Re: New Player - Phil Davis

it's easy, find him a sanfl club that is willing to play him forward

he is a crows player and the club needs to protect it's investment, if that means players changing clubs then it needs to be considered

on a positive, I am sure Healy will be open minded

Not always that easy of course - I'm sure they would prefer not to go down that route, and besides, I'm sure Davis feels a sense of loyalty to North, being that he was recruited off his form playing with them.

Still, if he doesn't play forward, I hope you end up right :p

regardless of the lads loyalty he is now a crows player

I agree it is not the ideal course of action, however having our list playing for 9 sanfl clubs with 9 senior coaches with their own self interests and agendas is also not ideal

I have full confidence in Alan Stewart working closely with the sanfl clubs, in specific to the NAFC their is a already built relationship between Daniel and Alan going back to the late 90's, so hopefully Davis is in a good place.

However my point is, whether it is Davis, Sellar or Yound, these players were drafted aligned to a specific strategy with a specific role in mind, ideally if we had a reserve side in the sanfl Dacis could play CHF all year and develop into that role no matter what the score baord reads.

However it makes it difficult for the club when they draed a player to develop into a specific role to fill a need and a sanfl club continues to play the player in a different role, this situation puts both the player and club at risk and if the situation can't be resolved through working together then the club may need to look at alternative options

But like I said, I am confident Heals and Stewy will not have these issues

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

^^

Pretty sure Matt Rendell saw his preferred position as a key back when he drafted him. He made some comment about looking forward to seeing him Vs Jack Watts for years to come. We know based on his reserves and U17s performances that he is capable as a forrward, but he has played a good deal of his footy down back. That said, the AFC needs to respect the SANFL's integrity and the inegrity of the clubs within that competition. Those clubs need to recognise their repsonsbility to the player. Only where a player is being used in such a way that it is determental to his development should the club kick up a fuss.

Davis is two games back from a major shoulder injury, its the pre-season, i'm sure the AFC are just interested in getting him back playing footy at this stage.

Five minutes with Phil Davis

Now more than six months into his first year at an AFL club, talented tall Phil Davis believes he has found his feet.

Taken at pick 10 in a draft touted as a ‘super draft’ for key position players, Recruiting Manager Matt Rendell was keen to get Davis to Adelaide after strong performances at the 2008 National Championships and in the SANFL for North Adelaide.

A shoulder injury sidelined him though for a majority of the season, which Rendell believes may have helped him fly under the radar and to the Crows.

After a limited pre-season Davis is again featuring in North Adelaide’s league side, where on the weekend he collected 17 disposals in their win over West Adelaide.

afc.com.au caught up with the boy from St Peters College about the transition from schoolboy to AFL footballer, the early stages of his development and the pressures of being a first round draft pick.

What have your first six months been like?

“At first it was a bit of a shock to the system, the workload that I haven’t been previously exposed to and trying to get my body through the pre-season. I was sort of unlucky but lucky in a way that I was in rehab so I didn’t have to do the whole pre-season like the other boys did. So the body wasn’t in a position where it could have broken down so that was lucky in a way. Now I feel like I can be more on top of it. I feel better with my fitness, strength and injury prevention and all the little things that I feel I’ve come a long way since I first got here. I’m getting stronger and my shoulder is feeling a lot better and I’m really enjoying it at the moment.”

How have you and the club approached your development in these early stages?

“With the shoulder it was about getting it right. Over pre-season we took probably an extra month to make sure it recovered properly, there were no short cuts. As far as my development in general I think because I missed a fair bit of footy last year the club really just wanted to me get back out in the SANFL and play some footy again in the highest grade I could. I’ve been playing with North Adelaide’s league side which has been great. Now I’m trying to take my game to another level at the moment. I’ve had good mentoring from Ben Rutten and Alan Stewart every week and all the development guys at the club are great. I always get tips here and there on how to improve my game. There’s a big emphasis from everyone else on what I can do to better my performance.

“With Ben Rutten I do a lot of aerial work, body work and learn about structures. Having being playing in defence he has been great with my development there. He has helped me with my kick. I catch up with him every week to look at my tape and he talks with me about how I am going and just generally structures in the backline that I need to know, its really good to have that feedback. Off field he helps a lot too. Especially with someone like Ben and his experience and credibility I’ve been able to learn a lot from him so hopefully I can continue to learn more off him in the future.”

Happy with your progress?

“I think with where I came from last year, not playing a lot of footy, I have done well. My first league game back at the Roosters was pretty average and I needed some steady improvement and I think I’ve done that so I’m happy with where I am at the moment. Hopefully I can continue to take my game to the next level and down the track if my form warrants the selectors to pick me then that would be great.”

You have the ability to play forward and back. Do you have a preference and where do you think you can play your best footy?

“Yeah that’s a tough one. At the moment I don’t worry where I am playing I’m just trying to get a game. At North Adelaide I’m playing in defence and enjoying the role, but if they asked me to go up forward I’d be more than happy to do that. In the future I’m not too sure, I do enjoy leading up at the ball in the forward lines and I do enjoy creating a bit of play from defence so I guess it’s really where the coaches think I’m best suited. I’m not overly fussed, I enjoy playing at both ends.

Being a high draft pick did you feel any expectation? Was it tough?

“It was a little difficult but mostly the expectation came from me rather than any external pressure. I wanted to be right up there and create a good impression early so I wanted to have a strong pre-season and prove that I was worth that early pick. So I guess it’s been a bit slow in that regard with my injury and getting to where I wanted to be. There was some frustration but I knew had to be patient. I am happy with where I am at the moment though.

