Re: Pat Garner

Don't aim low. He'll come back a new man a la JMac this year. ;)

The only thing is I didn't see enough of him before he was injured to see if i would prefer the old Garner back or a new version!

Re: Pat Garner

"To be eligible for [the rookie] draft, players must be under the age of 23 on December 31 to be a rookie."

So that means he could be potentially be a rookie for 3 years.

Re: Pat Garner

That's my understanding as well.

We can use one of our priority Qld picks on him though in the rookie draft.

After looking at the draft lists, I don't think we can use these on redraftees. Both Sydney and Brisbane re-drafted their own players as rookies (Sydney's was already a rookie), but neither used a priority pick on them (and we had them to burn).

Brisbane Lions gives Pat Garner second chance
Article from:
December 10, 2007 11:00pm

INJURY-plagued youngster Pat Garner has received a second chance from the Brisbane Lions in today's AFL Rookie Draft.
Garner, 20, was delisted by the Lions just last month after undergoing a second consecutive knee reconstruction.
However, Garner was thrown a lifeline when he was selected as pick No.23 by Brisbane today along with another injury-troubled rookie Phil Smith (No.7) and, as expected, Irishman Pearce Hanley (No.38).
Garner, a promising key position prospect, has been sidelined since the start of the 2006 season but is expected to make his return to the field early next year.

Re: Pat Garner

Thats great news for the young fella. I remember seeing him down at Sherwood, he always looked a likely type. I was very disappointed to hear of his rotten luck with injuries. Hopefully its all behind him and he gets back on track.

It would be great to see him one day makes his debut.

Go Patty!!

Pat's back on track

Lions key position prospect Pat Garner will play his first match of AFL in more than two years when he lines up for the Suncoast Lions against Labrador at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon at 3:20pm.

Garner has been given the green light by Lions physios to play against the Tigers in the AFLQ Velocity Sports Cup Round 2 match after a strenuous rehabilitation from two consecutive knee reconstructions.

Since being drafted to the club with selection No.27 in the 2004 AFL National Draft, Garner has endured a horror run with injuries.

He spent the bulk of his debut season at the club developing with the Lions’ reserves team before making his first official club appearance the following year in the NAB Cup competition.

The then teenager played valuable minutes against both Essendon and Melbourne during the pre-season competition, but fell victim to a knee injury in the final club practice match on the Gold Coast and required a full reconstruction.

After spending 12 months on the sidelines working closely with fellow casualty and team mate Richard Hadley, Garner returned to training at the beginning of the 2007 season – only to injure his knee once again in a seemingly harmless running drill.

Missing a second consecutive season through injury was a bitter pill for the young Queenslander to swallow, yet Garner persisted and remained determined to resume his football career.

Although little fanfare will be made of the Gabba curtain-raiser, it will mark an important occasion for the 21 year-old Lion rookie.

Re: Pat Garner

Are you serious? Amazes me how many posters comment how big some of our players arms are? Obviously many of you don't go to gyms where you will find AFL footballers are NOT big - and i am not talking about bodybuilders - but you are kidding yourself if that is what you think big is (same for Bradshaw):thumbsd:

Bradshaw's arms have been that big since he was 17, unlike gym junkies footballers focus on the whole package, i laugh when you see a bloke with a massive chest, massive arms and chicken legs. Footballers weight train with a purpose to play, if weights are you only go then you train to get bigger.

Lachlan Henderson and Pat Garner were controlling the key defensive posts. Garner’s kicking into the wind was a treat and he was clearly the most effective player on the ground by foot.
In his third game back from a second knee reconstruction, Garner was outstanding until limping off with an apparent hamstring strain late in the final term.

Good foot skills coming out of defence? Sounds like just the thing we need. Shame about the hammy.

It seems like 90% of knee recos lead to a hammy strain at some point in the recovery. Is it because the hammy hasn't been worked for 12 months or does the reconstructed knee affect the hamstring?

I think it's as much the loss of the natural balance between muscle groups -- quads might get slightly stronger lugging the lower leg and perhaps a brace around, but hammies and calves waste away a bit.

When they all start trying to work together again, the equlibirium that's been developing since you first walked, is not there any more.

Re: Pat Garner

I think I've become a supporter of Garner just on the basis that a guy who's had such bad luck needs a break at some point...

A mate of mine said he had ligaments or something taken from his hammy and used for the reco. He did his hammy a couple of times in the following year, once just getting out of the car

Re: Pat Garner

Elevate Pat Garner and Give him a game. :)
Knee reco players have been going great for us. Time for Pat to get a crack in our backline.

I wonder if this is what has happened with Bradshaw.
