I remember reading when we traded for him that he was all set to go to Carlton before we made a last minute pitch.

Absolute rubbish, his trade was one of the first to go through of the 40 odd trades during that trade period.

We had both Marchbank and Pickett nominate us early in the piece, and we used mid-late picks (plus a first rounder) to acquire both of these guys.

Got any source indicating we were keen?

EDIT - just had a big look. There’s absolutely nothing.

From the AFL site: "To be eligible for the AFL Rising Star Award, each year's nominated players must be under the age of 21 at 1 January and have played no more than 10 AFL games to the start of that season."

So its awarded to a standout young player. A player who turns 21 on 31 December of the previous year is ineligible despite being 'young'. A player who may be a stand out but who does not get nominated during the H&A is ineligible. Hasn't happened yet, but it could.

What's wrong with:
A) Rising Star (Under 21)
B) Rising Star (Over 21)
Both classes of players must still have played less than 10 games and never been suspended during the season??
Because who the **** cares? Your B) for players over 21 they won’t even get 22 eligible players

Nah

He’s played half a good season and it’s a thread on the main board ...ffs give it rest .

Get your head out of the salt mine and have some perspective here, you can't name me a player who's played less than 10 games having the impact he's had after TWO knee recos.

Give yourself a rest, you're whining everywhere at the moment, doesn't take keen eyes to see it.

Looks like he could end up in the Cripps/Oliver bracket given he is absolutely nowhere near AFL fit at the moment, he probably has the scope to lose 4-5kg's over the next pre-season, which is a scary proposition moving forward given how easy he wins the ball at the moment.

Like most aboriginal midfielders, he plays with that 6th sense, he's super creative with the ball in hand and an excellent kick. As was mentioned by David King during the game on Sunday, he's a kicking ball winning midfielder, which is a bit rarer.

As has already been said in this thread, he has A grader written all over him.

Clearly you don't give a toss. But the number of mature aged recruits is growing each year as clubs realise the quick potential of ready made players.

Consider some of the names over recent years - James Podsiadly, Michael Barlow, Ben Brown, Matt Priddis, Harry Taylor, Brody Mihocek, Mark Blicavs, Tom Stewart, Michael Hibberd, Tim Kelly, Bayley Fritsch, and that's probably only scratching the surface.

It's in the Paul Ahern thread on our board if you want to have a look, don't feel comfortable quoting the poster on the main board as it's possible someone could know him IRL considering he named a source.

Cripps put up a very similar game in his 7th game against the saints after a broken leg the year before.

Perhaps not the same as two knee recos - but the comparison probably shows it takes a special sort of player to be pulling that off. Will be a gun if his body holds up.

Yep, his breakout game.

33d, 11 tackles, 8 clearances and a goal.

Took him another 8 games to crack 30 disposals, then smashed it at the end of that season.

I think Ahern will back it up again before the end of the season, especially with games against the Lions, Dogs and Saints in that block.

Every chance he ends up averaging 25+ disposals for the year from 12 or so games, which might just see him in the AFLPA 22under22

AFLPA best first year player.

To be fair Kennedy and Mitchell were the oldest debutants of that lot playing their first games at 19. Ahern was only two months off 22 when he debuted, so a bit more physically mature. Good to see him out there playing good footy after being an early draft pick and not seeing any AFL action for a couple of years.

Played a ripping game, though. I for one am rapt that he chose to do it against the team I support and while sitting on the bench of my fantasy football team.