“Sometimes with a top ten draft pick there is a lot of expectation from the public. I know Patrick (Dangerfield) copped a bit last year but when I came to the club Neil Craig was great and he said there are no limitations on what I could do. It was just about doing as much as I could and performing as well as I could. Again it was more so putting pressure on myself rather than from other people; I’m getting better at it and just trying to focus on my development.”

You’re a smart man and you did very well at school, are you doing any study?

“I’ve decided to have a year off study and concentrate on my footy. Moving into a new lifestyle of an AFL footballer you don’t get a lot of free time so I’m thinking maybe next year I’ll try and knock off a bit of study and maybe do a subject a semester at uni. So hopefully if I can gradually knock off a subject each semester I’ll have a degree near the end of my career!”

Was it a bit of a shock going from school to life as an AFL footballer?

“It is actually. You go from having a very unprofessional lifestyle so to speak. At an AFL club you have to be at everything on time, get your body up each week and be physically prepared. You’ve got to make sure your doing everything right. At school you still do have a timetable and a good workload but the professionalism at the football club is very high. In terms of time management it is different. It is pretty structured at school but you have a lot of responsibility as an AFL footballer so you have to get used to that. I guess if you want to succeed as an AFL footballer there is a lot of individual responsibility to go the right way about it. You get to be very independent but you have to take a lot of initiative.”

When you do get down time what do you like to do away from footy?

“When I do get it I usually sleep! I try and catch up with my school mates a fair bit and also the boys here at the club. I spend a bit of time with my girlfriend as well. I have a hit of golf when I can as well, I’m not that good but I have a go. Been doing a bit of ten pin bowling lately that’s good fun. But I don’t really have a hobby I just try and relax and see my mates.”

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Why are people so worried about where he plays? He's only just starting to perform in the SANFL let alone being considered to debut. We have so many key position prospects at the moment that look like they will end up as good to great AFL players. It's a great thing really. If Davis comes in next year to play as the 3rd tall in defense to release Otten to the midfield I'd be very, very happy. McKernan could turn out to be a Ruck/Forward Line pinch hitter as well. Could be very exciting next year at our club.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Pissed off they stopped showing SANFL games on Fox over here, they were always a treat, regardless of what rediculous time they were on.

What . Too bad for you.

well, you can contact the SANFL and get a DVD of each game if you are truely keen (NON-ABC games only)

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Thought of another reason why he should be included.

Reason 8)
He knows the crows strategy and gameplan, probably better than Neil craig himself.

During preason the crows players sat a strategy test. Goodwin, the captain of the club, who has been there for 16 years, scored 86%. Phil Davis scored 100%.

After scoring something like 99% in his HSC, he obviously has an intelect to match VBs.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Reidy said a few interesting things about Davis on 5aa, a quick summary:
-Thinks he'll probably reach 197cm
-Moves extremely well for a bloke that size
-One of his big strengths is his composure and ability to read the play
-Great contested grab
-Has really progressed well this year in the SANFL and complemented North on their handling of Phil

Then one of Rowe/Cornes summed up that he'll be a great defender for us in the future and tried to move onto our ruck combo Reidy deliberately stopped them in their tracks to say that he thinks Davis could also become a great forward, to the point that he said he though Davis was probably more likely to be a forward at the Crows, rather than a defender.

That's an exciting summary! I wonder if Davis will get the "Otten treatment", playing in defence while learning to deal with AFL footy before moving to the preferred position for the club.

Strange that Davis would grow another couple of centimetres, aren't guys usually finished growing by 18? I assume they have some scientific reason for thinking so.

Well he was 196cm when drafted, so it's nothing out of the ordinary if he grows an extra centimeter or two, its girls who tend to stop growing earlier, some blokes don't stop growing till they reach 21 even.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Davis has bigger hair than it appears too, don't forget ;)

I thought he was 195cm when he was drafted, it's McKernan that was 196cm. Splitting hairs here though...

Sometimes guys grow until 21 but generally I thought for the large majority of guys the last growth spurt is during ages 16-18.

Growth spurt yes, but they can easily grab an extra centimeter or two once they're past their final growth spurt as such.

He's listed as 196cm by the Crows website, which was taken at the beginning of preseason, but yeah splitting hair's really.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Article on AFC.com.au about Davis being a real chance to debut this weekend if Burton doesn't come up.

Davis in line for an MCG debut

ADELAIDE could unveil its sixth debutant of the season, key position prospect Phil Davis, when it does battle with Hawthorn on Friday night at the MCG.

Davis has been close to selection for several weeks after performing well at both ends of the field for North Adelaide in the SANFL.

They also mention Hentschel and Sloane as potential starters.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

My sister in law spotted Davis doing some extra running/work out in a park at the end of sportsman drive yesterday. Perhaps he has been given the word he will be playing on the weekend and was working extra hard to prepare himself.

Cant wait to see him play.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Phil played his debut game for the Crows in Rd 4 2010, and played 15 games that season.

He won a Rising Star nomination in Rd 16, the Crow's stirring win against Geelong.

He injured his shoulder in Rd 3 2011, came back in Rd 6 and re-injured the shoulder, resulting in the need for surgery. He has been put on the Long Term Injury list on 19th May 2011 to make a spot on the main list for up-graded rookie Aidan Riley.
