That was really weird we actually loan Scarlett to South Melbourne half way through the 1977 season, and made it permanent in 78,imagin that happening today no way.
Loaning a player mid season was probably as weird as seeing players light up **** at the quarter time breaks, which used to happen in the 60's and 70's (and no doubt earlier). Seeing players light up cigarettes on the field obviously had a big impact on me, because I bring it up frequently!!

I can remember having a smoke at 1/2 time against my better judgment.
I held off on it for ages. Saw the captain doing it and thought "oh what the hell"

Smoking was still advertised as beneficial to your health in the 60's. Remember the ads at the movies!

I remember if I smoked Peter Styvesant's I would end up in Monte Carlo with hot girls all over me, lying on a 30 metre yacht in the sun.

Thankfully, I never took it up.
Benson & Hedges, when only the best will do??
What do you smoke to end up in the Swiss Alps?

I wonder if anyone can throw any light on Hugh Routley as a player - ( member of 63 premiership side)

I never saw him play - but what intrigued me - was Roger Wills - the guy who use to call the Crows home games at Football Park on the ABC radio - if someone had alot of bounces - old Roge use to throw in the line - i once saw Hugh Routley have 7 bounces at Kardinia Park !

Its amazing - these Geelong tragics - there all over Australia - and they all end up in the media

Hugh Routley…not a star but a serviceable player…I think #29 if I recall correctly. Smaller type…can't recall where he played…maybe on the opposite wing to Polinelli…..not sure if he's still around or not.

Yes, on the wing, no. 29, quick, smallish, stocky build, red hair?, not always a regular in the side, but played alright in the 63 GF as I remember.

I thought he had a better than alright game he and Hynes really stood up that day,you need that second tear of players to stand up in big games and those two boys did.And good morning Fred.

Good morning, agree on those two in the GF. Hynes shoulda done alright but, he was built like Wade.

Also, I was going to ask whether you noticed your mate Geoff Rosenow down in the goal square at the start of that clip.

Farmer Goggin Wade GOAL!
Was there ever a better combo?
Music to my ears Vdubs
Would be interesting to know Farmers hits/palms to advantage over his career. He and Goggin seemed to have a telepathy between them , so many attacking moves started from the two of them.
Different game then but one aspect I loved was watching guys like Goggin and Barry Price hitting up the leading FF with a bullet like low stab kick. Fantastic to watch that unfold with the FF leading hard and the Rover hitting them on the chest.

What do you long term Geelong supporters think of Dom Gleeson? Did he ever play at AFL level? I can't find much about him, other than he went on to coach + retired this year.

I remember having a huge crush on him lol But don't know much about his career.

Bobby_ posted a Menzel highlights video in the Menzel thread + this video came up on YTube afterwards -

Two questions -

1. the commentators discuss whether or not Ablett took the mark. I remember seeing Ablett spinning the ball on his middle finger + being rewarded a mark! I just loved how he could stop the ball with so little effort;

2. Wonder what happened to Chris Johnston, one of the trainers?

Ablett missed the goal and had bruised hip and back and buttocks for weeks after that mark. We were there and I was with a Pie fan and she swore it was a mark.

In the strict defenition it defenitely was a mark IMHO - the key aspect is control - if you study the footage he traps the ball , cradles it all the way to the ground - it only comes loose once he hits the ground.
I was in the FP that day and could see it unfold , you just knew he was going to do something special , those short muscle fibres really kicked in then - to leap onto Perts shoulder off half a step is an amazing display of powere and athleticism :thumbsu:

History has recorded it as MOTY, so can't argue against that.

Time to reminisce about other Geelong greats? I count David Clarke Snr, No.14, as one of the greats of the 70's which wasn't hard given it was probably our bleakest decade in terms of finals appearances. Clarke debuted in 1971 and immediately made a big impression winning the B&F in his first season. Has that ever happened at Geelong? Yes - Gary Ablett Snr in 1984.

Clarke went on to win 2 more B&F's, was a favourite for the Brownlow in 73 or 74(?), and will be remembered as a very classy and versatile utility / half forward flanker. He played taller than what his height - 184cm, 3 cm shorter than Jimmy Bartel!
