed: Traded to Sydney at the end of 1998

A New South Welshman, Andrew Bomford began his AFL playing days with the Sydney Swans, playing as a top-up player in their reserves team from 1994-1996 and playing 79 games in that time. He had received the attention of the Swans while playing for the North Shore (read p.4 here), who have a black guernsey with a red sash(!). After three years, he was drafted by Essendon with pick 25 in the 1996 AFL draft, which was a compensation pick for the loss of Gavin Wanganeen.

Playing predominantly between midfield and defence, Bomford did well enough in his first game with 16 disposals and a goal, but was less impressive the week after and got only one more game in his first season. He started better in 1998, with a career high 25 disposals and a goal in round 3, but had a shocker against Fremantle in the next game, and never returned to that early form. He was traded to Sydney at the end of 1998, where he repeated his form the next year, started out well and declining as the year went on. He was delisted at the end of 2000 and returned to North Shore, where he was named on the bench in their team of the century in 2003.

Ah!

Good to see these threads back, The Speaker.

I have only very faint memories of Bomford though.

I stumbled across my notepad file with the randomised list of players, figured I might as well continue. There'll probably be a six week break in them from mid-November though, so I have no idea why I chose to start now.

But here we are. Will have to add in a bunch of players that we've lost since I did this list.

No better time than the off-season for them.

I must admit if you'd asked me when Bomford played for us off the bat, I'd have actually said maybe two years earlier than this. I do remember being at Sydney too.

I remember going to Waverly with my old man back in the 70's, actually played Sydney, I'm 60, but remember a bloke Starbuck playing, the only name I remembered from the game,

As a kid I remember watching Essendon train and there was one player behind the main group bouncing the ball on his own and it keep going everywhere. His skills were very ordinary.

Plus I believe he trained wearing thick black glasses. This was Bomford right?

Bomber Bomford as my mates & I used to call him!

Remember him as an honest toiler circa 97-98 as an onballer. Had some good moments in a period where we struggled in 97, but dropped off the radar as we began to build into a good side late 98, as others began to establish themselves in the side.

Only faint memories of Bomford, probably reflective of his career. He came to the club when we were supposedly on the way up (prelim in '96) but we then went backwards before becoming a very good side. It's no surprise he was at the club in those couple of seasons as he would've struggled to get a game before or after.

Can't say I remember this bloke too much, apart from getting him confused with Justin Blumfield as a kid. Surprised he only play 13 games with us though.
