this is the last thing he needed as he tries to establish himself as a senior player after being around for a couple of years.
why is it in most cases that when guys are beginning to make progress & get a glimmer of light that senior selection may be on the horizon, they get an injury setback & almost have to go back to square one. it just doesn't seem fair .... but I gues that's footy.

Goose set for NEAFL return
14 June 2013

Matt Maguire (shin) and Patrick Wearden (face) are also set for their on-field return. Maguire and Wearden are both expected to line up for the Lions Reserves in Saturday afternoon’s NEAFL clash with Labrador on the Gold Coast.

Wearden, meanwhile, has spent the past two months recovering from a crude hit against the Gold Coast Reserves back in Round 4 which left him with facial fractures. The second-year utility was in career-best form at the time, and will be keen to recapture that form in the second half of the season.

The injury inclusions, coupled with six omissions from the senior team, means that Reserves Coach Leigh Harding will have considerably more players at his disposal this weekend. “I think we had 11 changes heading into our last match against the Gold Coast, and we’ll probably have around 10 again for this Saturday’s game,” Harding told lions.com.au.

“Patrick Wearden and Matt Maguire both got through training on Wednesday and should give us a boost. “Patty’s probably been ready to go for a little bit, but we decided to wait until after the Bye to ensure he’d fully recovered. So I’m confident that he can get through a full game after an extended lay-off.”

The first encounter between the two sides at Metricon Stadium was particularly fiery, with Patrick Wearden being king-hit by a SUNS opponent and suffering serious facial injuries which kept him sidelined for two months.

“It will be the first time Patty has played against them (since the incident), and maybe Cal as well,” Harding said.

Anyone heard anything about how the club rates him? Would love him to at least be on the rookie list as he came to the club quite raw. Looks KP size now. Could be a handy third tall.

Haven't heard anything about how the club rate him, but he was very very raw when we picked him up and the club would know that. I think he could become a nice wing man or third tall up forward at the next level. Always loved this kid.

Yep he has filled out quite nicely and has some talent. I for one would like to see him retained on the senior list.

2013 Review - by Matt_BL

Patrick Wearden enters 2014 as probably the biggest unknown quantity on the senior list. Initially taken at Pick 47 in the 2011 AFL Draft, Wearden hails from Country Victoria and was taken as a more speculative pick with the belief that if a player like himself was in the AFL system full time it would see a greater development and become a quality player. As avid draft watchers have pointed out, at 191cm but a lighter frame Wearden is the classic build that the Lions have been targeting in the ’10, ’11 and ’12 drafts so far with a small number of players falling under the 187cm mark as pointed out by Quigley. Why this is may be due to the mantra of ‘running height’ although it may change under new coach Justin Leppitsch for 2013.

Considering Wearden has not yet played a senior game in two seasons, along with the departures of the ‘Go Home 5’ it’s likely we’ll see Wearden get senior game time in 2014. During the year Wearden suffered a broken jaw after being king hit by a Gold Coast Suns players during one of the NEAFL Q-Clashes earlier in the season. At this level, Wearden has played predominately in defence, with statistically his best game coming in the NEAFL Semi Final with 28 possessions and 10 marks. It may be that Wearden takes on the role that Elliot Yeo has left vacant, and it will work well that half back flankers are an area of high competition which will mean players in that spot will have earnt it.
Durability should be a key focus for Wearden in the pre season, as he has a lighter frame with most sources indicating a weight of 76kg, however he is likely to weigh more at seasons end. At pre season in Arizona will help not only with fitness but strength and adding some size to his frame. The 120 interchange cap will also have some effect, so players will need to be fitter than ever to compete for four quarters.

It was interesting to note at the latest list management Banfield was delisted over Wearden so it is clear that the coaches must value his spot on this list compared to then more AFL proven, but out of form Banfield.

Overall it’s been very limited for Wearden for AFL opportunity thus far so hopefully next year Wearden’s review and frame, will have a lot more meat on the bones.

Reviewers Tip: 10-15 AFL matches

Very unlucky for Patty. His AFL career could be in jeopardy now. Hopefully he will bounce back.

Really hope he can finish the year strongly and show what he can do. Seems to have shown some great signs lately, would hate for this injury to impact his career and chances of being kept on the list.
